Rushden Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Located in the county of Northamptonshire, and around 35 miles southeast of Leicester, is the town of Rushden.

The name 'Rushden' literally means 'rushy valley'. It appears in the Domesday Book of 1086 as 'Risdene'.

During the 14th century, Rushden Hall was built at the southern end of the town centre. Over the centuries it has been home to various wealthy families. In 1930 it was opened to the public, and today it serves as the headquarters of Rushden Town Council. The building is Grade II listed and features at the start of the walk in Hall Park.

At the centre of town at its most elevated point is the striking St Mary's Church, whose origins go back to the 13th century. The tower was enlarged in the 14th century, and the spire was built, which is 52 metres/172 feet high, and can be seen from several miles away.

Industry in Rushden initially consisted primarily of agriculture. Following the Industrial Revolution, lace-making and brick-making were introduced. During the late 19th century, shoe-making began in Rushden. By the early 20th century it had become a major industry, having secured large government contracts to supply army boots. At its peak, around the mid-20th century, there were over 100 boot and shoe factories in Rushden. The industry began to decline with the emergence of foreign imports - first from Italy, then from the eastern countries. Some of the redundant factories have since been converted into flats. One notable company still in operation is Sanders & Sanders, who have been crafting footwear in Rushden since 1873.

In 1894 a railway station opened in Rushden. It was situated on a branch line between Wellingborough and Higham Ferrers. It closed to passengers in 1959, and the station closed completely ten years later. In 1996 the station was bought by the Rushden Historical Transport Society. Since then it has been transformed into a museum and heritage railway with over half a mile of track.

Rushden is represented in sport by A.F.C. Rushden & Diamonds. This is a phoenix club that formed in 2011 following the dissolution of their previous incarnation: Rushden & Diamonds F.C. who were in existence between 1992 and 2011. They formed as a merger between Rushden Town and Irthlingborough Diamonds from the neighbouring town. The original club, Rushden Town, was founded in 1889.

Places to see in ( Northampton - UK )

Northampton is the county town of Northamptonshire in the East Midlands of England. It lies on the River Nene, about 67 miles north-west of London and 50 miles south-east of Birmingham.

Northampton rose to national significance with the establishment of Northampton Castle, which was an occasional royal residence and regularly hosted the Parliament of England. Medieval Northampton had many churches, monasteries and the University of Northampton, which were all enclosed by the town walls. It was granted its first town charter by King Richard I in 1189 and its first mayor was appointed by King John in 1215. The town is also the site of two medieval battles; the Battle of Northampton (1264) and the second in 1460.

Northampton's royal connection languished in the modern period; the town supported Parliament (the Roundheads) in the English Civil War, which culminated in King Charles II ordering the destruction of the town walls and most of the castle. The town also suffered the Great Fire of Northampton (1675) which destroyed most of the town. It was soon rebuilt and grew rapidly with the industrial development of the 18th century. Northampton continued to grow following the creation of the Grand Union Canal and the arrival of the railways in the 19th century, becoming an industrial centre for footwear and leather manufacture.

After the World Wars, Northampton's growth was limited until it was designated as a New Town in 1968, accelerating development in the town. Northampton unsuccessfully applied for unitary status in 1996 and city status in 2000; the town continues to expand with many areas undergoing urban renewal.

Just a small clip of my local area, my home town of irthlingborough. Recent drone law changes have given me the freedom to fly near residential areas (being courteous of privacy) to get an unseen view of places not seen before. I love our town church St Peters, so it’s a real pleasure to explore our 13th century church from different views.

Cruising Down Memory Lane | BOAT LIFE | The Good, The Bad and The Beautiful [Ep 124]

This week I have a crew member for the day and go and visit the Battle of Bosworth or Bosworth Field as it's also known. This was the last significant battle of the Wars of the Roses, the civil war between the houses of Lancaster and York and where King Richard 3rd lost his life. We also cruise to Market Bosworth to visit the Battle Line Railway that is operated by the Shackerstone Railway Society to board an old train. The Ashby Canal is full of history and I've really enjoyed my time here and I'm so excited to continue my adventure over the next few weeks to see what else this wonderful canal has to offer.
------------
Thank you so much for watching. If you are new here, I'm Heidi and I live aboard my Narrowboat The Rum Wench and travel the UK's Canals in search of Adventure. After selling my house to experience an alternative lifestyle I bought a canal boat and a camper van which as a solo female who loves to travel, gives me the best of both worlds. I have recently got myself a new addition to the crew, a fabulous companion - my little rescue dog Bonny who is an absolute joy. I also work full time off grid from my tiny home and trade at canal festivals as The Pirate Boat.

S-2 UK Mainland Ep. 05 - More road closures

This is Day 6 of my UK mainland trip. Today we set off from Perth to Inverness briefly stopping at some castles along the way. Another good mix of roads and scenery including a road closure that added an additional 30 miles or so, but with the scenery I was diverted through, no bad thing.

Hoping you can Like the video, as this does help the channel.
