Off the coast of Northwest Africa, Gran Canaria is an amazing island of gorgeous scenery, endless stretches of sandy beaches, otherworldly dunes and quaint towns. A year-round destination like no other, Gran Canaria is a fantastic place to escape the cold as temperatures on the island rarely fall below 25°C throughout the year.

Driving is the best way to explore Gran Canaria. In this video, we’ve put together a 10-day Gran Canaria itinerary that has it all: from ancient ruins and picturesque villages to dramatic viewpoints and local businesses worth visiting.

Let this epic Gran Canaria road trip begin!

USEFUL TIPS ABOUT YOUR GRAN CANARIA ROAD TRIP

- Parking in Gran Canaria is relatively easy. In Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and other large towns, always look for the right parking line colour. White lines mean you can park for free. Blue lines mean you can park for a fee that you can pay at the nearest ticket machine. Stay away from yellow and green parking lines. Alternatively, you can park in a large parking lot for a fee. Sometimes, your car rental company may offer free parking near your hotel.

- More often than not, there are more than one ways to get from point A to B. In this video, we usually suggest taking the most scenic route rather than the fastest or easiest one. Also, driving along the same roads and passing through the same spots is inevitable sometimes, but we did our best to add as much variety as possible to this 10-day Gran Canaria itinerary. Last but not least, some places may seem very close to one another on the map but there isn't always a quick road to connect them.

- If you're wondering about the best car type to rent in Gran Canaria, just go with the one you feel comfortable driving. We went for a FIAT 500 and it was perfect!

Ingenio, Gran Canaria (4K)

Ingenio Is a town and municipality on the east of Gran Canaria, Spain. The town of ingenio is about 5km inland from the coast. It is an old town with plenty of architecture to look at. Ingenio has a real ‘local’ feel as there is no mass tourism to be found there.

Maunabo Puerto Rico, A Photographer’s Playground

Many people visiting Puerto Rico never go beyond Old San Juan. That’s a sad fact. Others come for the beaches, of which Puerto Rico has some of the best in the world. Sadly, like so many other places around the world, the effects of erosion caused by rising sea levels are slowly affecting Puerto Rican beaches.

This week we visited the small town of Maunabo, on the southeastern end of Puerto Rico. It’s the kind of place that banks on its natural beauty, not on architectural marvels or amusement areas. Maunabo is simply beautiful.

It also has the only black sand beach on the larger Island. The other one is on the souther coast of the smaller island of Vieques. I haven’t visited the one in Vieques lately but erosion is starting to rear its ugly head at Playa Los Bohíos in Maunabo.

Then there’s Punta Tuna, a beautiful lighthouse that could easily be a worldwide attraction. Close by is Playa Larga, a very long beach (hence the name) that extends along the Punta Tuna Nature Reserve.

If you’re a landscape photographer like me you’ll love Maunabo, because there’s eye candy all around you. Watch this video to the end and you’ll understand what I mean.

Agüimes - Gran Canaria - Canary Islands - Spain 8K

The municipality of Agüimes, whose principal demographic centre is situated only 2 kilometres from Ingenio and 29 kilometres from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, is divided into three perfectly defined areas: the grazing or mountain area beginning at an altitude of 300 metres above sea-level, the agricultural area situated at 275 metres above sea-level (where the Historic Quarter of Agüimes is situated) and the coastal area which heads for the fishing village of Arinaga.

Group of friends walking around Agüimes streets
Street in the historic old part of Agüimes
In Agüimes one must highlight its historic quarter with the Parish Temple of San Sebastián, a stone building with a certain cathedral-looking style and a façade which represents the one of the best examples of neo-classical Canarian architecture on the island. The temple was declared a Monument of National Historical Interest in 1981.

In the same centre of the Villa is is to be found the Casa de Los Camellos Hotel, a more than 300 year old building that belonged to an aristocratic family, and close by, in the Plaza de San Antón, is situated the Interpretation Centre of Agüimes, which allows the visitor to interpret the architectural and artistic characteristics of the Historic Quarter. Public opening hours: Winter, Mondays to Fridays from 08:00 to 15:00 hours and also on Mondays from 16:00 to 18:00 hours; Summer, Mondays to Fridays from 08:00 to 14:00 hours.

Iglesia de Agüimes church
Plaza de la Música square
During four centuries the municipality of Agüimes was the domain of the Episcopal Chamber. Testimony to those times is the Episcopal Palace, which now houses the Agüimes History Museum, next to the Parque de Los Moros. At present the museum has eight exhibition rooms. In this building, both the access door as well as the stonework that frames it are worth a mention. From the building one must highlight all of its masonry (which comes from the only quarry in this part of the island), the gabled roof, as well as the beautiful treated woodwork. Public opening hours Tuesdays to Sundays from 09:00 to 14:00 and from 15:00 to 18:00 hours.

There exist two places of interest within the natural surroundings of the municipality: Temisas and Guayadeque.

Temisas, 9.6 kilometres from the centre of Agüimes with its beautiful landscape surroundings  was declared Representative Canarian Hamlet by the Canarian Government. In Temisas we can contemplate an extraordinary mountain view, the Roque Aguayro (the Aguayro Rock Monolith) and the most important olive tree plantation of the Canarian archipelago, where the XVIII century Hermitage of San Miguel is situated.

Temisas landscape
View of the Roque Aguayro
Guayadeque is to be found at a distance of 3 kilometres from the centre of Agüimes. Guayadeque is a deep gully that divides the island and which has been classified as a Natural Monument and Property of Cultural Interest. Here we find the interesting troglodyte village of Cueva Bermeja (Bermeja Cave), the Chapel of San Bartolomé Apóstol, as well as welcoming restaurants built into the mountain rocks. Guayadeque also possesses an Interpretation Centre situated in a building dug into the sides of the gully. Public opening hours Tuesdays to Saturdays from 09:00 to 17:00 hours; Sundays from 10:00 to 18:00 hours.

Among the beaches of this coastal municipality, one must highlight Vargas Beach which has been recognised as one of the best beaches in the world for the practise of radical windsurfing. It is for this reason that a world championship event is held here annually, the Vargas PWA Wave Classic Grand Prix, which attracts the most prestigious windsurfers in the world.

However, if the visitor wants to appreciate the marine sea-beds of Gran Canaria, Agüimes offers one of the most spectacular beaches for the practise of underwater diving: El Cabrón Beach, one of the marine areas with the greatest biological and ecological diversity of the Canarian Archipelago.

The municipality of Agüimes also has two more beaches, Arinaga Beach and Balos Beach, which although exposed to the trade winds, are very popular, especially in the summer.

Puerto Rico, Toa Baja

The Cuban government has implemented various policies to mitigate the impact of economic challenges on its citizens. For example, the country operates a dual currency system. The CUC is primarily used in the tourist sector, while the CUP is used by locals for basic goods and services. However, this system has led to inequality in the distribution of wealth, with those working in the tourist sector receiving higher wages than those in other sectors.

What Is CUBA Like Today? Life in Cuba today is characterized by a sense of community and togetherness. Despite the economic challenges, Cubans are known for their resilience and resourcefulness. The country has a rich culture and is home to world-renowned artists, musicians, and writers.

A day hunting for charcos in Cañon San Cristóbal in the mountains of Barranquitas, Puerto Rico does not go as planned. While recording a beautiful shot of one of the many waterfalls, my beloved DJI Mavic 2 drone decides to take her final nap hanging from a tree over a cliff. Using the footage recorded of her last seconds and her approximate location superimposed over a map of the jungle canopy, we spend 2 hours searching for the cold-blooded tree that cut her life short.
