Howland Island, Montezuma Walk in the Park episode 231

North of Cayuga Lake, Howland Island is a major component of the Montezuma Wetlands Complex, where a partnership among government agencies, non-profit organizations, and local landowners works to restore and manage the extensive wetlands that settlers encountered more than two centuries ago. In January, the Montezuma Audubon Center filled its auditorium with people who had come to learn about the history of this unusual island bounded by the Erie Canal and Seneca River. In this episode of Walk in the Park (231), Alyssa Johnson, environmental educator for the Montezuma Audubon Center, reveals the past 90 years of history of Howland Island in public ownership, from its days as a Civilian Conservation Corps camp, to a WW2 prisoner of war camp, and then a wildlife management area. And she takes us through the changing practices and policies toward wildlife on the island during subsequent decades. Finally she shows us some ways we can get access to this land where wildlife is top priority.

Walk in the Park is a local public access TV series produced at PEGASYS Studio in Ithaca, NY by Owl Gorge Productions, Owlgorge.com. You can see most past episodes at the website walkinthepark.tv.

Walking Tour of New Bedford Howland Mill & Village, Guide to the History of Textiles

Fantastic Bruce Barnes walking tour of historic New Bedford Howland Mill and the Howland Mill Village.

Most people think of New Bedford as the Whaling City, which it was. But, it was also a leading cotton textile capital during the Industrial Revolution. At its peak around 1920, New Bedford had numerous mills with some 150 mill buildings employing over 35,000!

(To subscribe to this channel:

One of the most interesting experiments of that era was the Howland Mill, which started operation in 1888. Founded by William D. Howland, a descendant of one of the most important and influential New Bedford whaling families, the Mill was extremely innovative and progressive. Most mills provided employees with only tenement-style housing, but Howland purchased land in an undeveloped area of New Bedford and created a cohesive community where everyone, not only mill managers, could be housed in set back stand-alone houses with yards and services where everyone could live in comfort and dignity; the first urban industrial utopia.

Join Bruce as he guides us through the history of textile manufacturing in New Bedford and leads us through the Howland Mill and Village, which still has many of the original houses.

The tour was given in August 2019 as part of the series for the New Bedford Preservation Society.

Denali Tundra Wilderness Tour After the Landslide

If you are visiting Alaska in 2022 or 2023, you will be impacted by the landslide that wiped out the road around mile marker 45. If you book a land and sea cruisetour to Alaska with Holland America Line, check with your travel advisor if the tundra wilderness tour is included. Our 2023 group trip includes this tundra wilderness tour. We get picked up from our hotel (likely the McKinley Chalet Resort), in our upgraded school bus with a trained guide.

You will have a chance to see moose, bear, caribou, dall sheep, wolves, golden eagles, and arctic squirrels. Only 10% of visitors get to see the peak of Denali but you still get to experience the vast wilderness of Denali National Park on this tour.

If you are going independently, you can buy your own narrated bus tickets here: We recommend buying these as soon as you know your dates. The tour is about 5.5 hours total.

Disclaimer: This bus tour was kindly sponsored by Holland America Line. As always, all opinions are strictly my own.

ALASKA GROUP TRIP, JULY 2023

Join our group trip starting in Fairbanks, Alaska. We will explore the Golden Heart of Alaska and then head south to Denali National Park, the crown jewel of Alaska. Ride the scenic train south to join our cruise ship for more adventure, glacier viewing, and all the seafood you can eat!

ITINERARY:
Plan to fly to Fairbanks, Alaska on July 18 to account for potential flight or luggage delays. This will give you the day of the 19th to start adjusting to the time difference (4 hours behind Eastern time). We can plan some optional excursions on the 19th, such as visits to the Museum of the North, Chena Hot Springs, North Pole Village, Pioneer Park, Gold Dredge, or even an Arctic Circle flightseeing tour.

July 20th we will take an old stern paddlewheel boat along the Chena River before heading about 3 hours south to Denali. We will stay in a lodge just a few minutes away from Denali National Park entrance.

On July 21, we will take a 5.5-hour guided bus tour as far as possible into the park (Mile 43 due to a landslide). You will have some free time after the tour to hike, relax at the lodge by the fire pit, do some shopping, or take some additional excursions.

Next up on July 22 we will ride the scenic train south to Anchorage. Everyone gets an assigned seat on the large dome rail car to watch the mountains, rivers, and even small towns go by. We will spend the night in Anchorage so you can explore the downtown area by trolley or on foot.

On July 23 we will take a ride to the port of Whittier to join our cruise ship that will be our home base for the next 7 days. We will have two scenic days at sea to relax and view Hubbard Glacier and see Glacier Bay National Park.

Our port stops will be full days at Skagway, Juneau, and Ketchikan where there are lots of opportunities to wander around or take part in excursions to get closer to glaciers, go fishing, rafting, and lots more.

We will leave the ship on July 30th in Vancouver, Canada.

Prices start at about $3,100 per person including taxes and fees for an inside cabin. For a balcony, prices start at $4,200 per person including taxes and fees. Prices are based on double occupancy.
