Places to see in ( Newton Aycliffe - UK )

Places to see in ( Newton Aycliffe - UK )

Newton Aycliffe is a town in County Durham, England. Founded in 1947 under the New Towns Act of 1946, the town sits about five miles to the north of Darlington and ten miles to the south of the city of Durham. It is the oldest new town in the north of England, and together with the bordering Aycliffe Village (to the south) and the north part of School Aycliffe (to the west), forms the civil parish of Great Aycliffe.

At the 2001 census, Great Aycliffe had a population of 26,385, although in 2007 Great Aycliffe Town Council reported this had risen to 29,000. It is the largest town within the Sedgefield constituency. Within a radius of 10 miles (16 km) are several towns and villages including Darlington, Bishop Auckland, Shildon and Heighington. To the south of the town is the village of Aycliffe. Newton comes from 'New Town'. Aycliffe Village is near to the A1(M) junction with the A167 (former A1).

On the edge of the town is the Bishop Auckland to Darlington railway branch line which is part of the 1825 Stockton and Darlington Railway. George Stephenson's steam locomotive Locomotion No 1 was placed on the rails close to Newton Aycliffe near to where Heighington station is. The Great North Road passed (A1) through the town until 1969.

The original Woodham was a medieval village, although apart from a few low mound earthworks (on private land) there is no trace of this original village. It was located on the northern side of the Woodham Burn stream and to the East of the A167 that cuts through the site in a north-south direction.

There are no streets in Newton Aycliffe (no places of residence with the suffix 'street'.). The main road which runs through the centre of the town is 'Central Avenue'. There are many Roads, Closes, Crescents and even a Parade. In the older parts of the town the streets are named after Bishops of Durham and Saints: Van Mildert (road); St. Aidan's (walk); Biscop (Crescent). Some are named after prominent local families such as Shafto (way), Eden (road), and Bowes (Road) for example. Some are even named after the movers and shakers of the New Town Movement such as Lord Lewis Silkin (Silkin Way) and Lord Beveridge (Beveridge Way).

The A167 (old A1) is the main road to the town, it runs to Durham and Newcastle upon Tyne (30 miles) in the north and Darlington (8 miles) and Northallerton in the south. The A1(M) is near to the town and runs to Edinburgh in the north and London to the south, it provides as an alternative route to Durham and Newcastle in the north. The A689 is also near the town and it runs to Bishop Auckland in the west and Hartlepool and Teesside in the east.

The Newton Aycliffe railway station, which is on the Tees Valley Line, has train services provided by Northern to Bishop Auckland and Saltburn. There are connections to East Coast services to Edinburgh and London at Darlington, connections to Grand Central services to Northallerton, York and London at Eaglescliffe, and connections to Northern Rail services to Hartlepool, Sunderland and Newcastle at Thornaby.

GREAT BRITAIN Broadway & Snowshill & Hailes abbey (10 Oct 2022)

In September and October 2022 we visited England and Wales. Join us on our trips day by day.
Broadway is a large village and civil parish in the Cotswolds, England, with a population of 2,540 at the 2011 census. It is in the far southeast of Worcestershire, close to the Gloucestershire border, midway between Evesham and Moreton-in-Marsh. It is sometimes referred to as the Jewel of the Cotswolds.
Broadway village lies beneath Fish Hill on the western Cotswold escarpment. The broad way is the wide grass-fringed main street, centred on the Green, which is lined with red chestnut trees and honey-coloured Cotswold limestone buildings, many dating from the 16th century. It is known for its association with the Arts and Crafts movement, and is in an area of outstanding scenery and conservation. The wide High Street is lined with a wide variety of shops and cafes, many housed in listed buildings.
Snowshill (is a small Cotswolds village and civil parish in Gloucestershire, England, located near Broadway, Worcestershire. The population taken at the 2011 census was 164.
Hailes Abbey is a former Cistercian abbey, in the small village of Hailes, two miles northeast of Winchcombe, Gloucestershire, England. It was founded in 1246 as a daughter establishment of Beaulieu Abbey. The abbey was dissolved by Henry VIII in 1539. Little remains of the abbey. It is a Grade I listed building[1] and a scheduled monument.
The site is owned by the National Trust but managed by English Heritage. There is a museum on the site holding many artefacts from the Abbey.

UK: Morpeth, Arriva Trains Northern Class 142 'Pacer' entering sidings after arrival from Newcastle

UK: At Morpeth, a Class 142 'Pacer' DMU (number 142018) is seen entering the sidings after arrival on the 1314 from Newcastle. Recorded 29th March 2003.

Morpeth is a historic market town in Northumberland, north-east England, lying on the River Wansbeck. Nearby villages include Mitford and Pegswood. In the 2011 census, the population of Morpeth was given as 14,017, up from 13,833 in the 2001 census.

Morpeth, archaically spelt Morepath, is recorded in the Assize Rolls of Northumberland of 1256 as Morpath and Morthpath. The meaning is uncertain; moor path has been suggested in reference to its historical position on the main road from England to Scotland, whilst the marshes around the modern-day Carlisle Park have been suggested to be the moor in question. There is, however, a local tradition which holds that the name derives from the Old English pre-7th-century compound morð-pæð or Morthpaeth (murder path) in remembrance of some forgotten slaying on the road.[ This meaning has been suggested to be fanciful by some sources.

The British Rail Class 142 is a class of Pacer diesel multiple-unit passenger trains used in the United Kingdom. 96 units were built by British Rail Engineering Limited's Derby Litchurch Lane Works between 1985 and 1987. They were a development of the earlier Class 141 which were introduced in 1984.

They were initially built for use on rural branch lines. As at May 2018, Arriva Trains Wales operate fifteen units and Northern 79 units. All will be withdrawn by December 2019.

The unit's body is based on that of the original Leyland National bus, and many fixtures and fittings of the bus can be found on the units. Each unit has a seating capacity of any number between 102and 121 passengers per two-car set. In theory there should be 106 or 121 seats per unit. However, many units have had seats removed to provide additional space for wheelchair access.[citation needed] The same engines and mechanical transmissions were used as on Class 141, as also the same double-folding external doors. Each car has a fuel capacity of 125 gallons.

All 94 Class 142s will be withdrawn by December 2019, as they do not comply with the Persons of Reduced Mobility Technical Specification for Interoperability (PRM-TSI).

Bidders for the Northern franchise that commenced in April 2016 were required to order new DMUs and take on Sprinters and Turbostars released by other franchises as replacement. The Long Term Passenger Rolling Stock Strategy for the Rail Industry indicates up to 500 non-electric carriages will need to be built in the short term. Northern withdrawals are scheduled to commence in November 2018 with the last to be removed from traffic in October 2019.

New Wales & Borders franchise holder KeolisAmey Wales will replace all of its Class 142s by December 2019.
