Places to see in ( Denton - UK )

Places to see in ( Denton - UK )

Denton is a town in the Metropolitan Borough of Tameside, Greater Manchester, England, five miles east of Manchester city centre. Historically part of Lancashire, it had a population of 36,591 at the 2011 Census. Denton probably derives its name from Dane-town, an etymology supported by other place names in the area such as Danehead-bank and Daneditch-bourne. The word 'Dane' is itself derived from Anglo-Saxon denu, dene, daenland, meaning a valley. So literally Denton means valley town.

There is one main war memorial, or cenotaph, in Denton, located in Victoria Park. This memorial commemorates people from Denton and Haughton who served in two world wars. The names on the war memorial were collected from their relatives who wrote to the council with details of their loved ones who served in either war. The war memorial was unveiled on 23 July 1921. Figures from the Denton section of the Tameside council website, state that 3,500 Denton men served in the Great War (1914–1918), of that number, 369 people were killed.

The oldest church in Denton is St. Lawrence's. It is almost 500 years old, originally built in 1531. It is a listed Grade II* building. The church is also known locally as Th'owd Peg (the old peg) due to the fact, as a timber-framed building, it was constructed with wooden pegs rather than nails. It is more commonly known as the black and white church, because of its appearance. A local myth is also said to have a pirate buried within its grounds because of a grave stone marked with a skull and crossbones at its front door. In a more thorough investigation and article printed by Denton Local History Society (1995), it was found that the gravestone was actually a masonic gravestone belonging to a deceased Soldier named Samuel Bromley from the Royal Artillery. The magnificent Victorian St Anne's Church, Haughton, is a Grade I listed building, and is built in the Gothic Revival style.

One of Denton's claims to fame is that, along with Reddish South, it has the UK's least frequent train service, every Friday, in one direction, from Stockport to Stalybridge. There are bus links to Manchester city centre, Hyde, Ashton-under-Lyne and Stockport operated by Stagecoach. The M67 Denton Relief Road motorway was constructed, running east to west through Denton, between 1978 and 1981. Originally this was planned to be part of a motorway running from central Manchester to Sheffield. At its western end the M67 connects with the M60 Manchester Ring Road.

Haughton Green Bothy, Kielder

So after staying in Green Bothy, also in Kielder Forest, we wanted to try out Haughton Green Bothy also. Personally I prefered Green Bothy, however, both are things about them that would definitely convince you to go back and stay again.

Not the most amount of footage captured this trip, must have been camera shy, but it certainly was a nice trip and a good catch up with the gang

SCROOBY: Bassetlaw Parish #12 of 66

If you thought Austerfield was the only place that the Pilgrim Fathers story has connections to in this part of the world, well think again. There's quote a few of them around the South Yorkshire/Bassetlaw border area and today's parish is perhaps the one with the most history connected to the Mayflower's journey some 400 years ago.

That's because William Brewster, one of the separatists, lived here in the Manor House, which now is owned by the Dunstans, and is currently being restored to it's former glory. The Pilgrim tale is etched all over this village, from the information boards, to the names of the properties, to the apple tree that's been planted in the centre. You cannot escape it.

I do try though in this video to show that the village isn't all about the Pilgrim Fathers;. Take for example the watermill (Monks Mill), with it's lovely pond and attractive exterior, or the park and the village hall both of which have much bigger roles in the community than just informing passers by of the history.

In fact, if you go a little further afield within the parish boundaries you encounter some much more gruesome history with the story of John Spencer, and a nice woodland burial ground designed to make remembering our loved ones that little more manageable for the living.

All in all you're not going to escape the history like the separatists did, but there's a lot more to see in the parish of SCROOBY.

WALESBY: Newark and Sherwood Parish #1 of 84

WELCOME TO NEWARK AND SHERWOOD!

16 miles North of Newark is a village is famous for its forest, part of which forms a 250-acre scout camp site. It’s etymology is interesting. It can be attributed to the personal name “Valr”, which means “hawk”. Over time, it has taken many different forms in terms of spelling too, often spelt with an I at the end instead of a Y, and sometimes having been spelt Valesby and Whalesby with an H, like the sea creature!

It should not be confused with a parish of the same name in Lincolnshire, although it often is. Its Lincolnshire counterpart is situated to the North East of Market Rasen and is a parish we’ll cover in West Lindsey soon. The former noble proprietor here was the Duke of Newcastle who was then the Earl of Clare.

He sold both land and the manor house in the mid 1700s, and these are now known better as Lound Hall and Lound Hall Estate, within and to the east of boundaries of nearby Bothamsall. Willoughby, a hamlet listed here in White’s 1853 directory of Nottinghamshire, seems to have now been absorbed into the main village.

The village used to hold a sheep-clipping and annual feast on the Wednesday nearest to the 25th of June. As far as a war memorial goes, there is a white stone tablet with black lettering inside St. Edmund's Church, but as far as I could tell the village doesn’t have a free standing memorial anywhere.

Remember the Haughton episode of Bassetlaw? If I continued down from the small car park and taken the field footpath I would have seen St James Chapel which is looked after by local people here. Those local people come from WALESBY.

LOUND: Bassetlaw Parish #14 of 66

Along the River Idle there are a number of interesting villages, and we will of course see them all on this channel in due course. I don't think there going to be many like this one however. There's a huge nature reserve in this parish created by the Idle Valley and the sand and gravel pits that used to be located in the village's East.

The nature reserve is not the be all and end all of this one though. There's lots of things to see in a village that's generally quite small and out of the way. The main road to Retford lies to the West, so travelling to and from this one requires a little bit of exploration through the countryside to an extent.

What you'll find is a village that's so quiet, the only noises you'll hear generally will be the occasional tractor or the local bus service as it sweeps through on it's way to Retford or to Misson, depending on which way it's heading. The village seems to be quite a close community though, and since 1970 that community has had it's very own journal, to let residents know of what goes on here.

There's no church or chapel - both have been converted into residential properties, but the bells from the church have been moved to the neighbouring village of Sutton, so they still ring. The Hall here is used as a residential care home, situated opposite a lovely little village green, which epitomises the tranquillity of the village it serves.

All in all, TVI had a nice stroll around the parish of LOUND.
