Harlan, Kentucky | What Happened To This Place?
With a soaring poverty level of over 41%, Harlan Kentucky is one of the poorest cities in America. Hidden away in the Eastern Hills of Kentucky, this place has suffered immensely from the decline in coal mining. At a population height of 5,122 people in the 1940's to just 1,641 in 2023 this city continues to decline each year with no recovery in sight. Although Harlan has a low cost of living, and relatively safe community, finding a good job is extremely difficult. Many businesses have closed over the years, amenities are few, and people simply have to move away to find better opportunities. Let's take a look at some of the most impacted areas.

I visited this site on my 2021 Harlan, Kentucky Fall Foliage Trip. It is a beautiful lake. I didn't spend over forty minutes walking the main area around this park due to the cold weather. It is a scenic wonder that reflects man's ability to create things as GOD did. Of course, apart from GOD, man cannot create anything. To GOD be the glory!!

Knobby Rock, the Maze, and Sand Cave at Blanton Forest, Kentucky
Blanton Forest State Nature Preserve is located on the south face of Pine Mountain, just outside of the town of Harlan, Kentucky. The over 3500 acre property protects the largest stand of old growth forest in Kentucky, and is one of only 13 large tracts of old growth forest remaining in the eastern United States. The only access to Blanton Forest is on foot. The property contains about 5 miles of hiking trails that lead to points of interest, including Knobby Rock, the Maze, and Sand Cave. Knobby Rock offers outstanding views of the surrounding area. The Maze is a massive boulder field with plenty of fun rock scrambling. The loop trails that head up the mountain to these rock features are strenuous. The easier Watts Creek Trail offers scenic views of the valley floor.
