West Midlands travel, Top 30 Best Places to Visit in West Midlands United Kingdom

The West Midlands is one of nine authority areas of England at the main level of NUTS for factual purposes. It covers the western portion of the zone generally known as the Midlands. It contains the second most crowded British city, Birmingham, and the bigger West Midlands conurbation, which incorporates the city of Wolverhampton and huge towns of Dudley, Solihull, Walsall and West Bromwich. The city of Coventry is additionally situated inside the West Midlands region, yet is isolated from the conurbation toward the west by a few miles of green belt.

Passport And Visas Requirements To Enter The UK

Please note: Following the recent referendum vote for the UK to leave the European Union (EU), there are currently no changes in the way people travel to Britain. The following guidelines still apply:

If you're planning an adventure to the UK, depending on your nationality and your reason for visiting, you may need to organise a visa.

If you're an American, Canadian or Australian tourist, you'll be able to travel visa-free throughout the UK, providing you have a valid passport and your reason for visiting meets the immigration rules (link is external).

Citizens from some South American and Caribbean countries as well as Japan are also able to travel visa-free around the UK.

European Union citizens, non-EU member states of the EEA (Norway, Liechtenstein and Iceland), Switzerland, and members of the Overseas Countries and Territories (OCT) do not need a visa to enter the UK.

If you have any further visa questions visit the official UK government website.

About Birmingham and its tourist attractions and sightseeing:

Birmingham is the second largest city of the United Kingdom. Here you will see many interesting places and many interesting people. Even today the population of Birmingham is very diverse. The reason for that is in ancestors of modern Birmingham residents.

This city is quite old and it is mentioned for the first time yet in the “Book of the Doomsday” issued in 1086. The city becomes significantly popular in the 13th century because of its multiple fair-trades. Moreover, at that time one could buy high quality weapons there and there was constant high demand on that product.

In this city you can find all architectural styles that look very naturally together, making the city unforgettable and uniquely beautiful. The center Birmingham is the location of the International Convention Center that is widely known and popular for its beauty and refined design. Moreover, here you can see many important political meetings. From time to time famous politicians from different countries of the world come to Birmingham to participate in international negotiations.

One more famous sight is the local town hall. It was built in 1830 and still keeps attracting people from all over the world by its beauty and classical Victorian style. Of course, there are many cultural and historical places of interest in Birmingham.

The most interesting street for a walk, by definition, is the Gas Street Basin. Here are wonderful channels, and just an amazing combination of antiquity and modernity. There is also another romantic place here, namely, the Lover’s Bridge. It is precisely here, as the name implies, that couples in love gather. The embankment is very romantic and it is pleasurable to have a walk here, especially in the evening. Another recommended place to visit is the Aston Hall. The magnificent garden on the territory of the house-museum is notable.

Birmingham is a popular tourist destination with developed tourism infrastructure and tourism industry in general. The tourism sector is of great importance to Birmingham.

The best views in the Midlands? The Clent Hills - Walking in England - June 2020

The best views in the Midlands? The Clent Hills - Walking in England - June 2020

Join us as we take an evening walk up the Clent Hills in Worcestershire. These hills in Clent lie 10 miles south-west of Birmingham city centre and provide stunning views of the West Midlands, Worcestshire and even as far as Wales on a clear day!

There are four ancient looking stones on the summit, but they were originally created in the 1770s for Lord Lyttleton as a folly to be viewed from down in the valley by visitors.

Hagley Park and Gardens visit by Mahwish & the family

We were feeling bored so decided to visit Christchurch Botanic Garden in Hagley Park. The Christchurch Botanic Gardens is a public garden which is located in central Christchurch, next to Hagley Park.

The 21 hectares (52 acres) garden was formed in 1863 when an English oak was planted to commemorate the marriage of Prince Albert and Princess Alexandra of Denmark.

From Rolleston Ave entrance, next to the Canterbury Museum, is the Armstrong Lawn, which is named after John Armstrong who was one of the early curators of the Gardens. Located here is the Peacock Fountain, which was shipped from England and unveiled in 1911 after a bequest from local businessman John Peacock. The fountain was moved to storage in 1949 and was restored and moved to its current location in 1996.

Nearby is the Curator’s Cottage, this Tudor-style house was built in 1920. It is now a Spanish style restaurant and cafe, serving lunch, dinner and tapas 7 days a week.

The iconic Avon River runs through the Botanic Gardens. Visitors can take a guided Edwardian style punting tour on the Avon River through the gardens. The 30-minute tours depart from historic Antigua Boatsheds.

The Central Rose Garden was built in 1909. The rectangular garden is based on the rose garden owned by the Duchess of Sutherland in Herefordshire, England.
The highlight is the Garden’s six indoor conservatories, which are open daily from 10:15 am to 4 pm.

Cuningham House, which houses the tropical plant collection opened in 1923 and is named after Charles Cunningham, who bequest funds to the Gardens.

Townsend House has a cool greenhouse flowering plants collection. The original Townsend House opened in 1914, following funds from the estate of Annie Townsend. The current Townsend House opened in 1955.

Garrick House, which houses over 500 species of cacti is named after Henry Garrick who donated a collection of cacti to the Gardens. Next door to Garrick House is Gilpin House, which is named after Huia Gilpin, a former director of the Council’s Parks and Recreation department. Gilpin House has the orchid collection. Both Garrick and Gilpin House opened in 1960.

The Gardens’ alpine plant collection is housed in Foweraker House. It opened in 1967 and is named after Jean Foweraker, who donated many plants to the Gardens.

The Fern House opened in 1955 houses a large collection of native New Zealand ferns.

A more recent feature of the Gardens is the World Peace Bell, which was installed in the Gardens in 2006. There are less than 25 of these throughout the world. The bell is built from coins and medals from over 100 countries and symbolises a nation’s devotion to world peace.

The gardens are open daily from 7 am. The gates close at 9 pm November to February, 8:30 pm March, 6:30 pm April to September, and 8:30 pm October. The cafe and visitor centre is open from 8:30 am to 5 pm.
Entrances can be made on Rolleston Avenue, Riccarton Avenue and Armagh Street. There are public car parks at Riccarton Avenue and Armagh Streets with free parking for up to 180 minutes.
