Madrid's Top 10 Places Every Traveler Should Visit

Madrid's Top 10 Places Every Traveler Should Visit

10. El Escorial
San Lorenzo de El Escorial is a town about 45 km from Madrid. Nestled in the foothills of the Sierra de Guadarrama, the city's main attraction is the world famous Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial, a World Heritage Site that was the political centre of the Spanish empire under King Philip II.

9. Museo de América
An excellent museum that many tourists miss. Houses thousands of artifacts from the Americas. The exhibit displays objects from many native cultures from before European conquest to colonial times and beyond. Don't miss the Tesoro de los Químbayas, a collection of gold objects that was given as a gift by the Colombian government.

8. Parque del Retiro
The main park of Madrid, the perfect place to take a rest during a sunny day, or take part in the drum circles around the statue of Alphonso XII on summer evenings. There is a large boating lake where one can hire a rowing boat - great fun for the children! Sunday afternoons in summer are a treat in the park, where young hippies play bongos and dance.

7. Centro de Arte Reina Sofía
Houses Madrid's best collection of modern art. It includes many of Pablo Picasso's most revered works including the renowned Guernica. The Reina Sofía also houses masterpieces by Miró, Kandinsky, Dalí, Bacon, and more.

6. Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza
The Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum is an art museum in Madrid, located near the Prado Museum at one of city's main boulevards. With over 1,600 paintings the Thyssen-Bornemisza collection was once the second largest private collection in the world after the British Royal Collection.

5. El Rastro
Madrid's largest flea market, featuring rows upon rows of private vendors selling a variety of homemade bads, and a plethora of live entertainment. It is very important to note that the Rastro is notorious for having an abundance of pickpockets, so watch your handbag closely and do not bring along valuables. edit

4. Monasterio de las Descalzas Reales
The Convent of Las Descalzas Reales is a royal monastery situated in Madrid, Spain, administered by the Patrimonio Nacional. The original architect of the church was Antonio Sillero. The facade was designed by Juan Bautista de Toledo in 1559; who also helped in the roofing of the church.

3. Plaza Mayor
Perhaps the best known plaza in Madrid, this impressive square is now one of the main stops on any tourist visit. Originally built outside the city walls, this enclosed square has played host to bullfights, markets, symphonies, tournaments and executions. Today it is ringed with tourist shops, cafes and restaurants.

2. Museo del Prado
One of the finest art collections in the world and the best collection of classical art in Madrid. It includes many different collections: the Spanish (El Greco, Velázquez, and Goya), the Flemish and Dutch (Rubens, van Dyck, and Brueghel), Italian (Botticelli, Tintoretto, Titian, Caravaggio, and Veronese) and German (Albrecht Dürer, Lucas Cranach, and Baldung Grien).

1. Palacio Real
The Palacio Real (Royal Palace) is an enormous palace, one of the biggest in Europe, with scorching plains of concrete around it. Though it is the official residence of the King of Spain, the royal family does not actually reside here and it is generally used only for state ceremonies. The Royal Palace is considered to be one of the most emblematic and beautiful buildings in Madrid, not only for its location on a bluff overlooking the river valley but also for its architecture and the artistic treasures to be found in its rooms.

Exploring SEGOVIA, SPAIN!???????? (What To See & Do)

Today we're exploring the beautiful medieval town of Segovia, Spain!!!????????
► Subscribe -
► Instagram -
► Facebook -

It's really going to be hard to find a city more beautiful than this! Segovia sits about an hour outside of Spain's capital city of Madrid & is PERFECT for a day trip. Follow along as we explore this gorgeous city!

Before arriving, we wanted to enter into the city in the coolest entrance possible. Puerta de San Andreas, or San Andreas Gate, is an entryway in the medieval city walls on the south side of the city. The gate is dedicated to Saint Andrew and dates back as far as 1120, however todays gate was renovated between the 15th and 16th centuries. Today it serves as an office for tourism and is the entry point in case you’re wanting to walk the city walls.

Next up, COFFEE! We went into a place called Lemon & Mint. It’s been in the center of Segovia for over 30 years & they’re well-known for their homemade pastries. Segovia’s got some pretty spectacular sweets so we figured we might as well go dessert first.

In Segovia there are three major landmarks that sort of command the attention of anyone visiting. We’ll start the three off by visiting the Aqueduct of Segovia. Constructed by the Romans in the 1st century, it served as a transport for water to Segovia from the Frio River, and this aqueduct was in service all the way up until the 1800s. I think the craziest thing about the aqueduct is that there isn’t cement holding the over 20,000 stones together. Instead it’s perfectly balanced and uses gravity. The highest point of the aqueduct is here on Plaza del Azoguejo, where it sits 92 feet high and has 167 arches total.

When you’re walking from the aqueduct to the center of town you’ll walk through an area called Calle Real. Calle Real isn’t a specific street, but rather a collection of streets that run through the heart of Segovia. You can do some shopping, eating, or enjoying some of the great buildings that provide some pretty great glimpses into the past.

Since we’re in the area, we wanted to point out this really cool building called Casa de Los Picos. It’s a 15th-century building that has 617 points and was once the home of Segovia’s governor, but it’s now an art school.

The next stop west of Plaza Mayor was arguably the grandest structure of them all, the Catedral de Segovia. The Segovia Cathedral is built on the highest point of town and dates back to 1525 when construction first began. It’s built in the gothic style and took 50 years to build. We’ve seen a ton of cathedrals so far this year across many countries but this one in my opinion is probably the most impressive when it comes to the exterior. Tickets are only 3 euros per person which in my opinion is totally worth it!

Since Segovia’s old town is built on this hill, it provides some pretty unbelievable views of the surrounding Guadarrama Mountains. One of the first things we noticed when we arrived here was that there are “miradors” or viewpoints everywhere so we try to stop and enjoy these as much as we can.

For our final major stop, we made our way to the Alcazar de Segovia. This is a HUGE medieval castle positioned at the Northwest corner of the hill in a fairly similar fashion to the Edinburgh Castle back in Scotland. This castle is shaped like the bow of a ship and the way it jets out of the rock face only adds to its glamour & appeal. It dates back to the 11th & 12th centuries and originally served as a fortress before being transformed into a royal palace for 22 different kings. Today, the alcazar is used as a museum and you can tour the Tower of Juan II, the palace, and the museum for 9 euros each.

For dinner, we felt it would be appropriate to end our time in Spain with the meal we first had when we arrived to Madrid in December. Personally, you can NEVER go wrong with Calamari Bocadillos.

Thank you so much for tuning in!! Subscribe if you're new and like the video if you enjoyed it. Thanks so much!!

Madrid Trailrunning - First Visit to Sierra de Guadarrama

Firsts are always special and so was this visit to the Sierra de Guadarrama (Madrid) for Anne and Corinne, from Amsterdam (The Netherlands). They discovered the surprising beauty of Madrid's mountains, at just half hour's drive from the city centre, by hiking through the sierra most impacting reserves: La Pedriza and Parque Regional de Peñalara.

Tatiana Mckeen TRAVEL- I speak English, Spanish, French My travels have been within the U.S., Ireland, North Africa, France, Greece, Germany, The Canary Islands, to the Spanish peninsula and a few other places. I have family and friends in Spain. I have visited places where most international tourists had never heard of; off the beaten path would be an understatement. Most of my trips have been to the northern regions of the stunning country that is Spain but I have also trotted through many of the other provinces and regions. Such variety, many spectacular locations in a country a little smaller than Texas. Castles, monasteries, palaces, and other historic buildings turned into 4-5-star hotels called Paradores were an incredible surprise even 15-20 years ago when I started touring the peninsula. When it comes to Americans, Spain in general is one of the best-kept secrets in all of Europe and I pray that it continues as such for a long time!

El Valle de los Caídos Madrid, Spain
(Wikipedia) The Valle de los Caídos or Valley of the Fallen is a Catholic basilica in the Sierra de Guadarrama, near Madrid, conceived by Spanish general Francisco Franco to honour and bury those who fell during the Spanish Civil War. It was claimed by Franco that the monument was meant to be a national act of atonement and reconciliation. The Valley of the Fallen, as a surviving monument of Franco's rule, and its Catholic basilica remain controversial, in part since 10% of the construction workforce consisted of convicts, some of whom were Popular Front political prisoners. Work started in 1940 and took over eighteen years to complete, the monument being officially inaugurated on April 1, 1959.

Guadarrama Spain Cosmos Tour European Adventure Tunnel

Spain and Portugal Cosmos Tour The Sierra de Guadarrama is a mountain range forming the main eastern section of the Sistema Central, the system of mountain ranges at the centre of the Iberian Peninsula. It is located between the Sierra de Gredos in the province of Ávila, and Sierra de Ayllón in the province of Guadalajara. The range runs southwest - northeast, extending into the province of Madrid to the south, and towards the provinces of Ávila and Segovia to the north. The chain as a whole measures approximately 80 km in length, with its highest peak, Peñalara, reaching 2,428 m above sea level (7,965 ft).
The vegetation of the mountain range is characterized by an abundance of pine forests and copses of oak and Holm oak in its lower slopes, while the montane grasslands and pastures around the summits are fringed by juniper and Spanish Broom shrubs. The mountains abound with a variety of wildlife such as Spanish ibex, roe deer, fallow deer, wild boar, badger, various types of weasel, European wild cat, fox and hare. The area is also rich in birdlife including birds of prey such as the Spanish Imperial Eagle and the Eurasian Black Vulture.
The mountain range's proximity to Madrid means it can get crowded. The area is today crossed by numerous passes and railway routes and sustains a highly developed tourism infrastructure, coupled with provisions for various mountain sports; this poses a threat to the fragile environment of the mountains.
Etymology of the name
The name, Sierra de Guadarrama (Guadarrama Mountains), is taken from the Guadarrama river and the town of Guadarrama, both of which are located in these mountains. The word Guadarrama itself is derived from the Arabic words for sandy river — Guad from wadi, meaning river, and arrama from al-rama, meaning sandy. The name was given to the river (and the village and the mountains) during the Arab occupation of Spain (722-1492 CE), and the name remained in use even after the Reconquista.
