This video is about top 10 best places to visit in armenia information but also try to cover the following subject:
-10 places to visit in armenia
-armenia tourist places
-best places in armenia
1. Yerevan.

Despite being one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, Yerevan has surprisingly little to show for it in terms of historic buildings and monuments. This is because Soviet planners knocked down most of them in the 1920s in an attempt to create a ‘perfect city’ in the vein of Paris or Saint Petersburg.

2.Geghard Monastery.

Lying on the outskirts of the picturesque town of Garni, Geghard Monastery is a very popular day-trip destination from the capital and is certainly worth visiting if you have the chance. Carved out of the mountainside, with majestic peaks overlooking it, the famous monastery has a beautiful church for you to wander around.

3.Noravank.

Surrounded by ruddy red cliff walls, this incredible 13th-century monastery is one of the most popular tourist sites in the country, and with good reason. Sporting some beautiful facades that are full of elaborate carvings and motifs, Noravank is a delight to visit.

4.Lake Sevan.

The largest lake in the whole of the Caucasus, Lake Sevan’s tranquil waters seemingly stretch off into the distance forever. It is a popular holiday destination among both locals and foreigners alike due to the plethora of amazing recreational opportunities that it boasts.

5.Garni.

Located just a short distance away from Yerevan at the foot of the Khosrov Forest State Reserve, Garni is an enjoyable place to spend some time – although most people visit primarily to see its magnificent first century AD temple and delightful monastery.

6.Khor Virap Monastery.

Set among some absolutely jaw-dropping scenery, the Khor Virap Monastery is well worth a visit. A popular pilgrimage site, the monastery is renowned throughout the country for its stunning backdrop that sees Mount Ararat in Turkey loom dramatically in the distance.

7. Areni Wine Country.

As grapes and vineyards have been cultivated here for over 6,000 years, it should come as no surprise to learn that the Areni Wine Country boasts some of the nation’s most delicious wines.

8. Debed Canyon.

Home to an astonishing array of little villages and towns, which each boast their own unique look, feel, and identity, traveling through the Debed Canyon is a magical experience.

9. Goris.

Lying on the banks of the Vararak River in a scenic valley hemmed in by mountains, Goris in the southeast of the country is a lovely place to visit. There are many fascinating historical and cultural landmarks for you to check out, alongside its amazing landscapes.

10. Dilijan National Park.

Home to some gorgeous scenery, Dilijan National Park in the northeast of the country will delight nature lovers and outdoor aficionados alike.

Part 2 - INCREDIBLE Armenian Road Trip | Goris to Dilijan

We had a great first couple of days on our Armenia road trip!! We visited several monasteries, learned how to make lavish, did a wine tasting in the Areni region and visited a very impressive waterfall! If you have not watched Part 1, we highly recommend you check that out here :)

Next up on our road trip, we visited the beautiful Tatev Monastery outside of Goris. It is probably the most famous monastery in all of Armenia set in a deep gorge with snow-capped mountains behind it and a huge waterfall below. It really felt like it was straight out of a fairytale.

From Goris we drove to Lake Sevan. Lake Sevan is actually one of the largest freshwater, high-altitude lakes in Eurasia. It is surrounded by snow capped mountains and is very picturesque. We saw a couple of monasteries on the banks of the lake, we did a cheese tasting at the Mikayelyan Family Farm and had a delicious lunch at Semoyi Mot where we ate fresh fish from the lake!

From Sevan, we made our way to Dilijan, the Switzerland of Armenia. We did a hike in this beautiful area which is surrounded by rugged mountain peaks. There were thousands of blooming wild flowers and the hike was incredibly quiet and peaceful without another soul around!

Finally we made our way back to the capital city of Yerevan to return our rental car. We celebrated a great road trip at the Ararat Brandy Factory with a tour and brandy tasting and then had one final Armenian feast for dinner!

Episode 11 - Armenia - Alaverdi, Areni, Goris & Etchmiadzin / 365 days off - Travel around the world

ARMENIA: ALAVERDI, DILIJAN, ARENI, GORIS AND ETCHMIADZIN

Travelling on our own to all corners of Armenia was definitely a great experience. From a cultural point of view, we did stop 25 times to visit monasteries, churches and historical sites.

Our 3 favorites were:
Noravank, on a hill at the end of its canyon, it really had a Grand Canyon feel
Marmashen, at the bottom of a lushy green valley, a very peaceful atmosphere and a great site for a picnic.
The Noratus Cemetery, a field of Khachkars, close to Lake Sevan, strolling amongst the cross-stones and their unique carvings let us see one of Armenia’s identities.

From a human point of view, the last 10 days were absolutely fantastic! We met Olga, Irina & Stepan in Alaverdi, Davit and his sisters in Areni, Arthur, Sonna and their lovely children in Etchmiadzin. We had a great time with all of them including the best local and fresh meals we had so far.
If you are around instead of taking day tours from Yerevan, you really should rent a car to explore the country and spend time with people in the different provinces.

WE DID SPECIFICALLY ENJOY
The Monasteries of Haghpat and Sanahin, we had a guided tour by Anna & Anoush, 2 young adults from the Alaverdi English Club (see Best Kept Secret Tip section for details).
Goshavank, another Monastery, we were welcomed by a young priest who saw us looking for frescoes and carvings described in the Bradt guide. Unfortunately he could only speak a few words of english but one of his friend was there and helped with the translation calling another friend on his mobile! The visit took quite some time and we were moved by the priest trying to pass on his passion for his church.

ACCOMMODATIONS
Iris B&B in Alaverdi, the best homestay in the Lori region. We even got interviewed by the Armenian TV during our stay. They were filming a documentary about the B&B in the country.
Areni Wine Art in Areni, Davit and his family are doing huge efforts to drag tourists in the village. They organize hiking trips, organic meals including traditional Armenian barbeque in the “tonir“, dancing and cooking lessons or anything you would request from them.
Artson B&B in Etchmiadzin, Arthur and Sonna’s goal is to make you feel at home and they’re pretty good at it! All the family is eager to exchange with you about the country, travelling and Armenian history. You may be lucky enough to attend a private concert given by their 2nd daughter, Hasmik, who is studying vocal art in College.

RESTAURANTS
As stated before do not even bother looking for restaurants while in homestays. All of them will gladly prepare you fresh local food at unbeatable fares.

BEST KEPT SECRET TIP
The English Club in Alaverdi, is a NGO trying to improve the economic situation teaching english to anyone interested in the village. They are really doing a great job and we liked very much spending some time with its members. They are arranging day hikes and several guided tours to the historical sites of the province. We enjoyed the guided tours at Sanahin and Haghpat very much. The young guides gave us insights about the local history that a common guide book would never tell. Do not hesitate to contact them when in the region to get your private guided tour!

To all the English Club Members, thank you so much for your warm welcome during our visit to the Club, keep up the good work and hope to come back soon!

EXPLORE ARMENIA - City or Wilderness?

As part of our quest to explore Armenia, we couldn't come to this incredible country, rich in history and culture, without discovering its capital city, Yerevan.
But as always we get itchy feet and the wilderness calls us to those wide open spaces, something Armenia has in abundance.
In this video we mix city and wilderness, with traffic and sightseeing in Yerevan, and the most incredible wild camping in some dramatic locations. Exploring Armenia has been an epic journey, as well as finding a lively and cosmopolitan capital city, we've also found off-grid heaven in the breathtaking landscapes and big skies.

We're currently in Georgia and (fingers crossed!) we'll get into Azerbaijan, on the edge of the Caspian Sea.

GORIS Armenia, Central square 360º view

Goris (Armenian: Գորիս) is a town and the centre of the urban community of Goris, in Syunik. Syunik (Armenian: Սյունիք, Azerbaijani: Zangezur) is a province at the south of Armenia. Located in the valley of river Goris (or Vararak), it is 254 km from the Armenian capital Yerevan and 67 km from the provincial center Kapan. Goris is the second-largest city in Syunik in terms of population. During the 2011 census, Goris had a population of 20,591, down from 23,261 reported at the 2001 census. However, as per the 2016 official estimate, the population of Goris was 20,300. Goris is the seat of the Diocese of Syunik of the Armenian Apostolic Church.
Following the administrative reforms in 2016, the community of Goris was enlarged to include the surrounding villages of Akner, Bardzravan, Hartashen, Karahunj, Khndzoresk, Nerkin Khndzoresk, Shurnukh, Verishen, and Vorotan.
Throughout its history, Goris has been known as Kores and Gorayk. However, there are several explanations for the origin of the name. It is supposed that the name Goris is derived from the Indo-European prelanguage words gor (rock), es (to be), i.e. Goris/Kores meaning a rocky place. There was a dwelling in the ancient times in the same area of the town.
The name Goris had many variants including: Goristsa, Kores, Gores, Gorayk, Goru, and Geryusy.
The area of Goris has been settled since the Stone Age. Goris was first mentioned in the history by the Urartian period. King Rusa I of Urartu who reigned between 735 and 713 BC, left a cuneiform, where he mentioned that among the 23 countries conquered by him, Goristsa country was one of them. The scientists suppose that it is the same Goris.
During the Middle Ages, the Goris -settlement was situated in the eastern part of the present Goris, on the left bank of Goris river. It was called Kores and coincided with one of the villages of Goru and Gorayk mentioned by Stephen Orbelian in his 13th-century work History of Syunik Province.

Between the 12th and 15th centuries, Syunik along with the rest of the historic territories of Armenia suffered from the Seljuk, Mongol, Aq Qoyunlu and Kara Koyunlu invasions, respectively.
At the beginning of the 16th century, Syunik became part of the Erivan Beglarbegi within the Safavid Persia. The current spelling of the name was first mentioned in 1624, in a handwriting by Barsegh Yerets. In the 17-18th centuries princes Melik Husenyans ruled the region.
At the beginning of the 18th century, the region was the centre of the Armenian liberation campaign led by David Bek, against Safavid Persia and the invading Ottoman Turks. In 1750, the region became part of the newly-formed Karabakh Khanate.
At the beginning of the 19th century, many territories of Armenia -including the region of old Kores of Syunik-, became part of the Russian Empire as a result of the Treaty of Gulistan signed on 24 October 1813, between Russia and Qajar Iran following the Russo-Persian War of 1804–13.
Under the Russian rule, the town of Goris was founded in 1870 to become the centre of Zangezursky Uyezd, within the Elisabethpol Governorate of the Russian Empire. In 1876, the construction of new Goris was completed near the old town of Kores, with the initiative of the head of Starastky province and recommendation of Prince Manuchar-Bek Melik Husenyan, and the major city plan designed by a German architect. At the end of the 19th century the economical and cultural life of Goris was greatly improved.
With the establishment of the Republic of Armenia in 1918, Goris was included within the Zangezur gavar (Zangezur region) of the newly-founded republic. However, after the fall of the First Republic of Armenia in 1920, the 2nd Pan-Zangezurian congress held in Tatev on 26 April 1921, announced the independence of the self-governing regions of Daralakyaz (Vayots Dzor), Zangezur, and parts of Mountainous Artsakh, under the name of the Republic of Mountainous Armenia (Lernahaystani Hanrapetutyun), with Goris as a de facto capital city. However, the self-proclaimed republic had a short life, when the Red Army conducted massive military operations in the region during June–July 1921, attacking Syunik from the north and east. As a result of fierce battles, the Republic of Mountainous Armenia capitulated on 13 July 1921, following Soviet Russia's promises to keep the mountainous region of Zangezur as part of Soviet Armenia.
Under the Soviet rule, Goris served as the regional centre of Zangezur gavar of Soviet Armenia. With the establishment of the Goris raion in 1930, the town became the regional centre of the newly-founded district.

Rainy Goris & Medieval Cave City | Syunik Armenia ????????

We hitchiked 3 hours with a lovely Iranian truck driver to the small city of Goris in the Syunik Province of Armenia ????????

Believe it or not we spent 6 days here and it rained every single day apart from the day we were leaving! It was like being back in the UK....

This made our time in Goris pretty miserable and we didn't get the greatest impressions of the town, however we made the most and ventured out of the city to the incredible medieval cave dwellings in the mountains.

They say people lived in these all the way up to the 1960s which is mental.

Hope you enjoy the bits we filmed here while we had the chance when the rain wasn't pouring.

If you want us to keep travelling and giving back to local people you can support us right here -
