Glens Falls NY - Everything You Need to Know

As a halfway point between Fort Edward and Fort William Henry, the falls was the site of several battles during the French and Indian War and the Revolutionary War. The then-hamlet was mostly destroyed by fire twice during the latter conflict, forcing the Quakers to abandon the settlement until the war ended in 1783. Fire also ravaged the village in 1864, 1884, and 1902.

Panoramic map with list of landmarks from 1884 published by L.R. Burleigh
The area was originally called Chepontuc (Iroquois; difficult place to get around), also referred to as the Great Carrying Place, but was renamed The Corners by European-American settlers. In 1766 it was renamed Wing's Falls for Abraham Wing – the leader of the group of Quakers who established the permanent settlement – and for the falls on the Hudson River. Wing's claim to the name of the falls and the hamlet was transferred to Colonel Johannes Glen of Schenectady in 1788, either on collection of a debt, as a result of a game of cards, or in exchange for hosting a party for mutual friends, depending on which local legend is believed. Colonel Glen changed the name to Glen's Falls, though it was often printed with varying spelling such as Glenn's, or Glens. The spelling Glens Falls came to be the common usage.

A post office was established in 1808. Glens Falls became an incorporated village in 1839, and was re-incorporated in 1874 and 1887,[citation needed] expanding the village to what would become the city limits when the state legislature granted the city charter in 1908, at which time the city became independent from the town of Queensbury.

The Best Places to Visit in New York State, USA

The Best Places to Visit in New York State, USA

New York State  holds the biggest pull for visitors from around the world. The entire state of New York has plenty of attractions to keep you entertained. Besides the urban allure, culture, and shopping of Manhattan, much of New York State is still, in many ways, waiting to be discovered. The state is endowed with outstanding beauty and diversity of scenery. Although New Yorkers have long vacationed in the Catskill and Adirondack mountains, and at Long Island beaches, most have seen too little of the state between its tourist bookends, New York City and Niagara Falls. The historic Hudson Valley, a majestic river lined with elegant estates, is finally positioning itself as a destination, not just a day trip from the city.

Planning a trip to a state as large and diverse as New York involves a lot of decision making, so in this video we've tried to give some directions. We've chosen what we feel is the very best the state has to offer -- the places and experiences you won't want to miss. This video gives you an overview of New York State's highlights to get you started planning your trip.

Ricketts Glen, Amazing Waterfalls in Central PA

We traveled to Benton PA in June of 2022 to hike the 8 mile Ricketts Glen Falls Loop Train. There are a total of 21 waterfalls on the loop trail, relatively easy trail but some elevation changes. Popular location, and gets pretty busy, start early in the day to avoid the crowds. If you are near the area, please come and check it out.

Fishermen exploring the lower reaches Kitchen Creek discovered waterfalls on the land owned by Colonel R. Bruce Ricketts. Explorations revealed that two branches of the Kitchen Creek cut through deep gorges in a series of waterfalls, then united at Waters Meet and flowed through a glen amount giant pines, hemlocks, and oaks.

The lower glen came to be called Ricketts Glen. Many of the magnificent trees in this area are over 300 years old. Diameters of almost four feet are common and many trees tower to 100 feet in height. Southern northern hardwood species meet here, creating an extensive variety of trees.

Colonel Ricketts built trails to the area of the waterfalls, which came to be know as the Glens Natural Area. The Glens became a registered National Natural Landmark in 1969. In 1993, it became a State Park Natural Area and will be protected and maintained in a natural state.

Hiking Adventures at Watkins Glen with Fall Foliage Scenic Drive.

Looking for some of the best waterfalls in New York? Easily one of the best things to do in Watkins Glen is visit the Watkins Glen State Park. The lower entrance is located just a 5-minute drive from downtown Watkins Glen making it easily accessible. The upper entrance is also an easy drive, you can start at either end and walk your way through the gorgeous narrow gorge pathway with one stunning long cascading waterfall after another.
We recommend starting at the lower entrance early in the morning to beat the crowds and just slowly climb your way up the gradual path that leads to one cascading waterfall after another surrounded by the forest and lush green foliage and moss if you’re there in the summer.
We recommend making your way all the way up to Rainbow Falls, this is the iconic and most mesmerizing spot on the trail where there’s a bridge, a wispy waterfall the trail leads behind, and one of the waterfalls that’s part of the river that runs through the gorge making the entire gorge one long cascading waterfall.
One of the best things to do in Watkins Glen is check out Seneca Lake which is incredibly convenient since Watkins Glen is located right on the south end of the lake and harbor. Whether you are looking to just take a stroll along the harbor, drive around the lake, or enjoy some water activities right there.

Hope you enjoy your visit and if you have any questions please comment down below. Thank you guys and be safe on your next adventures... Till next time!
