LAKE OHRID North Macedonia ???????? - Balkan PARADISE & Europe's Best Kept Secret | 197 Countries 3 Kids

Join us as we visit Ohrid, North Macedonia - one of Europe's best-kept secrets!

Ohrid is a town in the southwestern part of North Macedonia, lying on the shores of Lake Ohrid. Together they make the most bustling tourist destination in the country.

Ohrid is famous for having 365 churches over the centuries - one for each day of the year - hence why the town is known as the Balkan and European Jerusalem. The entire Ohrid region is protected by UNESCO under the world heritage program.

We entered the country through the Serbian—N. Macedonian border. The only thing we needed to show was the Green card for the car and we were on our way to Ohrid.

A good thing to know is that there are tolls on the road — the prices are not so bad though, varying between 1 and 2 Dollars per toll. We couldn’t find an ATM at the gas station, but luckily they were kind enough to charge our card and give us some cash back (something you don’t often see in other European countries).

After almost 3 hours on the road, we finally reached Ohrid. We checked in at a cozy place in the downtown area, called City Inn, which was going to be our home for the next few days.

The next morning, we decided to take a walk to the waterfront. As we explored the center and the old part of the town, we realized why Ohrid is also known as the Pearl of Macedonia.

One, because of the picturesque views, and two, because of the actual pearls you can find all over the town. (There are several old families that produce the famous Ohrid pearls, but the true authentic technique is a well-kept secret.)

Here, we met Zoran, the programmer we have worked with for the past two years and visited his office.

We ended the day with some card tricks and a delicious dinner with our friends.

On day 2, we visited Samuel’s Fortress. On our hike up, we ran into an amazing ancient amphitheater that was used for festivals and gladiator fights. Today, it's home to the most prestigious summer music, dance, and theatre festival in North Macedonia.

Samuel’s Fortress was the capital of the First Bulgarian Empire and 10 centuries later, it’s still standing strong. The view from the top is breathtaking and it only costs 1 Euro to enter (make sure to bring cash).

Within the fortress walls, we found one of the most important archeological sites and holy grounds in N. Macedonia - Plaoshnik.

As we climbed down, we were amazed by the beauty of the lake and had the chance to see the most photographed church in North Macedonia, St. John the Theologian at Kaneo.

Next, we visited the church of St. Sophia, built in the 11th century. This place is of monumental value for Macedonian culture, architecture, and history.

We decided to end the day in the company of our dear friends we met back in 2014 and have some delicious food at a local restaurant.

Ohrid is truly a destination not to be missed. Be sure to add this hidden gem to your European wish list.

Top best places to visit in Skopje, Macedonia
Skopje is the capital and largest city of the Republic of Macedonia.

It is the country’s political, cultural, economic, and academic center. Skopje is known as the City of Statues thanks to its impressive monuments situated all over the city.

In the center of town is the Macedonia Square, the biggest public space in Macedonia.
In its middle stands the Warrior on a Horse, a fountain and a statue of Alexander the Great.

The symbol of the city the Stone Bridge connects Macedonia Square to the Old Bazaar.

Around the square, which serves as a main entrance to the Old Bazaar, are:
The Museum of the Macedonian Struggle,
The National Theater,
And the Holocaust Memorial, a museum and multimedia center about the history of the Jews in the Balkans.

Nearby is another representative square with the Macedonian Opera and Ballet and a Philharmonic Hall.

And next to it is the Art Bridge, the most beautiful bridge in the city full of sculptures of noted artists.

Also worth a visit are:
The Porta Macedonia, a triumphal arch dedicated to 20 years of Macedonian independence.

The Mother Teresa House, a beautiful and tranquil modern chapel and a museum.

And the Church of St Clement of Ohrid, the largest cathedral of the Macedonian Orthodox Church.

One of the most important places to go in Skopje is the Old Bazaar. It is the largest marketplace in the Balkans famous for its cultural and historical values.

Beside the stores there are some interesting objects within the Old Bazaar, such as:
The National Museum, one of the oldest museums in the country.

The Double Hamam, a Turkish bath, today used as a gallery.

The Church of the Ascension of Jesus, a tiny orthodox temple with a pleasant courtyard.

And the Mustafa Pasha Mosque, one of the most beautiful Islamic buildings in Macedonia.

In the vicinity of the Old Bazaar there are other prominent mosques, like:
The Sultan Murat Mosque, the biggest mosque in Macedonia.

The Gazi Isa Bey’s Mosque, the only seljuk mosque in Europe.

And the Yahya Pasha Mosque which has a roof in the shape of a pyramid and the tallest minaret in Skopje.

But the biggest attraction in the city is the Kale Fortress.

The historic fortifications was build on the highest hill in the Skopje valley

and now offer great views over the city.

SKOPJE | THE CAPITAL OF NORTH MACEDONIA | CITY OF STATUES | TOUR JULY 2022

Before I started making this video I wanted to know how travel vlogs describe the city and what my city is most popular for. Every traveler calls Skopje the “city of statues” because there are statues all over the city, especially in the central area but, no native is referring to the city like this. Most of them were built during the “Skopje 2014” project with the goal of restoring the glare that the city lost in a devastating earthquake that destroyed 80% of the city on the 26th of July, 1963. The place that seats as a reminder of this horrible event is the OLD RAILWAY STATION. The clock shows the exact time of the earthquake (05:17am).

SKOPJE has been inhabited since at least 4000 B.C. and survived at least three devastating earthquakes (518, 1555 & 1963 A.C.), at least one devastating fire (1689 A.C.), and many... many wars.

Like the rest of the country is most famous for its food and rich history. You will find out more about that on this tour. You’ll also see the places that are worthwhile visiting and where to go if you wanna eat or buy something.

Basically, you'll get a feel of the city and a history lesson.

Population: 526.502

Debar Maalo is 12 min. walk away from Square Macedonia”. It's the heart of the modern culture of Skopje. Filled with bars and restaurants, it's the posh part of the city and one of the most expensive residential areas, together with Vodno”.

The “City Park is 12 min. walk away from Square Macedonia” and spreads across 4361hectares of land. It's home to a lot of sport-clubs and perfect for fine walks, fine dining, and leisure.

If you cross “Stone Bridge” (one of the oldest structures in the city), going from Square Macedonia you will arrive at the OLD TOWN.

The “Old Bazaar”, as part of the OLD TOWN, is one of the oldest and largest markets in the Balkans at least since the 12th century. Here you can find a wide variety of traditional craftwork, fashion, furniture shops, and a lot of jewelry and restaurants. You can really see the Turkish (Ottoman) heritage around.

“Kale Fortress” was built in the 6th century A.C., most probably by the Roman Emperor Justinian 1st. Since then it was destroyed and reconstructed multiple times.
Here are the rest of the structures you'll find there:
