[4K] Texas State Penitentiary - Huntsville Unit - Walls Unit Huntsville, Texas

Texas State Penitentiary at Huntsville or Huntsville Unit (HV), nicknamed Walls Unit, is a Texas state prison located in Huntsville, Texas, United States. The approximately 54.36-acre (22.00 ha) facility, near Downtown Huntsville, is operated by the Correctional Institutions Division of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ), administered as within Region I.[1] The facility, the oldest Texas state prison, opened in 1849.[2]

The unit houses the execution chamber of the State of Texas. It is the most active execution chamber in the United States, with 573 (as of September 28, 2021)[3] executions since 1982, when the death penalty was reinstated in Texas (see Lists of people executed in Texas).[4]

The prison's first inmates arrived on October 2, 1849.[5] The unit was named after the County of Huntsville.[6] Robert Perkinson, the author of Texas Tough: The Rise of America’s Prison Empire, wrote that the unit was, within Texas, the first public work of any importance.[7]

Originally Huntsville Unit was only for white Texans; the only penalties available to black Texans were whipping and hanging. During the American Civil War, prisoners at Huntsville produced tents and uniforms for Confederate forces at the prison textile factory.[8] After the Civil War ended, Huntsville Unit was the only prison in the former Confederate States of America to remain.[5] Perkinson stated that the prison became, within the state, the first racially integrated public institution.[7]

Originally women in the Texas Prison System were housed in the Huntsville Unit.[9] Beginning in 1883 women were housed in the Johnson Farm, a privately owned cotton plantation near Huntsville.[10] During this time there was some concern that immoral practices may be resorted to in regards to the female prisoners.[11]

Historically the prison served as the administrative headquarters of the Texas Prison System and the Texas Department of Corrections;[12][13] the superintendent and the other executive officers worked in the prison, and all of the central offices of the system's departments and all of the permanent records were located in the prison.[12] In 1934 John Lomax and Alan Lomax recorded the earliest known recording of This Little Light of Mine when they recorded Jim Boyd of Jacksonville, Texas, singing at prison.[14][15]

In 1974, the prison was the site of an eleven-day siege, one of the longest hostage-taking sieges in United States history.[16] Three armed inmates (Fred Carrasco, Ignacio Cuevas, and Rudy Dominquez) held several hostages in the education department. The ring leader, Carrasco, had been a porter in the chapel. Cuevas usually worked in the inmate dining hall. Ten hostages were employees of the prison system: two were educators, and one was a guard. Later on, the prison chaplain would also become a hostage. Four prisoners were also held as hostages. On the final day, the inmates tried to escape using chalkboards and hostages as shields.[17][page needed][18] Dominquez was killed in the attempt. Carrasco killed Elizabeth Beseda, then shot himself. Julia Standley was also killed that day. Ignacio Cuevas was executed on May 23, 1991, for her murder.[19][20]

Day Trip to Glen Rose ???? (FULL EPISODE) S8 E8

Right in the middle of the Paluxy and Brazos Rivers, lies this old-fashioned town, and I mean really old-fashioned — it’s the Dinosaur Capital of Texas! Whether you’re exploring prehistoric footprints, walking among fake dinos or roaming around with modern beasts, you’re sure to have a roaring good time in Glen Rose.

While Jurassic Park doesn’t actually exist, the next best thing is Dinosaur World. Throughout this theme park, you can walk in the giant shadows of fake life-sized dinos, and learn about the real beasts that used to roam this land. There’s even a guided “fossil dig” for the little trippers!

At Fossil Rim, you can get up close and personal with modern day beasts on a safari. Feed all kinds of wild animals in their natural habitat from giraffes to rhinos from your own car window! What makes this Wildlife Center even cooler is that it’s helping to reintroduce endangered species back into the wild.

Learn about a different point of view at the Creation Evidence Museum which challenges the mainstream idea that dinosaurs were extinct long before humans walked the earth. Museum Owner Karl Baugh believes that dinos and man co-existed, and has collected several artifacts that support his theory. Exhibits of interest include human footprints displaced by dinosaur footprints, human artifacts found in the wrong layers of stone according to science and even a Noah’s Ark recreation that shows dinosaurs on the ark.

If you’re in town on a weekend in September and October, make time to watch “the greatest story ever told” performed in a new way in The Promise. Since 1989, this musical production has been bringing the story of Jesus Christ — from birth to resurrection — to life for thousands of folks. From an amazing set to an outstanding cast, The Promise is a must-see when you’re in Glen Rose.

To eat like a local, grab a bite to eat at The Green Pickle, a local burger joint that also serves a mean breakfast. Stop in for loaded hash browns and a grilled flaky honey bun smothered in butter in the morning or a jalapeno burger and live music in the evening.

If you’re still craving something sweet, hit Pie Peddlers on the Square for a warm slice of pie. Choose between 15 freshly baked pies including Raspberry Rhubarb, chocolate and pecan. Pair your pie with a Nutella milkshake from the Shoo-Fly Soda Shop next door. A match made in dessert heaven!

After a day of trippin’, you’re sure to feel ravenous — luckily Loco Coyote is the perfect place for a hefty appetite. With moist barbecue, fried fish and burgers bigger than your face (my favorite is the Jack Daniel’s Burger), you’ll be stuffed and happy in no time. There is usually a long wait for this local hot spot, but hanging out with folks is just part of the fun at this joint!

Walk in the footprints of actual dinosaurs at Dinosaur Valley State Park. The thousands of footprints left by Texas dinosaurs in this park tell new stories about these giant beasts and their way of life. However, the dino tracks aren’t the only awesome thing about this state park — the Paluxy River, which flows through the park, is perfect for swimming and finding even more dino-print discoveries.

Killeen, TX: A Military Town with a Heart

Killeen, Texas was founded in 1870 by a group of settlers who came to the area to establish a farming community. The town was originally called Palo Alto, but it was renamed Killeen in 1881 after Frank P. Killeen, a railroad official who helped to plat the town. Killeen grew slowly for its first few decades, but it began to grow rapidly in the early 1900s after the discovery of oil in the area. The town's population doubled between 1900 and 1920, and it continued to grow steadily throughout the 20th century.

In 1942, Fort Hood was established near Killeen. The military base has had a major impact on the town, and it is now the largest employer in the area. Killeen is now a thriving city with a population of over 150,000 people.

Whats Up With Westcliff Park, Belton Lake

In Sept 2020 we were returning from the coastal bend area of Texas and had the opportunity to visit Westcliff Park on Belton Lake. Belton lake was built and is maintained by the US Army Corps Of Engineers. Westcliff Park is one of three C.O.E. Campgrounds on Belton Lake.
Our overnight visit to Westcliff Park coincided with a Texas size cold front so the weather was gray and dreary not at all conducive to good video. This park is not too large but it is quite pretty. Most of the campsites are waterside pull through.
An ideal place to spend a week or weekend camping and boating Westcliff Park on Belton Lake is also a great place to just spend the day relaxing on the beach watching the kids take a swim.
Come along with me as I explore Westcliff Park on Belton Lake.

US 84 - Lubbock to Post, Texas

US-84 enters into Texas at Farwell, concurrent with US-70 from New Mexico. The US-70 overlap ends in Muleshoe. US-84 bypasses the towns of Littlefield and Shallowater before entering Lubbock. The highway just passes north of the Texas Tech University campus and enters downtown as Avenue Q. As Avenue Q, the highway parallels I-27 before crossing it, just north of that highway's southern terminus. Leaving the city, US-84 serves the towns of Post and Snyder before reaching Roscoe, where it begins its overlap with I-20.

The two highways run through Sweetwater before reaching Abilene. US-84 leaves the interstate on the western side of the city, running with I-20's business loop. US-84 joins US-83/US-277, with US-277 leaving the concurrency after a short distance. US-84 leaves US-83, northeast of Tuscola. US-84 runs southeast to Coleman, overlapping with US-283 in the process and joining US-67. After leaving Brownwood, US-84 leaves US-67 and joins US-183. US-84 becomes a solo route again in Goldthwaite, traveling through Gatesville. In Gatesville, the hwy meets SH-36, which coincidentally also runs to Abilene, albeit in a more direct way than US-84.

East of McGregor, US-84 becomes a 4-lane divided highway before becoming a freeway in Woodway. At SH-6, US-84 becomes a surface street, running through Waco. The highway enters Bellmead before leaving the Waco area. Several miles to the east, the highway enters Palestine. US-84 runs through several smaller communities before crossing over the Toledo Bend Reservoir, into Louisiana, running towards Mansfield.

US-84 is part of the El Camino East/West Corridor, which spans five states starting in Texas
