Liberia Tourism, West Africa - Unravel Travel TV

Liberia, officially the Republic of Liberia, is a country in West Africa bordered by Sierra Leone to its west, Guinea to its north and Cote d'Ivoire to its east. It covers an area of 111,369 km sq and is home to about 3.7 million people.

Liberia is a country with historical ties to the United States. It was founded by freed black slaves during the pre-Civil War antebellum era of the nineteenth century. The capital, Monrovia, was named after James Monroe. Liberia's flag closely resembles the American flag, reflecting the historical ties of Liberia to the United States.

History
Anthropological research shows the region of Liberia was inhabited at least as far back as the 12th century, perhaps earlier. Between 1461 and the late 17th century, Portuguese, Dutch and British traders had contacts and trading posts in Liberia. The Portuguese had named the area Costa da Pimenta, later translated as Grain Coast, because of the abundance of grains of melegueta pepper.

In 1822, the American Colonization Society which was the primary vehicle for returning black Americans to greater freedom in Africa established Liberia as a place to send people who were formerly enslaved. This movement of black people by the A.C.S. had broad support nationwide among white people in America. While the institution of slavery in America grew, reaching almost four million slaves by the mid-1800s, a growing population in the U.S. chose to emigrate to Liberia as well. African-Americans gradually migrated to the colony and became known as Americo-Liberians, from whom many present day Liberians trace their ancestry. On July 26, 1847, Americo-Liberian settlers declared independence for the Republic of Liberia.

Liberia retained its independence during the Scramble for Africa but lost its claim to extensive territories that were annexed by Britain and France. Economic development was hindered by the decline of markets for Liberian goods in the late 19th century and by indebtedness on a series of loans, payments on which drained the economy.

On April 12, 1980, a successful military coup was staged by a group of noncommissioned army officers led by Master Sergeant Samuel Kanyon Doe. The soldiers were a mixture of the various ethnic groups that claimed marginalization at the hands of the minority Americo-Liberian settlers. In late 1989, the First Liberian Civil War began and the country was in a state of war to varying degrees until 2003. Liberia is recovering from a devastating civil war that ended with a ceasefire in August 2003.

While the country is now on the mend, it has not yet redeveloped the necessary infrastructure to sustain a large increase in tourism, with little for the average visitor outside Monrovia. Towns like Buchanan, Ganta etc are little more than a collection of shanty houses with no decent hotels or food. Monrovia, in general, is calmer than the more far-flung areas although the situation countrywide is improving with the presence of UN Peacekeepers. Fear should not stop you enjoying your visit but act with caution. Travel outside Monrovia is very difficult and not advisable on your own.

Climate
The equatorial climate is hot year-round with heavy rainfall from May to October with a short interlude in mid-July to August. During the winter months of November to March dry dust-laden harmattan winds blow inland causing many problems for residents.

Liberia: The Love of Liberty

Would you like to explore the impressive history of Liberia, as well as interesting facts about the country and its resilient economy?
You wouldn’t mention 10 African countries before you remember Liberia, a captivating country with a rich culture and blessed with fascinating flora and fauna but marred by a turbulent history. This is a country that survived a ruthless bloody civil war from the late 20th century to the early 21st century. This is a country Europeans love to call the Grain Coast or Pepper Coast for the reason we’d love to discuss later. In this video, we want to explore Africa’s oldest republic. It has a rich history, unique geography, gorgeous people, and interesting facts. As you follow along in this exciting tour of the country of George Weah, kindly endeavor to identify points you would love to comment on.

About Liberia: Location and Size
Officially known as the Republic of Liberia, this a country located on the West African coast. With a beautiful Atlantic coastline along its southern and southwestern regions, it shares its northwestern border with Sierra Leone and its northern border with Guinea. Ivory Coast (or Cote d’Ivoire) is on the east. Liberia’s capital city is Monrovia, a city named after former President James Monroe of the United States, one of the prominent figures behind how freed Americans would have Liberia colonized. Monrovia doubles as the largest city in Liberia. The name of the country is a derivative of the Latin word “liber” which means “free.”
This is in recognition of the fact that this country was created to be home to liberated African-American slaves. This partly explains why the country’s flag is modeled on the USA’s. The single star on the Liberian flag symbolizes the country’s status as the only independent Western-style country in Africa. It also has 11 stripes representing the 11 men who endorsed the Liberian Declaration of Independence. We’ll tell you more about that later when discussing the history of the country.
Liberia is a medium-sized country with a total area of 43,000 square miles. This makes it the 102nd largest country in the world. Based on the 2023 estimate, about 5,506,280 people are living in the country making it the 120th most populous country. Based on the population and the area, the population density of Liberia is about 92 people per 1 square mile. English, precisely Liberian English, is the official language of Liberia, but the country has over 25 other languages by different ethnic groups and in different parts of the country.

Geographical Features
Liberia lies between latitudes 4 degrees and 9 degrees north, and longitudes 7 degrees and 12 degrees west. Almost one-fifth of the country’s population lives in Monrovia alone. According to the last census, other populous cities in the country are Gbarnga, Buchanan, and Ganta with respective populations of 56,986, 50,245, and 42,077. The country’s landscape is characterized by majorly flat to rolling coastal plains containing mangroves and swamps, which also rise to a rolling plateau to low mountains in the northeast.
The country has 15 counties for the purpose of administrative divisions. These, in turn, are divided into 90 districts while each district is made up of clans. The land is rich in biodiversity, rich in many rare species of flora and fauna.

History of Liberia
Let’s begin the history of contemporary Liberia from 1461 when it welcomed the first European visit. Portuguese sailor Pedro de Sintra reached the Liberian coast that year though the name Liberia had not been known. Between then and the late 17th century, Dutch and British traders also had contacts and trading centers in the region. While the Portuguese named the region Costa da Pimenta (meaning Pepper Coast), it was later known as the Grain Coast because of the abundance of Melegueta pepper grains. The traders engaged in trade by barter to exchange commodities and goods with local people.

Top 10 Liberia Cities By Population

Liberia, a country located on the western coast of Africa, has a population history influenced by various factors. Here is an overview of Liberia's population history:

1. Settlement of Free African-Americans: Liberia was founded as a settlement for freed African-Americans and free-born African-Americans in the early 19th century. The American Colonization Society established the colony of Liberia in 1821, and the population initially consisted of African-Americans who immigrated from the United States.

2. Indigenous Population: Liberia's population also includes indigenous ethnic groups who were already living in the region prior to the arrival of the freed African-Americans. These indigenous groups, such as the Kpelle, Bassa, Gio, and Mano, among others, make up a significant portion of Liberia's population.

3. Population Growth: Over the years, Liberia's population has experienced steady growth. In the early years of the settlement, the population grew primarily through the immigration of African-Americans and the resettlement of freed slaves. The population continued to grow through natural increase and the blending of indigenous and settler populations.

4. Decline due to Conflicts: Liberia went through a series of civil wars and conflicts in the late 20th century and early 21st century, which had a significant impact on the population. The conflicts led to loss of life, displacement, and emigration, resulting in a decline in population during those periods.

5. Post-Conflict Recovery: Following the end of the civil wars in the early 2000s, Liberia embarked on a period of post-conflict recovery and reconstruction. Efforts were made to stabilize the country and encourage the repatriation of displaced individuals and refugees, contributing to a gradual increase in population.

6. Urbanization: Liberia has experienced a process of urbanization, with an increasing proportion of the population residing in urban areas. Monrovia, the capital city, has attracted a significant portion of the urban population, leading to the growth and development of urban centers.

It's worth mentioning that the population history of Liberia is complex and intertwined with the country's unique historical and social dynamics. The interplay between the settler and indigenous populations, as well as the impact of conflicts and post-war recovery, have shaped the demographic landscape of Liberia.
