Kyrgyzstan in a week

This video tells the story of the 7-day trip we took through northeast Kyrgyzstan.

When I told my friends that I had planned a trip to Kyrgyzstan, the most common answer was Kyrgyz what?
And I repeated Kyrgyzstan!

Our travel plan was based on the experience of our dear guide and friend, Aman from the company Kyrgyz Riders, who I strongly advise if you want to travel to this country.

Located in Central Asia, Kyrgyzstan is bordered by Kazakhstan to the northwest and north, by China to the east and south, and by Tajikistan and Uzbekistan to the south and west. Most of Kyrgyzstan's borders run along mountain crests. Formerly a constituent republic of the U.S.S.R., Kyrgyzstan declared its independence on August 31, 1991. The capital is Bishkek.

Kyrgyzstan is an amazing, uncommon travel destination. With an incredible display of rivers, waterfalls, and nearly 2,000 lakes, its beautiful mountainous landscape has provided the setting for over 2,000 years of history. We spent 10 days in Kyrgyzstan and explored many of its most famous places.

So our travel plan was to explore the following places in 7 days: Jalgyz-Karagay pass, Song-Kol lake, Tash-Rabat, Chatyr-Kol Lake, Kel-Suu lake, KochKor Village, Eagle Hunting Experience, The Skazka Canyon, Jetty-Oguz red mountains, Karakol village, and Grigorievka gorge.

Avoid this Soviet Exclave!

If you look at a detailed map of Kyrgyzstan in Central Asia you will see some strange shapes appearing in the very south of the country. These are the Soviet formed exclaves belonging to both Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. They were formed in the 1950s to answer the question of what to do with small regions which were ethnically diverse from the Kyrgyz Republic the people had found themselves living in due to Stalin's map making.

These exclaves had always intrigued me and I wondered what life was like in them. However there is zero information online about visiting them. However I am always up for a wasted journey so I hired a car in northern Kyrgyzstan and drove 1000kms to one of these exclaves to see if foreigners were allowed to enter or not.

Join me on a wild adventure towards the mysterious mountain exclave of Shohimardon...

A day in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. August 2023.

I recently visited Samarkand, Uzbekistan during my layover.
The city is known for it’s historic significance in the Silk Road, connecting the East to the West.

Exploring Kyrgyzstan - The Last Soviet Corner in Central Asia

Nestled in the heart of Central Asia lies a hidden gem: Kyrgyzstan. This enchanting country boasts stunning mountain ranges, shimmering alpine lakes, and a rich nomadic culture that spans centuries. But what truly sets Kyrgyzstan apart is its fascinating Soviet past, which is still visible in the many relics and artifacts that dot the landscape. From grandiose Soviet-era monuments to the stark, utilitarian architecture of the city centers, Kyrgyzstan offers a unique window into a bygone era.

Me and my friend Andrew went to Kyrgyzstan for several days to explore local culture and to find hidden soviet gems.

Tashkent, Kazakhstan - Best metro station in Tashkent, Kosmonavtlar metro station - Kazakhstan. Let's go to Central Asia and let's visit the country of Uzbekistan and its beautiful capital city of Tashkent. Here, we are going to visit Kosmonavtlar metro station which is a space-programme-themed station of the Tashkent Metro on Oʻzbekiston Line which was opened on 8 December 1984 partly in honour of cosmonaut Vladimir Dzhanibekov. The architectural decoration of Kosmonavtlar metro station is based on the theme of space. The interior of the Kosmonavtlar metro station is decorated with blue ceramic medallions with images of Ulugbek, Icarus, Valentina Tereshkova, Yuri Gagarin, Vyacheslav Volkov and Vladimir Dzhanibekov. The ceiling resembles the Milky Way, which shone glass stars. Travel wall platform floor-to-ceiling windows throughout the length of the platform is gradually moving from azure to dark blue, recalling the atmosphere of the Earth. Round tower platform covered with glass, and metal, granite and marble-trimmed lobbies stations, lobbies finish is, as the station, on the theme of space exploration.

Yuri Gagarin‘s rocket crashed here? — (Off-Road in Kyrgyzstan)

➤ SUBSCRIBE to follow my adventures:

Way out in the middle of nowhere in Kyrgyzstan...is the fabled landing site of the world‘s first manned orbit mission! @NomadShubham and I have been driving a LandCruiser around Kyrgyzstan, and this was one place that I had to stop at!

Yuri Gagarin (of the USSR/Russia) launched off from neighboring Kazakhstan, and the local legend is that he landed here, on the southern shores of Lake Issyk Kul. And people believed it for a long time, considering how blurred the official Soviet story was. The local Kyrgyz people are very proud of this site!

I know it‘s kind of a long video, but Yuri‘s story is a fascinating one! And one that everybody should know. After all… he was the FIRST HUMAN TO PUSH INTO SPACE! Imagine being him, and going around the world completely in just 81 minutes? Seeing the sunset and sunrise within like 40 minutes of each other!

Tashkent

Crossing the Dustlyk border near Osh comes Andijan in Uzbekistan. After five hours of shared taxi, Tashkent was in sight. Tashkent is distinctively Soviet, and a very metropolitan city.Tashkent is an interesting metropolitan city, a prime example of Soviet architectures.  The metro in Tashkent was a welcoming change. Each station has a theme; the Cosmanovtlar station has a cosmic theme and of course, with Russian’s pride Gagarin; Alisher Navoi station is designed after the Uzbek national poet Alisher Navoi. Photography was however banned in the stations as they were designed as nuclear shelter. Chorsu bazaar is also home to good and cheap Uzbek pilaf accompanied by great Shahslik, but the prime photographic interest here is the domed bazaar.

Most BEAUTIFUL place in the world — (must visit)

➤ SUBSCRIBE to follow my adventures:

I had just left Karakol, Kyrgyzstan. My LandCruiser had a chip in the windshield from the rough roads on the south side of Lake Issyk Kul. Coming upon the village of Barskoon, I couldn’t help but gaze at the sunset scene. Pulled the car off the road, and drove down along the sandy shore...to be greeted by this view. Towering mountains of the Tian Shan / Himalayas, brilliant blue salt waters, and soaring water between the mountain range.

This is Kyrgyzstan.

If you visit, this place is a must-go! I keep a very short list of about 10 places I’ve ever been that are my “special places.” This one definitely makes it onto that list
