Is Gabrovo the Funniest City in the World? Bulgaria Road Trip Series (Part 4)

Gabrovo, Bulgaria is the home of the Museum of Humor and Satire. And since Stevo is a comedian, we knew we had to check out this mountain city. We were happy to find a major city straddling the Yantra river in the Bulgarian countryside full of parks and statues.

We only had a short time in Gabrovo and would have loved to spend more time there. But the time we did have there was well spent. This is definitely a part of the world we’d like to visit again.

The Museum of Humor and Satire is one of the most unique museums we’ve ever been to. We don’t want to spoil anything, so if you ever have the chance to visit Gabrovo, you must check out the Museum of Humor and Satire. Or am I joking? Watch the video and find out!

This is Part 4 of our Bulgaria Road Trip series. Check out the rest below:
Part 1: Renting a car in Bulgaria

Part 2: Veliko Tarnovo

Part 3: Tryavna

Part 4: Gabrovo: The funniest city in the world?

Amazing Historic Tryavna, Bulgaria: Bulgarian Road Trip Series Part 3

Tryavna is a quaint little village with churches, bell towers, and old bridges. It was nice to see a Bulgarian small town and feel the different pace of life and marvel at how well the city has preserved the old ways of life.

We probably would have never gone to Tryavna had we not rented a car. Seeing more of this beautiful country has been worth the Thunderdome experience that is driving in Bulgaria.

Gabrovo Bulgaria Travel Vlog | The Capital of Humour & Satire?

Hey You!

Gabrovo, wow, where to begin?
I was invited to Gabrovo by a teacher of mine, who gave me the opportunity to get some hands on medical experience, but once the study day was over, it was time to explore a new place.

Gabrovo is a crazy little city, that is 25km long and only 1km wide in some places, is that not crazy? I hope you enjoy exploring as much as I do and I hope you take the time out to travel to a new place this weekend!

One of the best places to visit in Bulgaria is the open air ethnographic museum, Etar (or Etara) near Gabrovo Bulgaria! We stopped in along our Bulgarian road trip to see some local ethnography. Near the center of Bulgaria, Etara displays traditional crafts of the Bulgarian people in action amid very beautiful nature! We also touch on where to stay in Gabrovo and show one of the yummiest breads in the world, another taste of Bulgaria, as we continue to travel in Bulgaria! And, as we always do in each country we are visiting, we answer to the question, is Bulgaria cheap?

Gabrovo, town, north-central Bulgaria. It is situated on both banks of the Yantra River, at the foot of the Shipka Pass in the Balkan Mountains. A major industrial centre, Gabrovo has a high in-migration population from the surrounding area. Called the “Bulgarian Manchester,” the town has a large textile industry—clothes, leather goods, and accessories. Other manufactures are machine tools, footwear, electrical machinery, and textile machinery.
According to legend, the town was founded in the mid-15th century by an itinerant blacksmith, who was later joined by other craftsmen. In 1835 the first Bulgarian secular school opened there, and in 1877 the town was liberated from the Turks. In the mountains to the south, craft industries are maintained in textiles, woodworking, and carpet making.

Top Things To Do and See in Veliko Turnovo, Bulgaria - Travel Bulgaria

Top Things To Do and See in Veliko Turnovo, Bulgaria - Travel Bulgaria

Veliko Turnovo - Unique Holiday Experience in Bulgaria

Veliko Turnovo is situated in central Bulgaria, at the foothills of the Balkan Mountains. It is spread over the historical hills of Tsarevets, Trapezitsa and Sveta Gora, towering over the wide curves of the Iantra river. The city is more than 7000 years old. Veliko Tarnovo impresses with its original renaissance architecture - antique houses, situated one above another, towers, splendid museums, and monasteries with icon-paintings that attract tourists from all over the world. Capital of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom, Turnovo offers some of the most abundant and important cultural and historic attractions in Bulgaria. It also offers lively modern night life and nature with great opportunities for sports and rest.

Veliko Tarnovo has a rich historical past. The first clues for life date back to the 3rd millennium b.c. The first inhabitants were the Thracians and their settlement existed until the end of the Bronze Age. The next inhabitants were the Byzantines. A big Slav settlement was situated here during the VIII a.c. The Old-Bulgarian settlement appeared during the IX c. and during the X c. the hills Tsarevets, Trapezitsa and Sveta Gora were already richly populated. The brothers Asen and Peter organized successfully a revolt against Byzantine rule in 1187 and declared Veliko Tarnovo the capital of Bulgaria. Turnovo became a well-fortified city and a significant political, administrative, economic and cultural center in Europe during the next 200 years. The contemporaries referred to it as the The Second Constantinople and The Third Rome.

The most important remnant of these times is the archaeological preserve Tsarevets, a restored fortress that surrounds the hill Tsarvets. One of the main attractions of the fortress is the Baldwin towers where the Latin Emperor Baldwin was captured and locked during the crusade in the early 1200's. The palace of the Bulgarian tsars was a self-contained fortress with the fabulous Throne Hall and the palace church St. Petka. The Bulgarian patriarchate was situated on the highest place within the fortress. In recent years, the fortress has received further acclaim with a Lights and Sound show - a program that combines sound and light effects to reproduce the history of the old Bulgarian capital.

Venturing beyond the fortress walls, one enters a historical preserved neighborhood with winding narrow cobblestones lined with craft shops, cafes, restaurants and boutique hotels. One can admire the numerous fully renovated Renaissance houses in a typical Bulgarian style, interspersed with ancient ruins and churches. The Gurko street and the ethnographic complex Samovodska Charshia reveal a great variety of Renaissance houses that seem to have landed on top of each other, with sheer views over the Iantra river. The Sarafkina house, built in 1861, is a particularly beautiful sample.

There is much to do around Veliko Turnovo as well including fourteen monasteries built during the Second Bulgarian Kingdom in XII - XIV c. Many of them were destroyed during the Ottoman rule and were renovated by the self-educated Bulgarian architect and builder Kolio Ficheto and wall-painted by Zohari Zograf during XIX c. One of the largest is the Preobrajenski monastery that was founded at the time of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom during XIII - XIV c. by queen Sara, wife of Tsar Ivan Alexander. It had an important role for the spiritual life of the capital. It is situated 6km from Veliko Tarnovo in a beautiful area with vertical rocks in the canyon-like gorge of the Iantra River.

Turnovo has much to offer for people interested in history and architecture but it is also a very vibrant, energetic town with long pedestrian areas, restaurants, shops, and cafes. It is a favorite destination for Bulgarians of all ages and interests as well as international tourists.

Curious? You can look through the following listing of hotels and B&B's: [ Turnovo Holidays. You will not be disappointed.

Stefan Valev writes regular columns about holiday destinations in Bulgaria.

Sokolski Monastery, Gabrovo - Bulgaria ????????

The Sokolski Monastery is a Bulgarian Orthodox monastery founded in 1833 and named after its founder Yosif Sokolski. It is located 15 km southwest of Gabrovo on the northern slopes of the Balkan Mountains in the Bulgarka Nature Park and is close to the Sokolovo cave.
The yard with the fountain
Originally, a small wooden church was built in 1833 and the frescoes were finished a year later. Hristo Tsokev, a Gabrovo-born artist, donated the church icon, which represents the Virgin Mary and Christ and is considered to be miraculous. In 1862, Father Paul Zograf and his son Nikola from the village of Shipka decorated the church with frescoes.
