This CARTAGENA Day Trip Will Change How You See COLOMBIA ???????? Palenque

Cartagena Colombia is beautiful, but this day trip to Palenque the first free town in the Americas for Afro Colombians will change how you see things in Colombia.
San Basilio de Palenque is known to locals as Palenque or Palenge.

Just outside Cartagena is the first ‘free town’ in the Americas. Started by Benkos Biohó who helped Afro Colonbians flee slavery and recapture in Spanish colonial times. This Colombian city has been preserved and is famous for its music, culture, food and a language that is being preserved, which is a unique mix of African as its roots are in slavery combined with French Spanish and Portuguese - the languages of those that enslaved them.

Many tourists in Cartagena have no idea the story of the colourfully dressed women, the Palenqueras, who sell fruit in woven baskets on their head while others sell Colombian sweets like cocadas, caballitos, cheese and pan de coco.

If you want to know more about coastal Colombia and why it's so special this Cartagena tour changed my mind about how we talk about Colombia's history.

The REAL CARTAGENA Colombia ???????? Afro Colombian history, Bazurto Market + La Maria

The best thing I did in Colombia over 5 weeks. Uncovering the Hidden Gems of Cartagena - Colombia's Food Scene at the famous Sunday Bazurto Market and Afro Colombian history with Benkos Biohó, the high school Shakira built for under privileged kids and the neighbourhood above La Maria where the city would like to get rid of squatters to build luxury accommodation.

I discovered all of this with Deimer Puerta Marquez who runs a tour agency called Cheap and Safe Cartagena, these tours fun a bigger program called Fundacion HIT a nonprofit organization located in Cartagena, Colombia.

They are dedicated to helping children of extremely low resources acquire important values, life skills, and build teamwork through Nutritional, Educational, Sport, cultural programmes.

Colombia ???????? Food and Travel Guide | Bogota | Salento | Pereira 2021 Vlog [4K]

Colombian cuisine is a compound of the culinary traditions of the six main regions within the country (Pacific, Amazonian, Andean, Orinoco, Caribbean, and Insular). Colombian cuisine varies regionally and is particularly influenced by Indigenous Colombian, Spanish, and African cuisines, with slight Arab influence in some regions. Furthermore, being one of the most diverse countries in the world, Colombia has one of the widest variety of available ingredients depending on the region from fish to meat.

Because the region of Quindio is known for its trout fisheries, Trucha or trout is a favorite of the Colombian people. Trout is very versatile and can be prepared by grilling, broiling, frying or baking.

I sampled lots of great food during my solo trip in Colombia, and here's some of it! From Salento to Bogota. Let's eat!

1. Arepa
The Arepa is a pastry that is made from maize flour or corn meal.

2. Assorted Colombian Bakery

3. Empanadas
Colombian empanadas boast an outer crust made with masarepa, which is Colombian precooked cornmeal.

4. Picada
The appetizing dish is a combination of meat, yucca, plantains and potatoes and anything else we want or have at hand. The delicious taste of papas criollas (Colombian yellow potatoes) takes center stage in the picada. Just imagine how deliciously they compliment chorizo or ribs.

5. Pollo en salsa de champiñones
Grilled chicken with mushroom sauce.

6. Trucha en salsa de champiñones
Trout in mushroom sauce.

7. Caldo de costilla
Caldo de costilla is a dish typical of Colombian cuisine, from the Andean region. It is made mainly from beef ribs boiled in water with slices of potato, some garlic, onion and cilantro leaves. The caldo de costilla is eaten mainly during breakfast, and it eaten often with arepa, chocolate and bread.

8. Pescado al ajillo
Trout with garlic sauce, pescado al ajillo is a popular dish on the Atlantic Coast of Colombia.

9. Yuka
Fried yuca or yuca fries is a dish that is very well known in many Latin American countries, Colombia being one of them. It is often served as an appetizer with lime wedges and any kind of dipping sauce such as pink sauce, garlic mayo or guacamole.

10. Tabla Mixta
All sorts of grilled meats come with rice, beans, salad, cassava, plantains and fries.

11. Bagre en salsa
Catfish in sweet and sour tomatoes sauce.

12. Bandeja paisa
Bandeja Paisa is regarded as the national dish of Colombia. This hearty dish includes red beans, white rice, chicharrón, carne en polvo, chorizo, fried egg, ripe plantain, avocado and arepa.

13Cabro Santandereano. Paella
Paella is a rice dish originally from Valencia. For this reason, many non-Spaniards view it as Spain's national dish. I found an authentic Paella restaurant in Salento, in which the chef and restaurant owners hailed from Madrid, Spain.

Some of the recommended Colombian dishes that are excluded in the video:

1) Changua
Changua is a popular Colombian breakfast soup with broth made from milk and poached eggs. Cilantro and chopped green onion flavor, this broth, while toasting bread is served on top to give this soup a unique look and texture.

2) Roscón
A ring pastry that topped with raw sugar and filled with guava paste. Roscón is very light and airy and when paired with fresh coconut ice cream it is a great finish to any good meal.

3) Colombian Ceviche
Served cold, this dish contains fresh fish such as red snapper, octopus or shrimp. When marinated in lime juice the seafood cooks by acidity and becomes very flavorful.

4) Cabro Santandereano
Marinated goat meat that has been marinated until tender, and then grilled to a smoky finish.

5) Maracuya
Maracuya is a rich source of Vitamin C and believed to aid in digestion.

6) Sancocho de Pescado con Coco
This coconut and fish stew usually includes chunks of local fish such as Spanish mackerel or snapper.

7) Sancocho
Colombian chicken soup includes large pieces of chicken and cob corn as well as chunks of yucca and plantains.

8) Ajiaco
Ajiaco is a hearty stew containing corn, chicken and three different types of potatoes, with one being the purple skinned Andean potato that is only grown in that region of the world. The chicken in Ajiaco is most often large pieces severed still on the bone and the corn included in this dish is served on the cob as well.

9) Pechuga a la plancha
Chicken breasts cooked on a flat-top grill or griddle.

THE BIRDERS | A Melodic Journey through Northern Colombia

The Birders, a documentary film on Colombian bird diversity and birdwatching presented by ProColombia, with support of FONTUR and directed by Gregg Bleakney.

The film highlights Colombian local birdwatching guide, Diego Calderon-Franco and National Geographic photographer / videographer Keith Ladzinski as they travel through one of the most diverse bird regions in the world to capture new and rare birds that have never been filmed before.

The Birders, also takes people through the Colombian landscape, highlighting several of its’ top locations, culture, birds and music. As well as; Los Flamencos Fauna and Flora Sanctuary, in the Guajira Peninsula. El Dorado Bird Reserve, in the Santa Marta Mountains. Minca and surroundings, in the Santa Marta Mountains. Tayrona National Natural Park and El Chamicero del Perija Bird Reserve, in the Perija Mountains.

The films aims to change the perception of Colombia through showcasing the diversity of birds who live there.

“Birdwatching in Colombia is a real adventure. These guides and biologists are always finding new things”, says director Gregg Bleakney. Diego Calderón agrees, “Being a bird guide in Colombia is absolutely crazy, we are basically living the Victorian times of exploration.

You can choose a remote corner of the country and almost for sure you are going to find surprises: new species, new subspecies, new range extensions. Colombia is a box of surprises!”

Along with the unique birds and exquisite landscape, The Birders incorporates an original score from local musicians inspired by the bird songs found in the film.

Mucho Indio - Teto Ocampo

Teto Ocampo has spent the past 10 years learning to play the Arhuaco people’s ancestral songs. Though his band, Mucho Indio, Teto takes listeners on a cosmic journey through space and time by translating Colombia’s most ancestral melody, the song of the hummingbird, to a modern format. He composed the melody with a rare charu flute, an instrument that only a handful of people on planet have the knowledge to play.

Song name: Kumuchikayu

Sidestepper English musician Richard Blair is most well known as the founding member of Sidestepper, a pioneering Colombian band that has paved the way for a modern generation of Colombian artists who have successfully gone global through mixing local and foreign musical concepts.

Richard’s meditative song was inspired by “mixed migrant flocks, a phenomenon where foreign birds migrate to Colombia’s Caribbean region to live, travel and sing with local groups of birds.

Song name: To Close Your Eyes

Ghetto Kumbé Together with the team of the documentary, Edgardo Garcés travelled to his birthplace of La Guajira to record the song of the Vermilion Cardinal. Edgardo tattooed the bird on his arm to ground himself after the death of his parents. He had never seen the bird in the wild before. The story of this eye-catching bird’s connection to indigenous Wayúu culture is the inspiration for this modern Afro-Colombian electronic song.

Song name: Soy Guajira

Frente Cumbiero Using Colombian Cumbia as its base, Mario Galeano and his band Frente Cumbiero composed a modern take on the classic USA surf songs of the 1960s, but with a birder’s soul. The song draws inspiration from the endemic Santa Marta Parakeet. These social birds
live in flocks on a massive ridgeline overlooking the Caribbean Sea and Magdalena River Valley, the birthplace of Cumbia music.

Song name: Parakeet Ridge

El Leopardo With his band El Leopardo, Daniel Broderick (aka Dani Boom) composed a thumping electronic club song that mirrors the Manakin bird’s slow build-up to a frenetic courtship display. The mechanical clapping sound of the White-bearded Manakin’s wings, recorded by the documentary team in Tayrona National Park, is the foundation of Dani’s composition. The courtship call of the Lance-tailed Manakin provided a secondary melody.

Song name: Manakin Boom

Tabio is a small town near the capital city of Bogotá Colombia. Tabio is part of the Metropolitan Area of Bogotá and borders other towns like Chía, Tenjo, Cota, Cajica, and Subachoque. Colombia is a country in South America which has many cities and towns, and today we are focusing on a town called Tabio Cundinamarca. Welcome to Colombia

Santa Marta is the oldest city in Colombia and the second most important city on the Caribbean coast. A coastal city surrounded by mountains, due to its proximity to the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta ( It is a beautiful city and full of history.
Although today it is a highly visited city by Colombians, tourism in the region has not developed its full potential. I invite you to know Santa Marta ( it is a destination that you have to visit when you come to Colombia.
The treasure of Santa Marta is not in the city itself, in its surroundings are the main tourist sites of Santa Marta. The little angel of Colombia

If an angel were to appear on Earth, what form would it take? In South America, it might be that of a small boy living in the shantytown of Ciudad del Norte in Bucara-manga, Colombia. In 1988, at the age of 9, Alveiro Vargas organized squads of children to spend their free time helping shut-ins who had been abandoned by their families. The children brought them food, bathed them, cleaned their hovels, solicited donations from local businesses and arranged for rent to be forgiven. Fast forward 10 years. It is 1998, and Alveiro is a 20-year-old young man. He is now director of a clean, modern care facility for 140 poor elderly people who would otherwise be homeless. The facility is a monument to the potential we all possess when we follow our heart. -
