Best Way to Road Trip the Four Corners States & Grand Circle

I've done more than 20 cross-country road trips and this specific road trip route numerous times. In this video is information on the best way to do a road trip through the Four Corners states and the Grand Circle. This is the best outdoors-oriented road trip in the U.S. and there are a lot of ways to do it. I've picked up some good ideas and recommendations on how to best use the limited time you may have on a road trip. In this video are highlights of this route, best spots to camp and hike and places that are okay to miss.

A Walk Around 4 Corners Monument (AZ, UT, CO, NM)

The Four Corners Monument marks the quadripoint in the Southwestern United States where the states of Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah meet. It is the only point in the United States shared by four states, leading to the area being named the Four Corners region. The monument also marks the boundary between two semi-autonomous Native American governments, the Navajo Nation, which maintains the monument as a tourist attraction, and the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe Reservation.

The origins of the state boundaries marked by the monument occurred just prior to, and during, the American Civil War, when the United States Congress acted to form governments in the area to combat the spread of slavery to the region. When the early territories were formed, their boundaries were designated along meridian and parallel lines. Beginning in the 1860s, these lines were surveyed and marked. These early surveys included some errors, but even so, the markers placed became the legal boundaries, superseding the written descriptions of geographical meridians and parallels. This includes the Four Corners Monument, which has been legally established as the corner of the four states.

23k yr old foot prints and 13 more Native American Ruin Sites in New Mexico and the 4 Corners.

Another in depth travel and information guide. In this one we trace the progress of the first Native Americans starting 23,000 years ago with Human Foot Prints next to Mastodons! We then see early pit houses and 21,000 rock carvings. We visit a lava field where tools could be made before heading to Chaco Canyon- center of power from 800-1250, and its magnificent multi-story stone buildings with up to 600 rooms. We'll learn why they were made based on PhD Steve Lekson's research-- hint they are palaces! After Chaco's decline the site in Aztec New Mexico became the power center. There we enter their superbly reconstructed great Kiva- the best in the southwest!

Then we see the cliff dwellings of Mesa Verde National Park and Bandelier which were occupied till about 1300.
Then, we go to Acama Pueblo which is the oldest continually occupied settlement in the US. I meet a native wearing his prized Washington Redskins cap. In the Four Corners we visit Hovenweep in Utah- to see the finest stone work of the age. Then, we head south to Arizona and Canyon de Chelly for hike to Whitehouse Ruin. Around 1300 many 4 Corner sites were abandoned.
Perhaps its not a coincidence the population near the Rio Grande grew. Near Albuquerque, we explore an adobe settlement visited, and possibly sacked, by Coronado in 1540. In 1621 the Spanish forced the Pueblo people to build a church at Jemez- its still in fine shape. The Spanish began an unhappy chapter, but things got worse after 1848 when the area was ceded to the USA. in 1851 the US built a Fort along an old trade route called the Santa Fe Trail. It seems a fitting place to end our Road trip.

Four Corners National Monument - Middle of Navajo Nation

This was a beautiful drive out here. It really is in the middle of nowhere, with the closest gas station being like 30 minutes away. Cool lil place tho, and to walk around and read everything about the area was pretty awesome also. It's cool to see if you happen to be in the area, but to go out of your way to come here... I wouldn't suggest it as there are tons of other things to see in the area.

Drive to Four Corners Monument, be in 4 States

The only place in the United States where four states meet at one geographic location, Utah, Colorado, Arizona and New Mexico. Stand on the monument and you could be in 4 states at once.

America’s Favorite Border Novelty | Four Corners Monument

State borders are a fairly frequent sighting along long distance road trips, and should act as celebratory milestones in which any dedicated cross-country traveler may delight themself to have accomplished another leg of the American journey. Though most divide the land into two, there are indeed areas split into thirds by the map. What? Three states aren't enough to satiate your appetite? Then I welcome you to the greatest, most appreciated feature of political geography in the country. The famous Four Corners epitomizes the humorously American concept that anything, even a simple cartographic crosshair located in the desert's empty and unforgiving wilderness, can become a favorite attraction among families and tourists, receiving the same eagerness for checking this item off the bucket list as any other national park or renowned landmark. We may know how a map would portray this point. However the real world is not a map, rather a tangible realm of earthen character full of sediment particles and man-made constructions. What actually exists here at the point where four southwestern states perfectly meet up, that marker which has long fascinated everyday enthusiasts of the American landmass?

Four Corners National Monument | 4 States Meet (Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, and Colorado)

Right hand in Arizona, left hand in New Mexico, right foot in Utah, and left foot in Colorado. The Four Corners National Monument is the only point in the U.S. where four States meet -- Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, and Colorado. The monument was established and perpetuated by the U.S. Government Surveyors and Astronomers beginning in 1868.
