The Most Famous FISH MARKET in GHANA!! Eating Waakye + Elmina Castle Tour | Elmina, Ghana

As my road trip through the West African nation of Ghana continued, I set out to explore Elmina, the largest fishing town in Ghana. Come with me as I visit the most famous fish market in Ghana, eat some waakye, and explore Elmina Castle!
Elmina is also the first European settlement in Ghana and dates back to 1482, when the Portuguese built Elmina Castle. My morning began as Isaac (my guide from Jolinaiko Eco Tours) and I set out to walk through the town.
We crossed the Old Bridge and got a great view looking over the lagoon and all the fishing boats, fishermen, and the market along it.
From the bridge, we could also see a Dutch fort in the distance. I headed down to the market, which was sensory overload. I saw people making banku, which smelled amazing.
There, I met up with Michael from Torchlight Tours. He’s a local who would be showing me around. Most of the activity we saw was the fishmongers selling fish. The fishermen go out overnight and bring back the fish they catch. As we watched, they were preparing for heading out the next day.
They don’t fish on Tuesdays, so this area is a lot quieter then. It’s considered taboo to fish on that day. They sell the fish fresh, but they also salt and preserve some of them. There were tons of different species of fish, as well as shrimp, squid, and even shark!
I personally advise exploring this market with a guide, and being extremely respectful if you come with a camera.
From the market area, we visited the carpentry part of the market where they build the fishing boats. There were also fishermen fixing their nets and removing the scales from the fish they had caught.
Next, we visited the area where the fishmongers smoke and preserve the fish. There, the women smoke them by putting the fish on screens, and stacking the screens in layers over the fire.
I tried a smoked fish. I had to remove the bones, but it was salty and full of flavor. It’s an authentic look at life here in Ghana!
From there, Michael and I continued through the chaotic streets to a coconut vendor. I drank the water and then the vendor cut it up so I could eat the meat! The meat inside was so fresh and filling!
Then, we headed back to the bridge. The activity in the market had died down since it was around 10 a.m. So we headed off to get some waakye (rice with beans), pasta, fish stew, casava flour, and a spicy shito, and eat in a back area in front of a church from 1900.
The dish cam with a very spicy sauce but it was so tasty. I loved the mix of the crunchy casava flour, the dry noodles, and the smooth paste of the shito. The meat of the fish stew added a meaty texture. It only cost 6 cedi ($1.20 USD) each.
Waakye is my favorite dish in Ghana. The fish is so fresh, and the shito was incredible.
After breakfast, we headed back across the Old Bridge and passed through a min9 arket where they sell clothes and shoes. Then, we arrived at Elmina Castle, which looked very similar to Cape Coast Castle.
On the outside are defensive walls and a moat. It’s also known as St. George’s Castle. It was built by the Portuguese in 1482 after their arrival in 1471, but was taken over by the Dutch in 1637. It’s 539 years old and the oldest castle in West Africa.
The city got its name from the huge supply of gold the Portuguese got from the area. They called it “the mine,” or “El Mina.” The storerooms on the ground floor were later converted into dungeons to hold enslaved Africans.
Then, we visited the officer quarters, where you have views over the ocean and the entire town. You can also see the cannons on the ramparts, the fishing market, and the ocean.

The Twifo Atti Morkwa District (formerly Twifo Heman Lower Denkyira) with its capital Twifo Praso is one of the 261 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in Ghana and forms part of the 22 MMDAs in the Central Region.
It has a total land area of 1199km2 and it is located between latitudes 5’50’N and 5’51’ N and longitudes 1’50W and 1’10’W.
Twifo Atti Morkwa District was carved from Denkyira District Council in 1988 by LI 1377 with the name Twifo Hemang Lower Denkyira District. In 2012, government split the Twifo Hemang Lower Denkyira District into two districts namely; Twifo Atti Morkwa District and Twifo Hemang Lower Denkyira District under the Local Government Act 462 of 1992 by LI 2023.
Twifo Atti Morkwa District is bounded on the north by the Upper Denkyira East Municipal on the south by the Abura Asebu Kwamankese District, Cape Coast Metropolitan and Komenda Edina Eguafo Abirem Municipal, on the west by the Mpohor District and the east by the Assin Foso Municipal and Assin South District respectively.

From Pizzaman on the Mango road and after passing infront of the Animal Husbandry and Akokono house, we branched right onto the Opoku Transport road along the KNUST Botanical gardens till we drove to the KNUST primary road.
We exited the KNUST primary road towards the KNUST police station to Ayigya after crossing the N6 Kumasi Accra road onto the Dr AA Amofa avenue bypassing the Calvary Charismatic church onto the Ayigya Asokore Mampong road. Places passed include Royal Foam Mattres factory, the CBS building and the Brilliant International school,
The Academy Clinic, The Asokore Mampong Rural Bank and the St.Xavier Roman Catholic church are along the Boakye Asaamu Avenue.
Continuing on Asokore Mampong Sepe Road, we passed by the Asokore Mampong Police station, the Kumasi Academy Senior High school, the Asokore Mampong Primary and JHS before ending the journey at Sepe Tinpom.

Sunyani Regional Hospital is in Nkwabeng North off the Sunyani Techiman road whilst the Sunyani Municipal Hospital is in Area 1 on the Litte Wood Avenue.
From the, we drove and passed the Sand and stone seller Trucks, Penkwase traffic light, the Goil Gas station at Nkwabeng, Presby church, Sunyani Municipal Police station to the Sunyani Municpal Hospital where we ended the journey.

Breman Asikuma Senior High School (BASS) is a secondary educational institution in Ghana and operates as a non-denominational day and boarding school, located at Breman Asikuma in the Central Region. It was the first high school in Asikuma/Odoben/Brakwa District.
The school runs courses in general science, business, general art, agricultural science, and home economics driving to the grant of a West African Senior School Certificate.
The programs the school runs include general science, agricultural, business, general art, and visual arts. Final year junior high school applicants choose four elective courses as part of their computerized school selection and placement system registration. Core courses, unlike elective courses, are available to all students, regardless of their program of study.
English language, core mathematics, social studies, integrated science, ICT (core), and physical education are the core courses; nevertheless, students are only assessed internally and externally in the first five aforementioned courses.
Academic performance
Breman Asikuma Senior High School maintains a high academic performance and has been recognized among Ghana's top senior high schools. It one of four schools in the Asikuma Odoben Brakwa district which had produce 60% or more of their students qualify for tertiary education. In 2015, the school made it first appearance to Ghana National Science and Maths Quiz and qualified to the one-eight stage among 135 schools.

Tras su independencia de Reino Unido en 1948, el país fue gobernado por una dictadura militar desde 1988 hasta 2011 en el 2020, volvió el golpe de estado y la dictadura militar. Es paradójico, pero un país eternamente budista y espiritual, lleva casi toda su vida batallando por su libertad; el poder y la espiritualidad no son compatibles, y esto ha hecho que el poder militar lleve décadas guerreando contra su propia población para poder dominarla. Por eso hay tantos cambios constantes; Birmania se paso a llamar Myanmar, la capital Mandalay paso a ser Yangon que antes se llamaba Rangun, y ahora en estos precisos momentos, justo unos meses después de que yo visitara el país, un golpe de estado tiene a la población aislada del mundo bajo el yugo de la imposición y el miedo. Una vez mas, la anhelada democracia de un pueblo budista, se ha visto cercenada por el ruido de los fusiles y los encarcelamientos marciales. Birmania vuelve a llorar.
Por suerte, los monumentos han perdurado y sobrevivido a todos los avatares del pais, y espero que sigan asi por muchos milenios.
La Pagoda Kuthodaw literalmente Merito Real , es una estupa budista , ubicada en Mandalay , Birmania (Myanmar), que contiene el libro más grande del mundo . Se encuentra al pie de Mandalay Hill y fue construido durante el reinado del rey Mindon . La estupa en sí, que está dorada sobre sus terrazas, tiene 57 m de altura y sigue el modelo de la Pagoda Shwezigon en Nyaung-U cerca de Bagan, (tenéis un video de esta fantastica pagoda aquí en este canal). En el recinto de la pagoda son 729 piedras escritas, que contienen cada una losa de mármol inscrito en ambos lados con una página de texto de la Tripitaka; todo el Canon Pali del budismo Theravada, que es para que lo entendáis como la biblia de los cristianos.
Mindon Min hizo construir la pagoda como parte de los cimientos tradicionales de la nueva ciudad real de Mandalay en 1857. Más tarde convocaría el Quinto Sínodo Budista en 1871, pero quería dejar una gran obra de mérito al tener el Tipitaka grabado en piedra. para la posteridad, destinado a durar cinco milenios después del Buda . La construcción comenzó en 1860, su hti (paraguas o corona) se montó el 19 de julio de 1862, y las inscripciones se abrieron al público el 4 de mayo de 1868. Se dispusieron en ordenadas filas dentro de tres recintos, 42 en el primero, 168 en el medio y 519 en el tercero. Uno más se encuentra en la esquina sureste del primer recinto, lo que lo convierte en 730, y esta piedra registra cómo surgió todo.
La pagoda se encuentra en el centro del recinto, rodeada de todas las losas con el tripitaka, si la caminais, recordad de hacerlo siempre empezando por la izquierda y en el sentido de las agujas del reloj. En el camino, os encontrareis pequeñas pagodas con diferentes estatuas alegóricas al buda de esta epoca el buda Sakyamuni y otras estructuras. El hecho de que la mayoría del recinto este pintado de blanco hace que la calor ya de por si asfixiante en Myanmar, aquí sea todavía mayor, así que ir preparados con bebida y ropa adecuada al respeto del lugar y la calor de la zona.
Caminar en silencio por aquí al atardecer te ofrece la oportunidad de meditar caminando mientras el ruido de los pajaros y las campanas te acompañan en ese estado de paz interior que solo este tipo de edificaciones te ofrece. Del resto se encargara la simpatia del burnes siempre sonriendo y esperando que le preguntes algo para que te explique orgulloso cualquier detalle de su cultura y tradicion.
