Part 1: Fort Leonard Wood BCT Ed Tour

Welcome Burly Teacher Friends,

Hello there folks. This is part one in a series of videos I will make with my time in St. Robert, Missouri at Fort Leonard Wood. It is one of 5 places where young recruits complete BCT (Basic Combat Training). It was mostly a day of travel but I wanted to make sure to give everyone the whole experience. I am grateful for the experience to be apart of this trip and I look forward to sharing what I found with my colleagues and students.

US Army Basic Training Fort Leonard Wood - 1986

Fun and nostalgic look at what basic was like before the cold war ended. One of those half canned, half original tapes that video companies use to make and sell to graduating soldiers. This was basic training class D-3-3. It was a mix of engineer, infantry, aviation, and MP MOSs. Started May of 1986.

This is my 3rd Top-10 Smallest Towns video (previously did Kansas and Oklahoma). It's hard to believe Missouri's smallest towns are smaller than KS and OK, but it's true! And to be honest, they have some of the most unique stories as well. As you'll find in the video, 3 of them have ZERO people left but are still towns, so I added a few bonus towns. They range from the normal ghost town type stories to towns where just one family lives there to towns that have virtually no information at all available. Even though it was all over the state and confusing at times, I still had a blast exploring them! I hope you enjoy this video as much as I did making it!

Part 2: Fort Leonard Wood

Welcome Burly Teacher Friends,

Hello everyone. Day 2 was the day where we actually got to get into the base and visit some very cool things. The day started out in one of the main headquarters (I am guessing) we were briefing on some of the history and information on Fort Leonard Wood as a whole. Also were told about the three MOS specialities they have on the base: Military Police, Chemical Engineers, and Prime Power School Engineers. Altogether there are 26 MOs's in the base.

We started out at the receiving, which is day 0-3.5. They get all their equipment and indoctrinations such as eye care, dental care, hair cuts, and all the clothes, boots, etc. It was a very interesting place seeing all the levels of oh shit what did I just do. Some laughing to hide being scared, some hands in head (WTF did I do), and some seemingly well adjusted.

The second place we got to do was to the Prime Power School and learn about how they use generators to create power. The school is very heavy in math and science and by the end of the course run a power plant producing crazy amounts of kilowatts.
We got to eat with the recruits at lunch which was cool to have them scare their stories. Our group had already finished OSUT (One Station Unit Training) meaning they completed BCT and AIT at the same base. So all around it was 19 weeks of training with the same Drill Sgt.
Lastly we got to see the virtual training simulators and practice with the game VBS-3. It was a full scale training simulator that saves the Army tons of money so they don't have to waste ammo and gas.
And lastly we got to see the Military Police - CID (Criminal Investigations) unit where they training them to deal with murder, rape, and sexual harassment.

Overall it was a good day and at the end it was very evident that education is the key to the US Army's success. They stressed that teachers are the first line of defense. I never really thought of our role in that way, but it does help forge a new perspective.

Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, Family Day & Graduation Day 4 /19 & 20 /2023

I Don't Own The Rights to these songs. I use music that I enjoy to
make watching my pictures of places I have been more Pleasurable
If somebody comes across one of my postings and enjoys it. BONUS!
I don't put the pictures in a special order, mostly they are still
in the order I took them in. I'm not trying to make the best slideshows

Navy Retirement Camping at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri | In the Bush #104

I finally got my Mom to go camping! Join us as we luxury camp near Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri and I perform the national anthem at my cousins retirement ceremony.

I was in Boy Scouts growing up, but after I turned 18 adulting' took over and I rarely did any of those activities. After seeing the way the world was going I decided I needed to brush up on my self-reliance and outdoor skills. So in January of 2021 I began hiking out into my woods, building fires, shelters, cooking, and doing other bush activities. I decided for my own benefit I would film and catalog these trips, and track my progress along the way. You are watching me learn in real time.

In this video series you will see me learning survival skills and enjoying nature in various forms including; bushcrafting, fire making, campfire cooking, fishing, hunting, and foraging. In many videos you will be invited along for the journey as I camp in every possible environment from under the stars, to bushcraft shelters, to tent camping and even some vanping in my van and luxury camping in campers.

In the fall of 2021 I built a small cabin in one of my favorite locations. Many of the videos take place there as well.

Big thank you to Brandon Cooper Wilson for the In the Bush graphic

The Route 66 Diner, St. Robert, MO

I interview the owner of the Route 66 Diner about a little history and get a feel for the restaurant.

Some of the background noise can be intrusive. I suggest you turn on closed captioning.

The Route 66 Diner will take you back in time. The stainless steel diner has a 50's look. The music is from the 60's. And the food, like chicken fried steak, will take you back to your childhood.

It is not far from Route 66 and is near the entrance to Fort Leonard Wood.

If you are looking for a 50's diner with southern fare, this is the place for you.
