Somewhere between Death Valley, Mojave National Preserve and the middle of nowhere is a pile of rocks. They are not just any rocks; they are painted rocks. Some are big and some are small, but each one was strategically placed here in secret, according to Ken Drylie.

“They are and I’d love to know how they moved them. I’ve never seen one moved,” Drylie says.

Drylie runs the General Robert W. Cone Heritage Center at Fort Irwin and though he’s never seen anyone place the rocks here, he does know the reason they were painted.

“These are world famous painted rocks. When a unit comes out here to train, after their training, they request permission to paint a rock with their distinctive unit insignia, but they have to move the rock here first,” Drylie says.

The units that Drylie is talking about are groups of newly trained soldiers at the Fort Irwin National Training Center.

“The rumor is that the reason they have to move the rocks is because Fort Irwin is full of rocks, and if all the rocks are removed the fort will cease to exist and everyone can go home,” Drylie says.

Newly trained soldiers have been painting rocks since the late 1960s. They were placed outside Fort Irwin’s entrance gate for two reasons. One, so civilians could see them, and two--because Fort Irwin is one of the most intense training facilities in the world and getting through it is worth commemorating.

“A week in Fort Irwin was worse than your entire deployment to Iraq. We gave everything you were gonna hit within a week,” Drylie says.

The General Robert W. Cone Heritage Center tells the long history of Fort Irwin. Military operations in the area date back to the 1800s but Fort Irwin became an actual training center in the 1940s and trained soldiers to shoot down enemy aircraft. Eventually the military expanded Fort Irwin’s training facility and created what’s known as “the Box,” which is short for the sandbox.

“The training area here is roughly the size of Rhode Island,” Drylie says.

The Army uses “the Box” as a battle tactics zone to prepare troops for deployment.

The Box is made to look and feel realistic. The Army has created several battle scenarios which include actors and ornate set pieces.

“We contracted out with people from Hollywood to come up and do set dressing on our land-sea containers,” Drylie says.

Speaking of Hollywood. Fort Irwin has been the backdrop of numerous movies. “The very opening scenes of G.I. Joe, when the bots get hit by the nano-probe, that was on our Bicycle Lake,” Drylie says.

Several miles from the shooting, explosions and Hollywood sets is NASA’s Goldstone Deep Space Communication Complex. These massive Radio telescopes play a crucial part in space exploration.

In the case of radio telescopes, bigger is better. The Goldstone complex can beam messages up to the International Space Station and 14 billion miles away to the Voyager spacecraft.

Despite being in the middle of nowhere, a few hundred service members and their families live at Fort Irwin, and for many it’s an unforgettable experience.

“I had a guy who was here in the 1950s come back, and he cried when he left. He actually broke down,” Drylie says.

The General Robert W. Cone Heritage Center at Fort Irwin is open to the public by special request.

Epic STINGRAY CITY ANTIGUA ~ Best underwater & UAV Drone Caribbean ~ WeBeYachting.com

We had the opportunity to visit the Stingray City, where you can snorkel with Southern Stingrays in their natural environment. Located of the coast of Antigua on one of the most beautiful reefs.

With flat, wide bodies, stingrays may not look like fish, but they are!

Stingrays are commonly found in the shallow coastal waters of temperate seas. They spend the majority of their time inactive, partially buried in sand, often moving only with the sway of the tide. The stingray's coloration commonly reflects the seafloor's shading, camouflaging it from predatory sharks and larger rays. Their flattened bodies are composed of pectoral fins joined to their head and trunk with an infamous tail trailing behind. There is 60 species of stingrays around the world.

Some factual information:
1.The largest species of stingray measure 6.5 feet in length and can weigh up to 790 pounds.
2.Stingrays are closely related to sharks.
3.They use this venom to protect them from predators. In fact, Greek dentists once used it as anesthetic.
4. Stingrays eat clams, shrimp, and mussels. Since their mouths on on the underside of their bodies, they catch their prey, then crush and eat with their powerful jaws.
5. While the stingray's eyes peer out from its dorsal side, its mouth, nostrils, and gill slits are situated on its underbelly. Its eyes are therefore not thought by scientists to play a considerable role in hunting. Like its shark relatives, the stingray is outfitted with electrical sensors called ampullae of Lorenzini. Located around the stingray's mouth, these organs sense the natural electrical charges of potential prey.
6. they swing is groups known as schools.
7. Stingrays give birth each year. They can have between 2 and 6 offsprings a year, each which can live between 15 and 25 years in the wild.
8. When they are inclined to move, most stingrays swim by undulating their bodies like a wave; others flap their sides like wings. The tail may also be used to maneuver in the water, but its primary purpose is protection.
9. The stingray's spine, or barb, can be ominously fashioned with serrated edges and a sharp point. The underside may produce venom, which can be fatal to humans, and which can remain deadly even after the stingray's death. In Greek mythology, Odysseus, the great king of Ithaca, was killed when his son, Telegonus, struck him using a spear tipped with the spine of a stingray.
10. Stingrays are totally HARMLESS if left alone, they get a bad rap because on 4 September 2006 Irwin was on location at Batt Reef, near Port Douglas, Queensland, taking part in the production of the documentary series Ocean's Deadliest. During a lull in filming caused by inclement weather, Irwin decided to snorkel in shallow waters while being filmed in an effort to provide footage for his daughter's television programme.
While swimming in chest-deep water, Irwin approached a stingray with an approximate span of two metres (6.5 ft) from the rear, in order to film it swimming away.
According to the incident's only witness, “All of a sudden [the stingray] propped on its front and started stabbing wildly with its tail. Striking within a few seconds”. Irwin initially believed he only had a punctured lung; but the stingray's barb pierced his heart, causing him to bleed to death. The stingray's behaviour appeared to have been a defensive response to being boxed in. Crew members aboard Irwin's boat administered CPR and rushed him to shore. Medical staff pronounced him dead at the scene.
Irwin's death is believed to be the only fatality from a stingray ever captured on video.
Footage of the incident was viewed by Queensland state police as part their mandatory investigations. All copies of the footage were then destroyed at the behest of Irwin's family.Production was completed on Ocean's Deadliest, which was broadcast in the US on the Discovery Channel on 21 January 2007. The documentary was completed with footage shot in the weeks following the accident, but without including any mention of Irwin's accidental death.

AGAIN STINGRAYS ARE TOTALLY HARMLESS IF LEFT ALONE.

We are always glad to hear your comments and cheers from the IGY Simpson Bay Marina in Sint Maarten.

Filmed by Annie & Captain Eric Bergeron, with a some of the awesome under water footage provided by Yarna Dibden, her YouTube Channel can be found here:

Owlshead Mountains, a nervous ride

*do not approach or feed burros! they are Mean and dangerous!*
recorded April 2022
Hike to Ibex Springs here
Got a little spooked by the deep gravel and crazy sound coming from my truck after taking some large rocks but we made it/ pipes eventually bent themselves back into place more or less but still making a little noise. I think a rock was lodged in between the pipes and frame or something for awhile. The noise was so strange, almost sounded like a rock got up into my clutch assembly but ultimately: i was being overly paranoid after just barely making it through about a mile of deep gravel. The wind was howling, it was 95F and climbing, and we were very much alone. 25 miles from the highway 15 miles and over a hill from the turnoff where people might pass by- i had a bicycle just in case but really did not want to need to use it. Our goal had been to see Lost Lake as well but even the good road was in bad shape and there would be another sandy area to cross up ahead so we gave up and went back. I would have liked to camp in view of Owl Lake but it was too wide open in the wind and if we were going to get stuck in the gravel, i needed time to dig out so we went back right away. Like I said in the video/ any 4x4 and most vehicles with Larger tires could make it through here without much difficulty but we were too low for those gravel ruts of a road. Having the tires at half pressure helped keep us moving but i was afraid to slow down or stop, it was too soft. Note the road deteriorates Rapidly once you descend off that last slope into the canyon. If you are not prepared for deep sandy gravel, you may get stuck and there is no one coming to help you. 4x4s will find there is enough gravel to keep you from bogging down but please take it slow there are sudden turns.

Off-Road California Mountains Randsburg Mojave Desert Ghost Town Thanksgiving 2015 0289

Off-Road String of Videos (Playlist) Off-Road California Mojave Desert Mountains by Randsburg Thanksgiving 2015

Photos at

Old West Desert Mountain Town at 3,600 feet (1,104 meters) above sea level (in southern California when as many as 2,000 to 10,000 to 20,000 people camp out in cottages and circle up in RV Round-Ups stretching for thirty miles from Randsburg to Johannesburg along US 395 south to California City, east of Mojave, 2-1/2 hours east of a totally different culture in Los Angeles. Off Roaders, Dirt Bikers and 4 Wheelers, love the basin and range with salt flats and endless twist and turn in the higher elevations of sagebrush hills and desert mountains in the warm southern California chaparral.

On the high end of Main Street in the Living Ghost Town of Randsburg only local artists show in the Randsburg Art Gallery. Randsburg resident population is not 70, not 50, but recently down to 48 people in the heart of this mountain side enclave of Bohemians living on the cool north slope.

Great views extend over mountain ranges Rand, El Paso and southern end of the Sierras to the northwest layering fifty miles deep into the Sierras at the far north of the Owens Valley greatly valued by many Wild West Hollywood movie directors including backgrounds for John Wayne films.

From the wide balcony of the Cottage Hotel at the high end of town, the northeast view looks over the tops of three mountain ranges advancing into lost desert basin and range, layering in greys from light to dark hiding mysteries of pioneers and prospectors of the Audacious Generation struggling against the Wild West impelled by burning visions inspired by travel guides and drawings of the 1850s overland journals telling wild stories of the greatest migration of people in the history of the world. Some of them pared off on the dry eastern drainage of the Sierras. People such as Seldom Seen Slim and desert homesteaders like the prior generations of Scrappy, manager of the Cottage Hotel, happy to be in the area all her life.

Antique phosphate sodas are thankfully not as sweet as many soda pops today.

In the Randsburg Art Gallery a hand painted map of southern California high desert depicts the highest elevation in the continental USA - Mount Whitney 14,495 feet above sea level in the Sequoia National Forest in the southern Sierra Nevada Mountains and a moderate distance to the east-southeast the lowest point in the United States - Death Valley at 282 feet BELOW sea level, too hot and too dry in the summer. In between are military reservations of Fort Irwin desert warfare and armored tank training center, China Lake Naval Weapons Center and Edwards Air Force Base. The map is a fresco 10 foot square. Off map to the northeast in southern Nevada is Nellis Bombing and Gunnery Range and off map to the south is experimental military aircraft development center - Skunk Works, famous since the 1950s with the X-1 to Right Stuff coming together in the X-15.

First Bank of Randsburg was open for six months then failed. Randall Hoot Smith is now the pleasant owner.

Erma Maw - Choctaw Indian Artist.

Scene from Darwin, mining ghost town in southern California. Artist uses as many as thirty layers of paint, many layers use translucent paint.

Randsburg centrally located for hiking in the Sierras of southern Tulare County and eastern Kern County, and also other marvels of the Mojave Desert in southern Inyo County.

Randsburg is about 1200 feet (368 meters) above the much hotter desert floor, hence it is good for overnight stays before heading to Death Valley National Monument or other areas in the Mojave Desert. Only three hours from Los Angeles, Randsburg is also due east of the southern tip of the Sierra.
