Moheli - A hidden gem in the Comoros Island

#hiddenparadise #localconservation #indianocean #protectnature

An impulsive decision to head to a remote island in the middle of the Indian Ocean led to one of most incredible four day working side by side with my good friend Rudi Wild and Moheli National Park. We spent every second of our time filming this spectacular gem of nature both on land and underwater. Less than 700 tourists Moheli every year. Which just goes to show how special this place is.

Huge thanks to the team of Mohéli National Park for making this possible.

Bouni Beach in Grande Comore, Comoros

Bouni is a coastal village on the island of Grande Comore in the Comoros.
Bouni Beach is one of the busiest beaches around Comore. It is popular to both Tourists coming for sightseeing and villagers. And is famous for events and the weekends are more lively with all kinds of concerts by famous musicians that frequent the beach.Other activities that take place include beach sport like volleyball, football, and soccer. The locals are very friendly people so getting along is no problem.

Crystal clear sea, fine white sand, and a forest of palm trees make Bouni Beach a perfect getaway. Locals and tourists gather here for volleyball and soccer, or just swimming in the warm Indian Ocean. Though generally lacking infrastructure, the beach has some improvised huts and bars, which add a special charm to the place. Feel free to pitch a tent and spend a couple of nights in the peaceful and safe atmosphere.

Bouni and Chindini on the eastern coast and Chomoni on the southern coast are like a small tropical Eden, with just a few baobabs and wooden bungalows to shelter from the sun. Like Mauritius, the rich sealife in the waters of these beaches are perfect for diving, however, the only diving centre that exists is on Grande Comore, in the only luxury seaside hotel on the archipelago. This centre also organizes deep sea fishing expeditions and excursions around the island on a boat.

Morning Walk around Moroni (Comoros)

#Ngazidja

We took this video during a relaxing and rejuvenating morning walk around Moroni one Saturday. Wonderful weather, sweet moist rain filled scent in the air and greenery everywhere. It took us less than 1.5 hours walking about 2.15 Km around the city with a leisurely pace. Have tried to capture most of the important landmarks as we strolled from our residence in Chateaux towards Boulevard Karthala proceeding towards the National Museum and then from there taking a right towards the port where the ancient landmark Moroni Mosques are located further walking towards the Grand Mosque circle where the video ends, although we continued to walk towards the Moroni Port passing by Komo Cash towards Asgarali and Caltex Circle.

French is the language of administration and education, and Arabic is the language of religion. Comorian (also known as Shikomor) - a Bantu language closely related to Swahili - is the language of the people. It is spoken by nearly 97% of the population. Comorian is confined almost exclusively for oral use - in the few cases where it is written, it is written either in the Arabic script or the Latin script. Although the Latin script is more widely promoted, literacy in the Arabic script is higher.

Most Comorians speak Comorian as a first language and French as a second. Some can also speak Arabic.

Grande Comore
Trek to the Karthala volcano crater (6-8 hours walk up on a well-maintained path); possible as a day-tour or as a overnight tour of 2-3 days. There is a permanent camp below the crater with tents. It is also possible to visit the sulfur springs further along (additional 2-3 hours of walking). Guides available. A 2-day trek with accommodation, food, water, guide costs EUR 100 per person.
Lac Sale - salt-water lake adjacent to the beach beyond Mytsamiouli in Grand Comore in what seems to be an old crater near the sea. Impressive sight from the rock between the lake and the sea, making it possible to get a good 360 degree view of the scenery. The location is very close to the national road.
Dolphins off the coast beyond Hahaya
Beaches near Mitsamiouli (Galawa, Planet and Maloudja). Basic beachfront shacks available on Maloudja beach for EUR 30 per night.

Mohéli
Livingstone Bats up in the trees after a 1-1.5 hour hike.
Giant Sea Turtles laying eggs every day at Itsamia. Basic accommodation by a community project is available at EUR 25 per room.
Saint Antoine ridge hike is a medium to slightly difficult hike (depending on the season) up on a mountain ridge to an old house of a colonial French person. A large part of the hike is just going up, but parts of the hike are on the ridge which is supported left and right by trees (so you are basically walking on roots, like someone said).
Dive in the Marine National Park with Laka Lodge.

Anjouan
Rent a 4x4 car with a driver and drive around the island, taking in a small waterfall, old towns and views of mountains and beaches.

Comoros Tours Video

Comoros Tours Video - Haphazardly scattered across the Indian Ocean, the mysterious, outrageous and enchanting Comoros islands are the kind of place you go to just drop off the planet for a while. Far removed from the clutter that comes with conventional paradises -- sprawling hotels, neon discos -- the Comoros are so remote even an international fugitive could hide out here. In particular, the island of Mohéli, boasting the sleepy town of Fomboni. Anjouan is the beautiful sister among the already good looking cluster of islands, it does paradise so well, it actually lives up to all the clichéd expectations any traveller could possibly muster -- Palms, bananas and the scent of ylang-ylang and cloves borne on the breeze.

Rich in Swahili culture, and devoutly Muslim, the charming inhabitants of Comoros come from a legendary stock of Arab traders, Persian sultans, African slaves and Portuguese pirates. The four developed islands offer everything from relaxing on white-sand beaches by turquoise seas to hiking through rainforests on the lookout for giant bats. Grande Comore, the largest of the islands, boasts the largest active volcano in the world, Mt Karthala, which last blew its lid in 2005, flattening villages. The aftermath, though has created a spectacular desert landscape on the mountain, and walking and trekking here is particularly good. Also on Grande Comore, timeless Moroni is oozing with old-time Arabian flair. Mayotte, is the only island of the four still a part of France, and while some love the whitest of white beaches, others find it a little too 'French'.

Nicknamed 'Cloud Coup-Coup' land because of their crazy politics, the three independent islands (the fourth, Mayotte, is still a part of France) have experienced almost 20 coups since gaining independence in 1975! In fact, a Comorian president is lucky if there's time for his official portrait to be taken before armed men are once again knocking on the door. In the last decade, however, the quarrelsome tiff-prone independent islands agreed to put their differences aside and fly under the joint banner of the Union des Comores.

Holidaying in the Comoros isn't for everyone; travel will kick your arse at times. But it teaches lessons in patience, humility and resilience. Everything moves mora mora (slowly slowly) and tourism facilities are far from plush. Islam, and all its traditions, is evident everywhere. Women are expected to show modesty and cover up, and alcohol is a no-no for both sexes.

But if your idea of the perfect holiday is less about drinking rum punch in a skimpy bikini at a swank resort, and more about long, lazy days sipping tea and talking politics with the locals, then a safari in the exotic Comoros will probably be the kind of unpredictable, swashbuckling adventure you've been craving.
