NYC's Most Dangerous Neighborhood : Walking Brownsville, Brooklyn (July 2021)

Brownsville, Brooklyn consistently ranks as one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in NYC for violent crime, but is it really that bad? I take a walk through the notorious neighborhood and show that there is much more to the area than meets the eye. I finish the walk by visiting the newly opened Villain's Hideout Pizza Bar for some great food and company!

From Wikipedia:
Brownsville is a residential neighborhood located in eastern Brooklyn in New York City. The 1.163-square-mile (3.01 km2) area that comprises Brownsville has 58,300 residents as of the 2010 United States Census. The neighborhood's boundaries are unclear, but it is generally bordered by Crown Heights to the northwest; Bushwick and Cypress Hills to the north; New Lots to the east; Canarsie to the south; and East Flatbush to the west.

Founded in its current incarnation in 1858, initially a settlement composed of Jewish factory workers, Brownsville underwent a major demographic change in the 1950s that saw an influx of African-American and Latino residents. Since then, it has consistently held one of the highest poverty and crime rates of any neighborhood in New York City.

Corrections
At 1:23, I'm unsure if William Suydam declared bankruptcy.
At 5:36, Mike Tyson did not grow up in Van Dyke Houses, he grew up at 178 Amboy Street.

NYC's Roughest Neighborhood? : Walking in East New York, Brooklyn (January 22, 2021)

I walk through the neighborhood of East New York, Brooklyn from the Pennsylvania Avenue (3) Station, make my way to the Linden Houses, head north on Van Siclen Avenue, and then walk on New Lots Avenue.

From Wikipedia:
East New York is a residential neighborhood in the eastern section of the borough of Brooklyn in New York City, United States. Its boundaries, starting from the north and moving clockwise, are roughly the Cemetery Belt and the Queens borough line to the north; the Queens borough line to the east; Jamaica Bay to the south, and the Bay Ridge Branch railroad tracks and Van Sinderen Avenue to the west. Linden Boulevard, Pennsylvania Avenue, and Atlantic Avenue are the primary thoroughfares through East New York.

East New York was founded as the Town of New Lots in the 1650s. It was annexed as the 26th Ward of the rapidly growing City of Brooklyn in 1886, and became part of New York City in 1898. During the latter part of the twentieth century, East New York came to be predominantly inhabited by African Americans and Latinos.

An Insider Tour of NYC’s Most Horrible Slum - The Hole

The Hole, as the small 5 block area is officially and suitingly called, looks like something out of a post apocalyptic sci fi film. The vast majority of New Yorkers don’t even know this area exists since it is so well hidden in a small forgotten pocket on the Brooklyn- Queens border.

This is often considered the worst slum in New York City with a sizeable homeless and squatter population. The neighborhood is completely disinvested and in utter ruin. Most of the area residents are well below the poverty line, or have no income whatsoever.

The area is literally a hole, as it is 30 feet lower than the surrounding area. This creates vast flooding, many streets of which one cannot drive down and you would have to kayak down instead. The area is filled with vermin and stray animals, and is notorious for being the home of some of the most polluted water, air, and ground in New York City.

Also, the area was the site of a body dumping ground of the New York City Mafia during it's heydey in the 1970s-1990s. The FBI recovered several bodies buried in abandoned lots throughout The Hole.

Most of the streets are unpaved, and are simply dirt pathways- usually inundated like a river. Freakishly, area residents also seem to suggest that The Hole is filled with fugitives as it is one of the easiest places to hide. There are people who have been living in makeshift homes in the Hole for decades.

The Hole is by far the worst neighborhood in New York City, the worst slum in Brooklyn, and one of the most abandoned neighborhoods in the USA.
