Finike, Beautiful Place near Antalya Turkey | Creative Tourist
Finike, the ancient Phoenix or Phoinix (Ancient Greek: Φοῖνιξ), also formerly Phineka, is a district on the Mediterranean coast of Antalya Province in Turkey, to the west of the city of Antalya, along the Turkish Riviera. It is located on the southern shore of the Teke peninsula, and the coast here is a popular tourist destination. However, Finike is best known for its oranges, the symbol of the town.
For centuries Finike, then named Phoenix (or Phoinix; Ancient Greek: Φοῖνιξ) was a port town of ancient Lycia, near the mountain of the same name.[5][6] It was a trading port and the main port of Limyra, the capital city of Lycia. Phoenix was said to have been founded by Phoenicians in the 5th century BC, and thus named after its founders.
The area has been inhabited for much longer than that; archaeologists have found evidence near the town of Elmalı showing that the Teke peninsula has been settled since 3000 BC (although on the coast nothing has been uncovered dating before 2000 BC).
Trade along the coast was established first by the Persians, who relinquished Lycia to the armies of Alexander the Great. However, the coast was always vulnerable to forces from Syria, Egypt and Rhodes until it was brought within the empire of the Ancient Romans and the succeeding Byzantines. Even then the Byzantines were threatened by the Arabian armies coming from the Arabian Peninsula. The Battle of the Masts between the Arab and Byzantine fleet took place near Finike in 654. Eventually the area was lost to the Seljuk Turks in the 13th century. These were succeeded by the Ottoman Empire from 1426.
The town was inhabited by Greeks prior to the 1923 population exchange between Greece and Turkey
The district has a population of 46138 according to the 2010 census. The town itself has 11.329 inhabitants. Finike has 4 municipalities(Hasyurt, Sahilkent, Turunçova and Yeşilyurt) and 14 villages.
The local economy depends on agriculture, particularly oranges and other citrus fruits. This is supplemented by income from tourism in the summertime, although because of the lucrative orange production and the distance from Antalya, Finike has not seen the large-scale tourism boom that has so radically changed the other coastal districts of Antalya. Finike is a quiet district where people buzz around on mopeds going about their daily lives. Indeed, many of the visitors that Finike does attract are retired people in search of relaxation. That's mostly because of the construction policy of 1980. That policy made the land more suitable for investment in agriculture rather than in hotels, luxury apartments and other tourist attractions.
A type of pale limestone is quarried at Limyra, and sold as a decorative building material. It is cream colored with a homogeneous structure. Moreover, it is extremely light and that makes it ideal for building walking alleys and streets where only light vehicles pass by. The geologist classify the Limura limestone as with medium density.[9]
The port of Finike is now a yacht marina, and has a small fishing fleet. The coast is rich in marine life, including sea turtles, and fish, including local specialities red porgy (Sparidae) and grouper (Epinephelus); other fish found along the coast include leerfish (Carangidae) and the more widespread Mediterranean varieties such as bluefish, sea bream, sea bass, with swordfish, sardines and others found further out to sea. However, the coast suffers from overfishing, and many varieties, including the porgy, are in decline.
The beaches of Finike are an important nesting ground for Caretta caretta sea turtles, and the rocky parts of the coast are used by the rare Mediterranean monk seal.
The ruins of Limyra are to be seen three miles east of the Finike, they consist of a theatre, tombs, Sarcophagi, bas-reliefs, Greek and Lycian inscriptions, etc.The ancient city of Arycanda, in a narrow valley off the road to Elmalı.The ruins of Trysa with a carved frieze depicting Theseus, on the road to Kaş.The small village of Turuncova, hidden in a small valley of Taurus Mountains, has preserved its traditional lifestyle and culture.The cave of Suluin.Wreck of a Phoenician merchant ship from about 1200 BC in Cape Gelidonya

Finike is a small town off the beaten path. Probably wouldn't hear about it as a foreigner as it is mostly a Turkish destination. The people of Turkey come here to enjoy the coastline and beaches, relax, and have some chai. It doesn't boast of a huge nightlife or shopping malls. It is a small town... a small town with a big heart. It concentrates on what matters most, a good life.
As you roam the streets you will find a very family oriented and welcoming community. There are so many parks with playgrounds for the kids and cafes for the adults. Icecream shops. Pocket parks full of small tables, where every table will be occupied with friends enjoying a game of rummikub and chai. It is lovely to see and feels great.
The town is lined only with small businesses and services that work together and encourage community relationships. Chai is regularly served, as tradition, to customers over friendly conversation.
As far as industry, Southern antalya is the agricultural epicenter for Turkey. The region will supply most of Turkey and export, so they are quite successful in their endeavors. Being a coastal town, you will definitely see fishing boats and fishermen working their lines off the jetties and plenty of fresh fish markets.
As far as sailing goes, there is great liveaboard community. We offered a tour of Setur Marina in Finike in our last video if you want to check it out.

TUR#7 ~ Our alternative to our alternative lifestyle, marina life in Finike, Turkey, on Sea Odyssey
Depending on where you are in the world, a lot of boaters will find a place to winter if they find themselves in colder climates or areas of stronger winter weather. Staying on anchor at these times is a lot less fun, believe me. Staying warm could be an issue if your main source of heat is electric, which is made worse with cold rains, big seas, and blistering gusts. So wintering in a marina is very attractive at these times.
Marina life can look very different from place to place and from country to country. One thing is for sure, electricity is always running and hot showers are on tap! Another great feature is being behind a wall called a breakwater. This wall protects the boats inside the marina by blocking the waves from coming in the marina, well mostly anyway, keeping life on an 'even keel' (side note - funny 'even keel' comes from boating.) Plus, now that you all snug against a dock, you can just walk off the boat to go anywhere... go to the grocery store, go for a walk, I don't know, just live life normal. So all these conveniences make marina life a welcome change for a minute.

Finike (General Information)
Finike
Finike is a tourism spot in Antalya province with a perfect blend of history, nature and sea. The district draws attention with the ruins of Limyra and Arykanda ancient cities. It is also famous for its oranges.
History
It is founded with the name of Phoinikos at the entrance of Aykırı (Arykandos) Brook in the 5th century B.C. It is supposed that the name 'Finike' comes from the Phoenicians who used the region as a trade centre. Limyra, the capital city of the region, was known as the harbour where the export of its agricultural produces was carried out.
Climate
With hot and dry summers and warm and rainy winters, the Mediterranean Climate is dominant in the region.

Finike is located on the south of the Teke coast, 90-minute drive west of the modern city and capital of the region, Antalya. Finike, which was formerly known as Phoenicus was founded in the 5th century by the Phoenicians and served as a major trading port for the region under the Persian rule. The ancient port later became part of Alexander the Great's Empire, the Roman Empire, the Byzantine Empire, it fell to the Seljuk Turks and finally came under the Ottoman Empire. The resilient port town has survived attacks of armies from Syria, Egypt, Rhodes and was temporarily occupied by Arab forces. Historical sites are dotted about the town and ancient sites remain scattered across the rugged mountain backdrop.
Despite a huge increase in tourism in southwest Turkey, the town of Finike had remained mostly untouched. The old port is now a modern marina which hosts a small fleet of fishing boats plus Traditional Turkish Gulet boats. The town's main source of income comes from the cultivation of oranges, the flat plains east of the town are filled almost exclusively with orange orchards. Street vendors can be seen selling the juicy fruit every hundred meters or so. Even the local symbol of the town is an orange although this is not the regions only produce. Every Saturday a huge agricultural market is held, where you can find an abundance of fresh fruit and veg, meats, cheeses, olives, nuts, and other locally sourced products.
A wide sandy beach stretches to the east of the city for over 20 kilometres, the sea here is rich in underwater life and the beaches are home to rare loggerhead sea turtles and the protected Mediterranean monk seal. Sea bass, sardines, sea bream and swordfish have also been spotted along the coastline.
Finike is well connected by local buses to other major towns along the coast, at less than an hour from the tomato growing town, Demre and the popular holiday town, Kas.

TUR#3 ~ Sailing from Fethiye to Finike, Turkey, on sv Sea Odyssey
We sailed from Fethiye to Finike, Turkey. It took a couple of lovely days. We found a small anchorage that was pretty sketch. I mean the anchorage was fine, beautiful in fact, you see it in the opening footage. There were some ruins on that island that we would have loved to have checked out but we had to go. We had a great sunset that night. Perfect really. But it was a bit windy and we were not getting blown in the right direction. We were on high alert that night.
The second day we anchored, you see here. Lovely. Right outside of Kas. We had a dinghy come up to us to make sure we knew the regulations set in place to conserve nature. That was nice.
The main focus of the video is the strange current we saw throughout the whole journey. We did some research but were unable to really ascertain wth was going on. Please comment if you have some idea.

Hep geçerken gördüğümüz bu güzel ilçenin dört bir yanını keşfedip fotoğrafladık ve videsounu çektik. Çok güzel manzaraları olan; ''Turizmin Tarımı Yenemedeği'' nadir ilçelerden biri olan, Portakalın Başkenti Finike'yi biz çok sevdik.
