The Estherville Meteorite - Largest to Strike North America
On May 10, 1879 the largest recorded meteorite to ever strike the North American continent made a crash landing just north of the town of Estherville, located in Northwest Iowa.
A Stone Plaque along the side of the road marks the crash site. A Meteorite Museum to commemorate this historic landing from the cosmos is in the works located in downtown Estherville, I've linked a website with more info. below.

Discovering Fort Defiance State Park
Welcome to another Country Pilgrim edition as we discover Fort Defiance, State Park.
We walk the trails, explore the woods and park, and learn a little bit about the history. The Iowa State Park website ( shares this background story about the area: Fort Defiance State Park is named for the fort that once stood in the nearby community of Estherville. In the mid-19th century, there was considerable concern among the settlers about the possibility of attacks by hostiles. In March of 1857, forty men, women, and children were massacred near Spirit Lake and Okoboji. In 1862, a wounded 15-year old boy stumbled into town with the story of an Indian massacre in Jackson, Minnesota. This brought terror into the community and Captain W.H. Ingham and Company A of the Northern Border Brigade were dispatched to Estherville to construct Fort Defiance. The townspeople eventually moved into the enclosure but the feared Indian attack never came. Over time, the fort was taken apart and the timbers used to build cabins.

In this episode we continue down the 147 miles Highway 4 trail - and discover a historical, working, and operating/museum and tourism award-winning furniture shop in Jefferson, Iowa. What made it more unique was the back half was converted into a theatre - which still plays work just-off the state in New York, City and brought to the midwest stage! The History Boy Theatre - makes the entire experience mind-boggling -
The furniture store itself is jaw-dropping because everything from the tools, techniques, and styles are derived from the 19th Century. It's unique to see how hand woodworking and furniture making is a lost art, but how the quality and craftsmanship in the work is top notch.
Following the furniture shop and theatre, I barely miss climbing the Jefferson-Iowa Bell Tower and conclude with a Hyw 4 Trail Ending solute in Panora, Iowa at Lake Panorama.
