Renfrew is the former county town of the historic county of Renfrewshire, situated 3 miles northeast of Paisley and 5 miles west of Glasgow.
Recently named as one of the UK’s top towns, the historical county town of Renfrew has lots to offer. It is also known as ‘the cradle of the Stewarts’ for its early links with Scotland’s former royal house. The stunning A-listed mid-Victorian Renfrew Town Hall building, often referred to as the ‘Disney Castle’ for its distinctive tower, should be your starting point, housing a VisitScotland 4-star-awarded community museum which tells the story of Renfrew’s rich heritage. The town is also ideally-placed for exploring the Renfrew Riverside area and the many shopping and leisure activities available at intu Braehead and Soar.
The Renfrew to Yoker ferry provides a passenger-only ferry service across the 200m wide River Clyde between Renfrew on the south bank and Yoker on the north bank.
Since April 2010 the service has been operated by Clyde Link. The ferry currently in use appears to be nameless, which is unusual for a boat. We also show on this page the ferry initially used by Clyde Link, the Island Trader, an aluminium landing craft built by Robust Boats of Haverfordwest in Wales.

Montrose is a coastal resort town and former royal burgh in Angus, Scotland. Montrose is situated 38 miles north of Dundee between the mouths of the North and South Esk rivers. Montrose is the northernmost coastal town in Angus and developed at a natural harbour that traded in skins, hides and cured salmon in medieval times.
The skyline of Montrose is dominated by the 220-foot (67 m) steeple of Old and St Andrew's Church, designed by James Gillespie Graham and built between 1832 and 1834. Montrose is a town with a wealth of architecture, and is a centre for international trade. It is an important commercial port for the thriving oil and gas industry.
Montrose is known for its wide thoroughfare and high street which leads to picturesque closes containing secluded gardens. The town has a view of a 2 mi (3 km) square tidal lagoon, Montrose Basin, which is considered a nature reserve of international importance. Montrose is the largest inland salt water basin in the UK, and an important habitat for the mute swan. Just outside Montrose is the 18th-century House of Dun, designed by the Scottish architect William Adam and built in 1730 for David Erskine, 13th Laird of Dun.
Montrose occupies a position on the North Bank of Montrose Basin at the mouth of the River South Esk on the East Coast of Scotland, The expanse of the town extends to the villages on its fringes; Hillside and Ferryden. It lies close to the hamlets of Lunan and St Cyrus. The rural location ensures that the air quality is good, with low levels of nitrogen dioxide and PM10.
The Montrose Basin is a shallow estuary approximately three miles in diameter. Montrose is situated where the River South Esk meets the North Sea. During the 16th century, local landowners desiring more arable land considered reducing its size, but their plans were never carried out.
The 3-mile-long (4.8 km) sandy Montrose Beach has been awarded a Blue Flag for its eco credentials. The surrounding Traill Pavilion and Seafront Splash! facilities with an arcade, a playground, a café and an ice-cream stall is popular amongst locals and visitors alike. North of the town the River North Esk enters the North Sea across the Montrose Beach .

Late Autumn Road Trip Drive To Visit Erskine Church In Burntisland Fife Scotland
Tour Scotland late Autumn travel video of a road trip drive, with Scottish music, on ancestry visit to Erskine Church in Burntisland in Fife. Erskine church was built in Burntisland in 1903 as a Free Church to replace an 18th century church of the same name. It is located on a prominent site, overlooking The Links parkland and then South across Burntisland's expansive bay and the Firth of Forth. It sits within small garden grounds on a corner plot and there is housing to the north, west and east. The earliest historical record of the town was in the 12th century, when the monks of Dunfermline Abbey owned the harbour and neighbouring lands. The settlement was known as Wester Kinghorn and developed as a fishing hamlet to provide food for the inhabitants of Rossend Castle. The harbour was then sold to James V by the abbots of Dunfermline Abbey in exchange for a parcel of land. The land was granted royal burgh status by King James V in 1541. When the status was confirmed in 1586, the settlement gained independence from the barony of Kinghorn and was renamed Burntisland, possibly a nickname from the burning of fishermens' huts on an islet now incorporated into the docks.
The surname Erskine was originally derived from the lands of Erskine, which is an area to the south of the River Clyde in Renfrew. The name is believed to be ancient or Old British for green rising ground. The Erskines were staunch supporters of the Clan Bruce. Sir Robert de Erskine was an illustrious and renowned figure of his time. King David II of Scotland appointed him keeper of the strategic Stirling Castle. In 1350 Sir Robert Erskine was appointed as Chamberlain of Scotland and justicar north of the Forth. Erskine was also one of the nobles who established the succession to the throne of King Robert II of Scotland, who was a grandson of the great Robert the Bruce and the first monarch of the Stewart dynasty in 1371.

Alloa is a town in Clackmannanshire in the Central Lowlands of Scotland, on the north bank of the Firth of Forth close to the foot of the Ochil Hills 5.5 miles east of Stirling and 7.9 miles north of Falkirk. The town, formerly a burgh of barony, is the administrative centre of Clackmannanshire council. The economy relied heavily on trade through its port with mainland Europe, but competition from modern ports saw it close in 1970. The economy is now centred on retail and leisure after the closure of major industries; only one brewer and one glassmaker survive today. Alloa had a population of 18,989 at the 2001 census.
Alloa was long associated with the brewing industry, with at least nine major breweries producing ales at its height. However industrial decline during the late 20th century has led to the economy relying more on retail and leisure. The first brewing firms in the town were Younger in 1762 and Meiklejohn in 1784. Alloa ale was sent to London and George Younger had an extensive export trade to the West Indies, Egypt and the Far East. Alloa was also home to Alloa Brewery Co, developing Graham’s Golden Lager in 1927 which was renamed Skol in the 1950s.
Alloa is linked to the historic Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders housed at Stirling Castle. Many of the soldiers in WW2 fought under Montgomery at the Battle of El Alamein and Wadi Akrit where their commanding officer Lorne Campbell won a V.C. They were part of the 7th Argylls under the 51st Highland Division.
Alloa's most famous landmark is the 15th century Alloa Tower (National Trust for Scotland), the surviving part of the ancestral medieval residence of the Erskine family, the Earls of Mar. Despite extensive alterations both externally and internally, the Tower retains its original medieval wooden roof and battlements, as well as some internal features. It is one of the largest and earliest of Scottish tower houses.
The town formerly contained a large number of 17th and 18th century buildings, but most were cleared away as 'slums' in the 18th to 19th century. However, Alloa does retain some historic architecture in the form of Alloa Tower, Tobias Bauchop's House (1695),[20] Inglewood House, Gean House and Greenfield House.
Alloa Town Hall and Library was designed by the architect Alfred Waterhouse and built in 1886-9 at a cost of £18,008. Alloa War Memorial (1925) is by Sir Robert Lorimer with sculpture by Pilkington Jackson. After the closure of the Stirling-Alloa-Dunfermline line in 1968 and the Devon Valley Railway in 1973, rail links to the town did not exist for 40 years up until 2008. Alva, Scottish Gaelic: Allamhagh Beag, meaning little plain of the rock, is one of a number of towns situated immediately to the south of the Ochil Hills, collectively referred to as the Hillfoots villages or simply The Hillfoots. During the Industrial Revolution, Alva developed as a textile manufacturing centre; the woollen mills, originally water-powered, provided employment for locals and migrants to the area. Robert Erskine was born on 8 September 1677 a younger son of Sir Charles Erskine, 1st Baronet of Alva and his wife Christian Dundas of Arniston. He was born in the family home of Alva House in Clackmannanshire. His younger brother was Charles Erskine, Lord Tinwald. He was also a first cousin of John Erskine, Earl of Mar, born 1675, died 173,2 and Robert Dundas of Arniston, the Elder, and uncle to James Erskine, Lord Alva. He engaged in medical studies in Edinburgh, Paris and Utrecht receiving a doctorate in medicine in the latter, and was made a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1703. He arrived in Russia in the Summer of 1704 originally as physician to Alexandr Menshikov but within 6 months had found favour in the court of the tsar. Head of the entire medical chancellery, he was the Tsar's chief physician. He was appointed the first director of the St. Petersburg Kunstkamera and library with Johann Daniel Schumacher as his assistant. He created Russia's first herbarium in 1709. In 1716, the Tsar elevated him to privy councillor. In 1717 he escorted the Tsar on a trip to Germany, Holland and France. He died at Olonets near St Petersburg on St Andrew's Day, 30 November 1718 and was buried in the Alexander Nevsky Lavra in St Petersburg on 4 February 1719 being granted a full state funeral attended by the tsar. Erskine was a part of masonic network of Scottish Jacobites that influenced the Russian court. By the meteorological calendar, the first day of Winter is always 1st December in Scotland; ending on 28th of February. As part of my work i get to drive through some of the most outstanding scenery on some of Scotland's best and most scenic roads which I would like to share with you.
The whole series of clips is a drive from Glasgow along the Clyde coast and finally ending up in Ardrossan. This can easily be added to the Best of scotland road trips. Views over the River Clyde, Firth of Clyde and beyond to the Isles of Bute, Arran and Cumbrae. Passing by the historic towns of Paisley, Erskine, Port Glasgow, Greenock, Gourock, Wemyss Bay, Ardrossan and finally Saltcoats. All of these locations offer great opportunities for staycations and easily accessible daytrips from either Glasgow, Edinburgh or all over the central belt.

Glencoe To Fort Augustus SKYFALL- The Scottish Highlands Road Trip (Part 3)
Scotland Road Trip Part 3 - Starting at beautiful Glencoe, visiting Ben Nevis and then heading up the Great Glen to Fort Augustus on the South Western tip of Loch Ness.
Not far from the Glencoe visitors centre you can find the location of the iconic scene in the Bond film Skyfall. M and James Bond escape to the Scottish Highlands from London.
The exact spot is about 10 minutes off the main road.
The next stop was Ben Nevis the highest mountain in the UK. We didn’t choose to climb it but opted for lunch in the Ben Nevis Inn instead.
Continuing up the Great Glen we arrive in Fort Augustus and yes the sun came out. It’s where the Caledonian Canal connecting Fort William to Inverness descends in a dramatic series of locks to Loch Ness.
We stayed at the Caledonian Canal Centre alongside the locks which had rooms above it and a cafe below.
Our final stop on the way back to the airport was in Dores, the location on Loch Ness for Steve the Nessie hunter.
