Batticaloa is a major city in the Eastern Province, Sri Lanka, and its former capital.
- The Kalladi Bridge was built and completed during the British rule in 1924. A wonderful myth has been built around this bridge, and that is that there are singing fish under this Kalladi bridge.
- From Batticaloa Town, you can see the Batticaloa Lighthouse after going along the Bar Road for a few kilometers. Built by the British in 1913, this lighthouse is about 28 meters high.

Batticaloa Lighthouse and Lagoon Park, Popular Travel Place to Visit in Batticaloa, Sri Lanka
Batticaloa Muttuwaran Lighthouse is one of the most beautiful attractions in Batticaloa along with its Lagoon Park, which is also called Eco Park. The Lighthouse was built in 1913 by the British when Sri Lanka was under the British rule. It is 28 meters tall and located about 5km distance from Batticaloa town.

The surroundings are quite fascinating and it gives you a feeling of the eastern side in this country. I went there in the morning and the weather was wonderful and wasn't too harsh. Either visit the place in the morning or at evening as afternoon can be difficult for you to explore. There are so many coconut trees in a one side and on the other side, you can gaze at the beautiful and famous lagoon.
The reason why this lighthouse is called as Muttuwaran is, the locals call this as where the lagoon meets the sea where the name is translated as Muttuwaran.
There are many activities you can do around the lighthouse and some of them are, taking boat rides around the beach, seeing environment learning center library and lagoon viewing hall and spend a leisurely time at the eco-park to have a picnic. You can also go to the top of bird viewing tower to see the surroundings.
The area is ideal for cycle riding and walking, especially in the evening. One thing I noticed is, the place is not overcrowded and you have a pleasant time. For a photographer, this is a great place to see and capture both the sunrise and sunset.

Sallitivu coral island with coral reef beach
This beach is seen as bay of vaakare. Sallitivu tivu (tamil word) means island] is joined with main land area by a small strip of sand. During high tide season this sand strip might get covered with water. This coral island shore is covered with dead corals. You can walk on coral shore around the island which is roughly 750m.
This beach is beautiful and ultra-calm where can swim and play but beware of sea snakes. Shore can be selected for camping. From central bus station of Trincomalee you can take bus which goes through Mutur for about 1 hour 30 minutes of travel can arrive in Sallitivu which is a very small island. This beach is not crowded so you can enjoy private time.

Batticaloa is in the eastern coast of Sri Lanka on a flat coastal plain boarded by the Indian Ocean in the east occupies a central part of the eastern Sri Lanka. Its average elevation is around 5 meters.[10] Batticaloa district has three lagoons such as Batticaloa Lagoon, Valaichchenai Lagoon, and Vakari (Panichchankerni) Lagoon. Among these lagoon, Batticaloa Lagoon is the largest lagoon and has 56 km long 162 square km area, extending from Pankudaweli in North and Kalmunai in South.
There are several islands within the Batticaloa Lagoon such as Puliayantheevu, Buffaloa Island and Bone Island. Many bridges are built across the lagoon connecting the landmasses and the islands. The Puliayantheevu is the metropolitan place of the city. The biggest bridge of all is Lady Manning bridge located at Kallady, which is the main access path to the city from the southern places of the district. This bridge is also famous for Singing fishes which were considered as musical sounds heard in the Kallady lagoon on a full moon day. A priest named Father Lang recorded this musical charm and broadcast it in the 1960s over the (Sri Lanka Broadcasting Cooperation)
Batticaloa beaches are sandy and located along 4 km shoreline in the city and further extend through the neighboring places. They include Kallady beach, Pasikudah, and Kalkudah. Pasikudah is a bay protected from the ocean, with a flat and sandy bed extending 150 to 200 meters from the shore.
