Elorrio, a song of love
Euskal Herria straddles both sides of the Pyrenees and takes its name and nature from Euskera, its millenary language. It is made up of seven territories grouped within two States, France to the north and Spain to the south.
In the historic territory of Bizkaia, on the eastern end of the Duranguesado valley, protected by the Lady of Amboto, at the foot of mount Udalatx and bathed by the waters of the Zumelegi river, lies Elorrio.

A journey of colours, scents and flavours...
Elorrio, declared to be of historic cultural interest, carved in stone: fountains, stone crosses, coats of arms..., chapels and churches,... homesteads and palaces,... Masterful hands capable of drawing out the very essence of stone and of lending form to palaces where dreams are stored, to temples for praising God and stone crosses to guide the travellers on their way!
Life prevails here in all its plenitude.
And fantasy breaks out in all its expression.

There are so many AWESOME things to do in #Madrid Spain. #Madrid, Spain's central capital, is a city of elegant boulevards and expansive, manicured parks such as the Buen Retiro. It’s renowned for its rich repositories of European art, including the Prado Museum’s works by Goya, Velázquez and other Spanish masters. The heart of old Hapsburg Madrid is the portico-lined Plaza Mayor, and nearby is the baroque Royal Palace and Armory, displaying historic weaponry.

The journey continues as we depart the Monastery of Zenarruza on day 4 of the Camino de Santiago, Camino del Norte in August of 2020. On this day, we traverse inland through the beautiful mountains of Basque Country (País Vasco in Spanish) or Euskadi in the native language. The geography and terrain is absolutely stunning in addition to the small villages we pass through. There is so much wildlife to see and hear, as well as wild and cultivated plants and crops that the locals eat such as grapes, hazelnuts, kiwis, apples, peaches, and more! I was fortunate enough to meet some locals from Basque Country and they were able to sort of guide us and give us valuable information along the journey as well as show how kind and friendly they are.. I think they gave a great example of the people of Basque Country and their hospitality.
Near the end of the video, we pass through the famous town called Guernica (Gernika) which was destroyed by enemy bombers during the Spanish civil war. Francisco Franco's rebel Nationalist faction by its allies, the Nazi German Luftwaffe's Condor Legion and the Fascist Italian Aviazione Legionaria, were responsible for destroying the town and causing hundreds of civilian deaths. As such, one of the most famous paintings in world history, the Guernica Painting by Pablo Picasso comes from the very town. I end the day by saying goodbye to some new friends, and end up staying at a nice albergue called Pozueta, nestled in the Basque countryside.. The next day would be the journey to Bilbao, a more well-known city in the north of Spain. Enjoy!

BILBAO, BASQUE COUNTRY -- WALKING THE OLD TOWN
2018 Sep 02 -- Arrived in the morning in Bilbao, Spain from San Francisco, California. We ventured along Bilbao's river toward the old town. We saw so many impressive architectural buildings and colorful houses and bridges like Zubizuri. We continued on to Guggenheim Museum and enjoyed the exterior sculptures (The Spider and Puppy), fountains and the river views. Then we headed toward the old town (Casco Viejo). The heart of this old town are the 7 streets or Las Siete Calles. Getting lost while exploring the 7 streets is to discover a charming old town that has been always preserved for centuries. Quite a wanderer's delight with lots of attractive plazas, historic buildings, good food, and friendly locals walking the winding lanes. The main highlight of the day was trying Basque fabulous food esp Pintxos paired with txacoli right at the historic Mercado de la Ribera. Our next journey took us to Gaztelugatxe and Bermeo.
