Tarpon Springs Travel Guide | Sponge Docks + Anclote Key Florida | Exploring the Nature Coast | Ep.8

Join us on our 8th and final day of exploring the Nature Coast. On this day, we explore the famous sponge docks of Tarpon Springs plus the nearby Anclote Key.

We start our day by grabbing some delicious, authentic Greek coffee and pastries before hopping on a boat tour to Anclote Key. We were surprised to find the tour to be extremely educational and interesting, and we were amazed by the beauty of Anclote Key.

After returning to the mainland, we grab an amazing seafood lunch, do some exploring of the many sponge and soap shops, drop into a tiki bar and a brewery, and grab an amazing, authentic Greek dinner.

9 Best Things to Do in Tarpon Springs, Florida - The Sponge Capital of the World

Less than an hour drive north of Tampa on Florida’s Gulf Coast is one of the most offbeat, culturally-rich communities in the state of Florida.

Tarpon Springs was first settled in the 1870s, named for the giant tarpon that jumped and splashed in Spring Bayou. It was around the bayou where most of the town’s early development took place as a wintering spot for well-to-do northerners. Victorian-era houses still dot the neighborhood.

Toward the end of the century, boats would leave docks along Dodecanese Boulevard to harvest sponges from Key West to the Panhandle. For a bigger return, the Greek technique of diving for sponges was implemented. An influx of Greek immigrants to the area soon followed and the cultural identity of Tarpon Springs took root.

What was once a remote village became the “sponge capital of the world.” At one point, natural sea sponges retrieved from the Gulf surpassed citrus as Florida’s main export.

Sponges are still big business in Tarpon Springs and Greek heritage remains at the forefront. In fact, this community of just over 25,000 has the highest concentration of people of Greek descent than any other city in the nation.

On this episode, we take you to the sponge docks and beyond to show you the best things to do in Tarpon Springs.

Tarpon Springs Florida: The Best Greek Food At The Sponge Docks

Take a Greek food tour at the Sponge Docks in Tarpon Springs Florida.
The Greektown around Dodecanese Boulevard in Tarpon Springs Florida has many great Greek restaurants and bakeries. I head over to Mama's Greek Cuisine for some Souvlaki's and Pastitsio. If you are visiting Tampa or Clearwater Beach, take a short trip to Tarpon Springs Florida for the best Greek food in all of Florida. The Sponge Docks also have many souvenir shops, and boat tours in addition to amazing Greek food.
The Sponge Docks is known as the historic Greektown. Greeks came here to work in the sponge diving industry in the 1890s. Tarpon Springs Florida has the highest percentage of Greek Americans of any city in the US.

Tarpon Springs, Florida - As Greek As It Gets

Tarpon Springs, Florida is as Greek as it gets. The town was settled by Greek immigrants in the latter part of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. They were drawn to the village because of their skill as fisherman and sponge divers. The town was once the world’s largest producer of natural sponges. The industry is still here and so are the tourists drawn by the quaint picturesque Sponge Docks and historic downtown. Tarpon Springs has the largest percentage of citizens of Greek heritage of any place in North America. Every January 6th the Greek Orthodox Church in America makes Tarpon Springs the center of the Celebration of the Feast of Epiphany. The Archbishop blesses the water by throwing a cross into Spring Bayou and the boys of the Cathedral dive in to retrieve it. Tarpon Springs on Florida’s Gulf Coast is one of the most unique places in the world and well worth taking time for a visit. If you would like to see more of the Epiphany celebration click on the link below for my video.

Driving Around: TARPON SPRINGS, Florida - Sponge Docks, Downtown, Fred Howard Beach, & More

Come Drive Along as we explore beautiful Tarpon Springs, Florida on the Gulf Coast, not far from Tampa Bay. Located in Pinellas County, Tarpon Springs has the highest percentage of Greek Americans of any city in the US. and is known as the Sponge Capital of the United States.

History (from Wikipedia):
The region, with a series of bayous feeding into the Gulf of Mexico, was first settled by white and black farmers and fishermen around 1876. Some of the newly arrived visitors spotted tarpon jumping out of the waters and so named the location Tarpon Springs. In 1882, Hamilton Disston, who in the previous year had purchased the land where the city of Tarpon Springs now stands, ordered the creation of a town plan for the future city. On February 12, 1887, Tarpon Springs became the first incorporated city in what is now Pinellas County. Less than a year later on January 13, 1888, the Orange Belt Railway, the first railroad line to be built in what is now Pinellas County, arrived in the city. During this time the area was developed as a wintering spot for wealthy northerners.
In the 1880s, John K. Cheyney founded the first local sponge business. The industry continued to grow in the 1890s. Many people from Key West and the Bahamas settled in Tarpon Springs to hook sponges and then process them. A few Greek immigrants also arrived in this city during the 1890s to work in the sponge industry.
In 1905, John Cocoris introduced the technique of sponge diving to Tarpon Springs by recruiting divers and crew members from Greece. The first divers came from the Saronic Gulf islands of Aegina and Hydra, but they were soon outnumbered by those from the Dodecanese islands of Kalymnos, Symi and Halki. The sponge industry soon became one of the leading maritime industries in Florida and the most important business in Tarpon Springs, generating millions of dollars a year. The 1953 film Beneath the 12-Mile Reef, depicting the sponge industry, takes place and was filmed in Tarpon Springs.
In 1947, a red tide algae bloom wiped out the sponge fields in the Gulf of Mexico, causing many of the sponge boats and divers to switch to shrimping for their livelihood, while others left the business. Eventually, the sponges recovered, allowing for a smaller but consistent sponge industry today. In the 1980s, the sponge business experienced a boom due to a sponge disease that killed the Mediterranean sponges. Today there is still a small active sponge industry. Visitors can often view sponge fishermen working at the Sponge Docks on Dodecanese Boulevard. In addition, visitors can enjoy shops, restaurants, and museum exhibits that detail Tarpon Springs' Greek heritage.
In 2007 and 2008, the City of Tarpon Springs established Sister City relationships with Kalymnos, Halki, Symi, and Larnaca, Cyprus, honoring the close historical link with these Greek-speaking islands.

On this drive, you'll see the Historic Sponge Docks on Dodecanese Boulevard which also has a multitude of shops, restaurants, and attractions. Next, we pass through the Historic Downtown area with its many antiques shops. We then drive through beautiful residential areas wrapped around what looks like lakes but are actually bayous. Entering Fred Howard Park, we drive down a forest road. Suddenly, the trees give way to a spectacular water-lined driveway across Howard Park Causeway to Howard Park Beach located in Saint Joseph Sound and overlooking the Gulf of Mexico. We then travel through more residential areas as we head back to the Sponge Docks. Finally, we take a brief stroll around at night on New Year's Day!
