Madrid's Top 10 Places Every Traveler Should Visit

Madrid's Top 10 Places Every Traveler Should Visit

10. El Escorial
San Lorenzo de El Escorial is a town about 45 km from Madrid. Nestled in the foothills of the Sierra de Guadarrama, the city's main attraction is the world famous Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial, a World Heritage Site that was the political centre of the Spanish empire under King Philip II.

9. Museo de América
An excellent museum that many tourists miss. Houses thousands of artifacts from the Americas. The exhibit displays objects from many native cultures from before European conquest to colonial times and beyond. Don't miss the Tesoro de los Químbayas, a collection of gold objects that was given as a gift by the Colombian government.

8. Parque del Retiro
The main park of Madrid, the perfect place to take a rest during a sunny day, or take part in the drum circles around the statue of Alphonso XII on summer evenings. There is a large boating lake where one can hire a rowing boat - great fun for the children! Sunday afternoons in summer are a treat in the park, where young hippies play bongos and dance.

7. Centro de Arte Reina Sofía
Houses Madrid's best collection of modern art. It includes many of Pablo Picasso's most revered works including the renowned Guernica. The Reina Sofía also houses masterpieces by Miró, Kandinsky, Dalí, Bacon, and more.

6. Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza
The Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum is an art museum in Madrid, located near the Prado Museum at one of city's main boulevards. With over 1,600 paintings the Thyssen-Bornemisza collection was once the second largest private collection in the world after the British Royal Collection.

5. El Rastro
Madrid's largest flea market, featuring rows upon rows of private vendors selling a variety of homemade bads, and a plethora of live entertainment. It is very important to note that the Rastro is notorious for having an abundance of pickpockets, so watch your handbag closely and do not bring along valuables. edit

4. Monasterio de las Descalzas Reales
The Convent of Las Descalzas Reales is a royal monastery situated in Madrid, Spain, administered by the Patrimonio Nacional. The original architect of the church was Antonio Sillero. The facade was designed by Juan Bautista de Toledo in 1559; who also helped in the roofing of the church.

3. Plaza Mayor
Perhaps the best known plaza in Madrid, this impressive square is now one of the main stops on any tourist visit. Originally built outside the city walls, this enclosed square has played host to bullfights, markets, symphonies, tournaments and executions. Today it is ringed with tourist shops, cafes and restaurants.

2. Museo del Prado
One of the finest art collections in the world and the best collection of classical art in Madrid. It includes many different collections: the Spanish (El Greco, Velázquez, and Goya), the Flemish and Dutch (Rubens, van Dyck, and Brueghel), Italian (Botticelli, Tintoretto, Titian, Caravaggio, and Veronese) and German (Albrecht Dürer, Lucas Cranach, and Baldung Grien).

1. Palacio Real
The Palacio Real (Royal Palace) is an enormous palace, one of the biggest in Europe, with scorching plains of concrete around it. Though it is the official residence of the King of Spain, the royal family does not actually reside here and it is generally used only for state ceremonies. The Royal Palace is considered to be one of the most emblematic and beautiful buildings in Madrid, not only for its location on a bluff overlooking the river valley but also for its architecture and the artistic treasures to be found in its rooms.

The Monastery of El Escorial. Thigs to do in Madrid. Spain, Travel Guide

The project was conceived by King Philip II, who wanted a building to serve the multiple purposes of a burial place for his father, Holy Roman emperor Charles V; a Hieronymite monastery; and a palace.

The first architect, Juan Bautista de Toledo, designed the ground plan on a gridiron scheme, recalling the grill on which San Lorenzo, the patron of the building, was martyred.

After Toledo's death, Juan de Herrera took up work on the project. Although Herrera was influenced by the styles of Sebastiano Serlio and Giacomo Barozzi da Vignola, the final product was uniquely Spanish.

The building complex, severe in its lines, has four principal stories with large towers at each corner.

Arranged within a quadrangle, the buildings include:

the church (1582);
the monastery, royal palace, and college (1584);
and the library (1592).
The interior of the Escorial was decorated by many notable Spanish and Italian artists of the 16th and 17th centuries.

Pellegrino Tibaldi and Federico Zuccaro were among the earliest painters to execute frescoes there.

Other masters who painted works for the Escorial were El Greco, Luca Giordano, and Claudio Coello.

An important collection of paintings by Renaissance and baroque artists donated by the crown is among the many artistic treasures housed in the complex.

The decoration of El Escorial was carefully coordinated with the architecture to create a unified artistic effect. The sober statue of San Lorenzo on the main façade and the six statues of Old Testament kings on the façade of the basilica prepare the way for a splendid display of saints and kings inside the basilica.

Philip was difficult to please, but there was a compelling aesthetic reason to restrict individual artistic expression at the Escorial. Decoration needed to be in keeping with the sober, unornamented classicism of the building if it was to bring the triumphant unity of the project to full expression.

Although a great lover of painting, Philip made his choices for the painted decoration of the Escorial in relation to the architecture and the sculpture, trying to commission as few artists as possible in order to preserve a homogeneous effect.

This ideal and its successful achievement are most visible in the sanctuary of the basilica.

Nowhere else in Renaissance art do architecture, painting, and sculpture come together in a composition of such unified splendor in which every detail appears as a necessary part of the whole.

Later rulers modified El Escorial, although it still keeps its unity to this day. Philip IV completed the Royal Pantheon, a chapel containing the bodies of Spanish kings, in the 17th century.

There have been some losses to its collections because of fire and pillage, but El Escorial remains the most complete and impressive monument of the later Renaissance in Spain.

Today, the Escorial is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and it is one of Spain's most visited landmarks.

Experience the Majesty of El Escorial: Madrid's Best Day Trip

Our journey took us on a local train from Madrid to El Escorial, making for a delightful short day-trip to this unique Spanish Royal site boasting over 500 years of history. Constructed between 1563 and 1584 under the decree of King Philip II, El Escorial stands as the largest Renaissance building globally, encompassing roles as both a Spanish royal palace and an extensive library collection within a monastery. Composed primarily of local Gray granite, it assumes the form of a colossal quadrangle, accompanied by a meticulously designed adjacent garden. Though our visit revealed that the royal palace and monastery were closed for maintenance, we reveled in the serene surroundings on this scorching day, relishing tranquility as we strolled through the historical site before returning to Madrid. In 1984, El Escorial earned the prestigious designation of a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, a testament to its enduring cultural significance.

Visit to El Escorial, Spain

The El Escorial is a UNESCO’s World Heritage Site and it is Spain’s one of the most visited landmark.

Just 45 Kilometers north of Madrid.

On a nice day, this is breath taking and beautiful place to visit for a palace and a small village trip. Even on a bad day, it looks stunningly majestic, as you will notice.

Royal Site of San Lorenzo de El Escorial - Spain 4K Travel Channel

The weather in El Escorial is cold and does not meet our expectations at all. So we decide to visit the interior of the palace and monastery complex.
After Philip II of Spain had won the Battle of Saint-Quentin against King Henry II on 10 August 1557, he decided to let build up a monastery. The result is the largest Renaissance castle in the world. It is located 45 km north-east of Madrid.

Das Wetter in El Escorial ist kalt und entspricht nicht unseren Erwartungen, also beschließen wir erst einmal das Innere der Schloss- und Klosteranlage zu besichtigen.
