I recently discovered a nature paradise - a perfect weekend escape just 45 minutes from Medellin, located close to the town of Santa Elena. A place where you can escape the hustle and bustle of the city, enjoy the tranquility and breathe in the fresh mountain air. In this video I'll show you the beautiful cabin I stayed in, we'll take a walk on a scenic tourist route, and also visit an amazing viewpoint with spectacular views of the mountains and countryside. Salento is a charming little pueblo in the Quindio region of Colombia...and there is SO MUCH to do there! In today's video we are doing the famous Cocora Valley hike! This hike takes us through cloud forests, jungle, valleys, and the tallest palm trees in the world. We did the full loop, which took us around 7 hours with filming, taking photos, and enjoying the views. Normally it should take you around 5 hours, don't miss it in Colombia!

COLOMBIA Before the Pandemic! Colonial Bogotá, HUGE Market of Paloquemao, and a Country Village!
We're taking a trip back in time to Colombia before the coronavirus pandemic in this special episode of Gone Native. This footage was shot way back in 2019, when Lina and I took a walk around central Bogotá, including the historic colonial district of La Candelaria, and went to visit the HUGE central market plaza of Paloquemao. You can find all kinds of fresh, organic food, sustainable produce, meats, cheeses, exotic fruits and vegetables, even household goods, artesanal crafts, flowers, and just about everything else under the sun.
Make sure and watch the whole video to see a typical village DEEP in the Colombian countryside, real working potato fields, cattle grazing on hillsides of the Colombian Andes mountains, an entire market stall with at least half a dozen different kinds of avocados, a stall overflowing with giant orange pumpkins, and the original historic neighborhood of La Candelaria in Bogotá, where Simón Bolívar, the Liberator of Colombia and a large part of Latin America, once lived. We'll show you that, and so much more, so check it out!

After we stocked up on supplies, we headed for Subachoque, the small town in the department of Cundinamarca, just outside of Bogotá, where Lina's family keeps a finca. Fincas in Colombia can be simple country houses or working farms, but often both, and Lina's is no exception, since they both graze cattle and grow potatoes on their land.

Before going up to the finca, we were surprised to find a huge street fair happening in town, where vendors were selling all kinds of household goods, foods, desserts and treats. Among the street food vendors was a massive parrilla, or outdoor grill, where they were grilling huge sides of beef and pork, serving them with fresh cooked yuca (or cassava), potato, and guacamole from the amazing variety of fresh avocados you can find here in Colombia.
One of the more fascinating things about produce in Colombia is the sheer variety of familiar American staples, such as potatoes, corn, and potatoes. Not only can you find almost any type of these crops that exists, but in all kinds of wild shapes and sizes. In the United States, we only seem to want to see the most standardized and familiar shapes of produce like tomatoes and carrots in the grocery store, which leads to a lot being discarded or rotting in storage. But in Colombia, everything's for sale! No matter how bizarrely misshapen, gigantic or tiny something like a pumpkin or squash might be, people will happily buy it.

Welcome to Colombia
In traveling Colombia, you cannot miss visiting Guatape, a town approximately two hours from Medellin that holds the title of being Colombia’s most colorful town. Located on the shores of a sprawling barrier lake. Guatape, Colombia is known for its traditional and vibrant illustrations that cover the buildings in unique images of animals, people, and shapes. Its borders are the towns of Alexandria, San Rafael, San Carlos, Granada and El Peñol.
To go to Guatapé the easiest way is by bus taken in Medellín. This town offers religious tourism, agritourism and ecotourism, as it has both historical and artistic Colombian patrimony, as well as ecological destinations. Some of them are churches as Nuestra Señora del Carmen or the monastery of Los Monjes Benedictinos, the Street of Remembrance (La Calle del Recuerdo), among others. In its ecological destination are the recreational park La Culebra, the Malecón and of course, La Piedra del Peñol, or the big stone. Be sure to check out the incredible view from the top of La Piedra del Peñol. Other things to do include water sports, such as jet skiing and water skiing, and fishing.
