The Bunkers (Los Bunkers del Carmel) - Barcelona, Spain

One of many potential perfect ends to a perfect day in Barcelona is to venture up atop Turó de la Rovira in the Carmel neighbourhood to watch the sunset, casting a golden glow across the sea and the city. If you're on a romantic getaway or you just want to surprise your partner for a special occasion, this is definitely one of the best places to visit in Barcelona.

While there are many places to visit in Barcelona for exceptional views of the city's skyline, the Bunkers are a favourite local hang-out come evening owing, perhaps, to their unrivalled view of the coastline. There’s always a friendly atmosphere here as locals and visitors alike ascend the steep climb to be rewarded by the incredible views.

Walking up is a bit of a slog, we won’t lie, and takes about twenty minutes to half an hour, depending on your fitness level, but you can take the metro or V17 bus instead. The bus is probably the better option as it gets you closer to the top and passes by some interesting sites along the way, such as the Gothic Quarter, the beach, and Passeig de Gracia. Yours is the last stop, Gran Vista – Pl de la Mitja Lluna, and from there it’s about a six- or seven-minute walk to the bunkers.

To make the most of your time in Barcelona, and learn about the history, traditions and culture of the city, or indeed wherever your next destination may be, be sure to book a free tour of Barcelona with expert local guides.

There are lots of different tours to choose from, and all are geared towards helping you get real local insight to the places and people around you, our intriguing local culture and heritage, and are an unbeatable source for authentic local recommendations and insider tips for exploring and experiencing the wonderful city of Barcelona.

Beautiful BARCELONA, SPAIN ???????? ~ Gaudi Sites, Sagrada Familia, Park Guell, and Carmel Bunkers

This day in particular we fell in love with the Barcelona Gaudi architecture and the sites he worked on in the city.

First, we visited Sagrada Familia, which has been under construction for over 140 years and is still not finished. This place is unlike anything we’ve ever seen anywhere in the world! It is Gaudi’s most famous work.

A highlight of our visit to Sagrada Familia was going up inside the Nativity Tower, which was the only tower Gaudi worked on before his death in 1926.

Sagrada Familia is one of the most visited cathedrals in Europe for good reason! Be sure to book your tickets ahead of time. You’ll need to book for a specific time slot and show up on time to get in.
Get your tickets for Sagrada Familia + the Towers here:

Next, we walked about 10 minutes from Sagrada Familia to catch the V19 bus to Park Guell. The bus drops you a short 3-minute walk from the entrance.

Our top tip for transport in Barcelona is to buy a 10-ride pass at a metro station which can also be used on the buses. This will save you so much money as compared to buying single journey tickets for each trip. Public transportation is convenient and pretty easy to navigate in Barcelona.

Park Guell is a huge park in the city and Gaudi worked on many of the design elements inside. We spent over three hours just wandering around, following the signs to see various points of interest. There are picnic tables and places to hang out, so you could even bring some food and really make an afternoon of it.

Like Sagrada Familia, Park Guell is another very popular place to visit in the city, so be sure you book your tickets ahead of time. You’ll need to choose your entry time when you book and show up on time.

There’s an official Park Guell website, or if you’re interested in having a tour guide show you around, you can book here:

After visiting Park Guell, we took the bus (24 or V19) further up the hill to Carmel Bunkers. Despite the name, there were never bunkers there but it was an anti-aircraft site during the Spanish Civil War in the 1930s. Today it is a very popular spot for locals and tourists to watch the sunset with incredible sweeping views over the city. It’s free to visit. We grabbed some empanadas and bubble water on our way up to tide us over until dinner.

Barcelona has a diverse food scene (another reason we love it!), so we decided to go for an all-you-can-eat sushi buffet for dinner. We went to a place called Furawa, which was excellent and reasonably priced.

Bunkers del Carmel in 4K – Barcelona Viewpoint 360° City View

This is the bunkers of Carmel. The bunkers were build in 1938 during the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939) as a defence platform with four 105m Vickers guns and an anti–aircraft machine gun to defend Barcelona against the attacks by the facist forces. After the war it got occupied by immigrants and later after abandoning at the 1970s it got changed first to a school for adults and later to a temporary home until finally 2014-2015 it got refurbished and became a part of the city’s historic heritage. El Bunkers del Carmel is a must see place when visiting Barcelona also because of the beautiful 360° View. You can bring food and drinks to hang around and enjoy the sunset or sunrise however you like, it is a great place to spend some time. Enjoy the video!

Best View of Barcelona, Los Bunkers del Carmel (Ep.02)

Today we will visit one of the most unique historical sites in the city of Barcelona - Los Bunkers del Carmal, also know as MUHBA turó de la Rovira

11:12 - Panoramic view

MUHBA Turó, also known as the Bunker, is a former anti-aircraft battery site located at the top of Turó de la Rovira, an hill in the Guinardó district of Barcelona. Built during the Spanish Civil War between 1937 and 1939, it serves as a defensive position to protect the city from bombings.

After the war, the site was abandoned for many years until it got rediscovered in the 1990s. It was then restored and transformed into a public park and historical site that is open to visitors.

Today, the site serves as a museum that showcases the history of the Spanish Civil War and the role of Barcelona during that time. The museum features exhibits, photographs, and artifacts that help visitors understand the impact of the war on the city and its people.

In addition to the museum, the Bunker also houses an antenna that is still in use today as a part of the telecommunications infrastructure that serves Barcelona and the surrounding area.

The Bunker is not just a historical site, but also a place of cultural significance. The site is now a popular destination for locals and tourists alike, offering panoramic views of the city and hosting events such as concerts, art exhibitions, and historical tours.

The MUHBA Turó is a fascinating piece of Barcelona's history, showcasing the city's resilience during wartime and its transformation into a cultural hub. If you ever find yourself in Barcelona, be sure to add this historical site to your itinerary.

In this video I take you to the Bunkers of Carmel. It is an old relic from the wars and now a magical view point. You will see some of the best views of Barcelona from here. But know it comes at a cost. The cost is sweat and a leg workout. So make sure you bring water and maybe a little snack. The best time to go is sunset. There will be a bunch of young people hanging out and likely drinking. It's a really fun and beautiful place over all. I give a little info of the history of the area as well. Hope you enjoy.

Carmel-by-the-Sea is a romantic seaside destination, renowned for its spectacular sandy beach. This charming coastal resort captivates visitors with its enchanting village ambience. In a setting that's delightfully far removed from the real world, tree-shaded streets are lined with lovely Victorian buildings and little storybook cottages. Hidden passageways and quiet courtyards add to the magical Old World ambience. The fact that Carmel does not use numbered street addresses (GPS cannot pinpoint a specific location) encourages wandering. While tourists stroll around town, they'll stumble upon quaint artisan boutiques, cutesy one-of-a-kind shops, world-class art galleries, and inviting fine-dining restaurants. Local businesses cater to clientele seeking a pampering vacation experience. After spending the day at the beach or taking scenic walks along the coastline, the peaceful town of Carmel-by-the-Sea is a welcome place to spend a quiet night in a luxurious bed & breakfast or historic inn. Carmel is also a great starting point to explore nearby Monterey, just four miles away, or to take a drive along the stunning Big Sur coastline.

Bunkers of Carmel in Turó de la Rovira: 360 Degree Panoramic Views of Barcelona

The Bunkers of Carmel is located in MUHBA Turó de la Rovira hill in the district of El Carmel, with a height of 262 m, 360 degree panoramic views of Barcelona.

The bunkers are basically the place where the anti-aircraft guns were installed to protect Barcelona from air raids during the Spanish Civil War!

From the top, you’ll see
Barcelona’s famous landmarks such as Sagrada Familia, Montjuic Castles, etc plus the stunning views of the coastline.

Bring foods or bottles of drinks for a picnic there as you wait the lovely sunset.

There are many routes to get there from the city center, but we took bus 24 near Plaza Cataluña until the last stop, then a 10 min walk to the peak. Enjoy the great views of Barcelona. It was very wonderful, I just enjoyed the views with friends.

Thanks for watching, I hope you enjoyed it!

We are a couple who once fell in love with mountains and couldn't get back. So we decided to follow our heart and move from a big city to a small village to be able to do what we love and to create this content. Our goal is to promote the healthy lifestyle, to motivate people to travel more and care for nature around. We are passionate walkers who love hiking and trekking in nature. Now we're excited to start camping as well. We offer the detailed information of our hikes and routes, including the map and all the directions, so that you can repeat it if you want.
