Cowes is an English seaport town and civil parish on the Isle of Wight. Cowes is located on the west bank of the estuary of the River Medina, facing the smaller town of East Cowes on the east bank. The two towns are linked by the Cowes Floating Bridge, a chain ferry.

It gives its name to the world's oldest regular regatta, Cowes Week, which occurs annually in the first week of August. Later, powerboat races are held. Much of the town's architecture is still heavily influenced by the style of ornate building that Prince Albert popularised.
Industry in both Cowes and East Cowes has always centred on the building and design of marine craft and materials associated with boat-making, including the early flying boats, and sail-making. It is the place where the first hovercraft was tested. The population of the town increases dramatically during Cowes Week, the busiest time of the year for local businesses. The town was reported to be doing well in 2009, despite the economic downturn.
Cowes is a gateway town for the Isle of Wight. Travellers to Southampton are served by a high speed catamaran passenger ferry from Cowes known as the Red Jet. Southern Vectis' route 1 is the main bus service in Cowes. Single decker buses branded Red1 serve the Red Jet terminal, whilst route 1 double deckers serve the M&S Foodhall at Carvel Lane (the site of the former Cowes railway station). Both run to Newport to take travellers on to other island destinations. Wightbus also ran local services around Cowes and Gurnard until 2011. The Cowes Floating Bridge connects the two towns of Cowes and East Cowes throughout the day. It is one of a few remaining chain ferries not replaced by a physical bridge.
Cowes is the start of the Isle of Wight Coastal Path.
Cowes Park and Ride is a park and ride scheme on the Isle of Wight, featuring an 85-space car park and bus stop on the outskirts of Cowes in Somerton, on a former industrial site. It is currently served by Southern Vectis buses on route 1 every 10 minutes during the day.

Isle of Wight - Exploring Cowes in a day!
We took the Red Jet ferry from Southampton (UK) to Cowes in the Isle of Wight to see what the famous yachting town offered. Cowes is the centre point for the Cowes week yacht regatta which brings thousands of visitors to the small Island. It has many pubs catering to a variety of tastes from traditional to gastro and during the summer people, there is a real party vibe as people spill out onto the streets and beer gardens.
This trip was out of season however during the short period of time spent on the island I was able to explore the shops in West Cowes, the Floating Bridge, East Cowes promenade, Osbourne House and Queen Victoria's church - St. Milfred's in Whippingham as well as several pubs on the route!

Name
The name Westcowe was attested in 1413 as the name of one of two sandbanks, on each side of the River Medina estuary, so-called after a supposed likeness to cows. The name was subsequently transferred to fortifications built during the reign of Henry VIII on the east and west banks of the river to dispel a French invasion, referred to as cowforts or cowes. They subsequently gave their names to the towns of Cowes and East Cowes, replacing the earlier name of Shamblord.
The town's name has been subject to dispute in the past, sometimes being called Cowes, and then West Cowes. For example, a milestone from the 17th century exists, calling the town Cowes, but up until the late 19th Century the Urban District Council bore the name West Cowes. In 1895 West Cowes Urban District Council applied for permission to change the name of the town to Cowes officially, and this was granted on 21 August 1895.[5]
Whilst the name Cowes has become well established on infrastructure related to the town (including maps, road signage and postal addresses), the name West Cowes remained on Admiralty charts, used by sailors, until 2015, when it was corrected following a letter from a Cowes resident.[6][7]
Red Funnel, the Southampton-based ferry company that provides routes from Southampton to both Cowes and East Cowes, has continued to use the name West Cowes for the town in information and publicity and as the name for the town's terminal.[8]

Early history In earlier centuries the two settlements were much smaller and known as East and West Shamblord or Shamelhorde,[9] the East being the more significant settlement.
The Isle of Wight was a target of attempted French invasions, and there were notable incursions. Henrician Castles were built in both settlements in the sixteenth century. The west fort in Cowes still survives to this day, albeit without the original Tudor towers, as Cowes Castle. The fort built in East Cowes is believed to have been similar but was abandoned c. 1546 and since destroyed.
The seaport at Cowes, Isle of Wight was the first stop on English soil before crossing the Atlantic Ocean with many ships loaded with Germans and Swiss passengers leaving from Rotterdam going to the New World destination of the port City of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. These Germans and Swiss passengers were going to become British subjects in Colonial America, and the English captains made a written record of the stop in Cowes, England.[10]
Royal patronage creates a yachting centre
It is believed that the building of an 80-ton, 60-man vessel called Rat o' Wight[11] on the banks of the river Medina in 1589 for the use of Queen Elizabeth I sowed the seed for Cowes to grow into a world-renowned centre of boat-building. However, seafaring for recreation and sport remained the exception rather than the rule until much later. It was not until the reign of keen sailor George IV that the stage was set for the heyday of Cowes as 'The Yachting Capital of the World.' In 1826 the Royal Yacht Squadron organised a three-day regatta for the first time and the next year the king signified his approval of the event by presenting a cup to mark the occasion. This became known as Cowes Regatta and it soon grew into a four-day event that always ended with a fireworks display.

In Cowes the 18th-century house of Westbourne was home to a collector of customs whose son, born there in 1795, lived to become Dr Thomas Arnold, headmaster of Rugby School.
Northwood House was the home of the Ward family. It was donated under trust to the town in 1929, the grounds becoming Northwood Park. William George Ward was a close friend of the poet Tennyson and in whose memory the poet wrote six lines.
World War II and the Błyskawica
During an air raid of World War II on 4/5 May 1942, the local defences had been fortuitously augmented by the Polish destroyer Błyskawica (itself built by J. Samuel White in East Cowes), which put up such a determined defence that, in 2002, the crew's courage was honoured by a local commemoration lasting several days to mark...

East Cowes, Isle of Wight Walk: Town Centre【4K】
Located at the northernmost tip of the Isle of Wight, which is separated from the south coast of mainland England by the Solent Strait, is the town of East Cowes.
Geographically, East Cowes is situated at the mouth of the River Medina on the east bank, with the separate town of Cowes on the west bank. These two towns' unique names are speculated to relate to their shapes on the map resembling a pair of cows.
In 1539 Henry VIII ordered the construction of two castles on either side of the River Medina here to protect against invasions from continental Europe. East Cowes Castle was abandoned after less than 10 years, and nothing of it remains today.
A separate building, also bearing the name East Cowes Castle, was built between 1798 and 1800. The architect responsible was John Nash, who would become famous for his work on Buckingham Palace and Regent Street in London. Nash had made visits to the Isle of Wight from 1793, and in 1798 he bought land at East Cowes, which would become the site of the aforementioned building, which was a country house, complete with towers and turrets. Nash died here in 1835, and was buried at nearby St James's Church. East Cowes Castle (i.e. the country house) was demolished in 1963 following years of neglect.
Between 1799 and 1805 Norris Castle was built. This grand estate is situated at the northeastern end of the town overlooking the coast, amidst 225 acres of parks and gardens. Its first owner was Lord Henry Seymour, the Marquess of Hertford.
Throughout her life, Queen Victoria made several trips to the Isle of Wight, going back to her childhood years as a princess. In 1845 work began on the construction of Osborne House, about a mile southeast of East Cowes town centre. This was designed by Prince Albert himself, with Thomas Cubitt enlisted as the engineer. Work was completed in 1851. It was here, in 1878, that Alexander Graham Bell demonstrated an early version of the telephone to Queen Victoria, placing calls to Cowes, Southampton and London. She is claimed to have described the demonstration as quite extraordinary although the sound was rather faint. In January 1901 Queen Victoria died at Osborne House, aged 81.
In 1859 the first floating bridge between East Cowes and Cowes began operation. This is a chain ferry service, demonstrated in the walk just after the 5-minute mark. The floating bridge provides a regular service between the two towns both for pedestrians and vehicles, for a toll. Other public transport includes direct bus services to Newport and Ryde, and the Red Funnel ferry service to Southampton. Note that the ferry is for vehicles only, whilst a pedestrian ferry to Southampton is available from neighbouring Cowes.

Early history In earlier centuries the two settlements were much smaller and known as East and West Shamblord or Shamelhorde,[9] the East being the more significant settlement.
The Isle of Wight was a target of attempted French invasions, and there were notable incursions. Henrician Castles were built in both settlements in the sixteenth century. The west fort in Cowes still survives to this day, albeit without the original Tudor towers, as Cowes Castle. The fort built in East Cowes is believed to have been similar but was abandoned c. 1546 and since destroyed.
The seaport at Cowes, Isle of Wight was the first stop on English soil before crossing the Atlantic Ocean with many ships loaded with Germans and Swiss passengers leaving from Rotterdam going to the New World destination of the port City of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. These Germans and Swiss passengers were going to become British subjects in Colonial America, and the English captains made a written record of the stop in Cowes, England.[10]
Royal patronage creates a yachting centre
It is believed that the building of an 80-ton, 60-man vessel called Rat o' Wight[11] on the banks of the river Medina in 1589 for the use of Queen Elizabeth I sowed the seed for Cowes to grow into a world-renowned centre of boat-building. However, seafaring for recreation and sport remained the exception rather than the rule until much later. It was not until the reign of keen sailor George IV that the stage was set for the heyday of Cowes as 'The Yachting Capital of the World.' In 1826 the Royal Yacht Squadron organised a three-day regatta for the first time and the next year the king signified his approval of the event by presenting a cup to mark the occasion. This became known as Cowes Regatta and it soon grew into a four-day event that always ended with a fireworks display.

In Cowes the 18th-century house of Westbourne was home to a collector of customs whose son, born there in 1795, lived to become Dr Thomas Arnold, headmaster of Rugby School.
Northwood House was the home of the Ward family. It was donated under trust to the town in 1929, the grounds becoming Northwood Park. William George Ward was a close friend of the poet Tennyson and in whose memory the poet wrote six lines.
World War II and the Błyskawica
During an air raid of World War II on 4/5 May 1942, the local defences had been fortuitously augmented by the Polish destroyer Błyskawica (itself built by J. Samuel White in East Cowes), which put up such a determined defence that, in 2002, the crew's courage was honoured by a local commemoration lasting several days to mark...

East Cowes is a town and civil parish to the north of the Isle of Wight, on the east bank of the River Medina, next to its west bank neighbour Cowes.
The two towns are connected by the Cowes Floating Bridge, a chain ferry operated by the Isle of Wight Council.
East Cowes is the site of Norris Castle, and Osborne House, the former summer residence of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. The Prince had a major influence on the architecture of the area, for example on the building of St Mildred's Church in nearby Whippingham, which features distinctive turrets imitating those found on a German castle.

The Cowes Floating Bridge is a vehicular chain ferry which crosses the River Medina on the Isle of Wight, off the south coast of England. The ferry crosses the tidal river from East Cowes to Cowes. The first floating bridge between East Cowes and Cowes was established in 1859 and is one of the few remaining that has not been replaced by a physical bridge. The service is owned and operated by the Isle of Wight Council, who have run it since 1901. Prior to ownership by the local authority the service was run by The Floating Bridge Company and The Steam Packet Company (Red Funnel). The ferry currently used is named No. 6, the sixth to be owned by the Isle of Wight Council, and ninth in total. It was built in 2017 and can carry up to 20 cars. The Cowes floating bridge remains the only way to cross the River Medina between the towns without taking a ten-mile trip via Newport. The current vessel was built in 2017 and upon completion was installed on 14 May 2017. However, after a string of technical issues the service was suspended by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, and a passenger-only replacement service provided by a small launch. After several months of service suspension and intermittent operation, full service finally resumed early in 2018.

ISLE OF WIGHT ENGLAND TRAVEL VLOG pt. 1 ◆ WightLink, Osborne House, The Swiss Cottage, & Sandwiches!
[Filmed October 10, 2020] PLEASE NOTE: The Isle of Wight was in Tier 1 at the time this video was filmed, which meant there were no restrictions on travel apart from not traveling to other UK areas that were in higher tiers. We had already completed our two-week travel quarantine in strict accordance with UK govt rules, and we stringently practiced hands-face-space safety precautions.
With that, the UK is in a lockdown on the date this video is being released. As a result, some activities that you will watch us do are not currently possible, and we are not promoting that you do them until they are deemed safe in the future.

In this video, Derek and I wake up early to take the Wightlink ferry from our home base of Portsmouth to Fishbourne on the Isle of Wight.
Since we docked in Fishbourne before 9am, we grabbed some breakfast in East Cowes before heading to Osborne House when it opened at 10am. We had made reservations to tour the Victorian palace using our English Heritage membership when it first opened!
Derek and I absolutely loved touring the estate and the grounds while learning about Queen Victoria's daily life, relatable dog obsession, and her large family! The Swiss Cottage was especially charming for adults and children alike. I feel that Osborne House would be a great landmark to visit for people of any age!
Since we took so much footage on this day, the second half of our day-trip to the Isle of Wight will be released in another video later this week!
