Ayr is a large town and former Royal Burgh situated on the west coast of Ayrshire in Scotland, United Kingdom. It is the administrative centre of the South Ayrshire Council area and historic county town of Ayrshire. Ayr is currently the most populated settlement in Ayrshire and is the 12th most populous settlement in Scotland. The town adjoins the smaller town of Prestwick to the north, forming a single continuous urban area with the town.
Ayr was established as a Royal Burgh in 1205, serving as Ayrshire's central marketplace and harbour throughout the Medieval Period and remaining a well-renowned port across the Early Modern Period. On the southern bank of the River Ayr sits the ramparts of a Citadel constructed by Oliver Cromwell during the mid-17th Century. Towards the south of the town is the birthplace of Scottish poet Robert Burns in the suburb of Alloway. With the expansion of the railway during the 19th Century Ayr soon developed into a seaside resort. This remains the case today with tourism occupying a significant sect of the local economy in Ayr through the opening of a Butlin's holiday park on the southern headlands of the town and through the continued presence of the Gaiety Theatre, which ran various shows across the late 20th century attracting performers from across the United Kingdom.
Politically, Ayr is considerably more Conservative-voting than the remainder of Scotland, being represented by a Conservative MP continuously for a period of 91 years – from 1906 (as part of the Ayr Burghs constituency) until 1997. The town forms part of the Ayr constituency in the Scottish Parliament, the first Conservative constituency seat in the Parliament, which has been represented by Conservative MSP John Scott since a by-election in 2000. In the UK Parliament Ayr is situated within the Ayr, Carrick and Cumnock constituency.
Ayr is one of the largest retail centres along the south of Scotland and was recognised as the second healthiest town centre in the United Kingdom by the Royal Society for Public Health in 2014. Ayr has hosted the Scottish Grand National horse-racing steeplechase annually since 1965. The town also accommodates the headquarters of the Ayr Advertiser and Ayrshire Post newspapers and the West FM radio station.
The Ayr railway station has regular services to Glasgow Central station, Edinburgh Waverley, Stranraer, Girvan and Kilmarnock]. All services are operated by Abellio ScotRail. The town is served by the Glasgow Prestwick International Airport just 2 miles (3 km) north from Ayr, which offers regional and domestic air services across Europe and the British Isles. Ayr is served by three major motorway systems.

What are the pros and cons of living in Edinburgh? The city of Edinburgh is well-known for its medieval castles, the meandering lanes of Old Town, and the Georgian splendor of New Town. Edinburgh is a city that is nestled amid the hills. Despite its scenic appearance, the capital city of Scotland has a number of drawbacks, in addition to the numerous advantages it offers. Before making the move to Edinburgh, anyone migrating from another country will need to consider these factors.
The following is a list of some of the benefits and drawbacks of dwelling in Edinburgh.

1. Scottish people are so friendly
The Scots are known for being kind and welcoming individuals who are always eager to learn new things, and this is something that you will see the minute you set foot on Scottish land. Dumbarton Castle, West Dunbartonshire, Scotland
Dumbarton Castle has the longest recorded history of any stronghold in Scotland. It sits on a volcanic plug of basalt known as Dumbarton Rock which is 240 feet (73 m) high and overlooks the Scottish town of Dumbarton.
At least as far back as the Iron Age, this has been the site of a strategically important settlement, as evidenced by archaeological finds.
In the 1220s, the castle was a border stronghold – the Norwegian frontier lay just 10 miles downriver. The Treaty of Perth (1266) gave control of the Western Isles to the Scottish Crown, removing the threat from Norway – but an even greater menace from England soon replaced it.
Dumbarton was an important royal castle in the Middle Ages. In later centuries, Dumbarton Rock became a mighty garrison fortress, its defences packed with guns. It last saw military action as recently as the Second World War.
Dumbarton was a great fortress and the capital of a kingdom that covered the area now known as Strathclyde.
The Rock was besieged several times. The assault by Viking kings Olaf and Ivar of Dublin in 870 was by far the worst. The pair carried off slaves and looted treasure in 200 longships following a four-month siege.
Alexander II of Scotland built the medieval castle around 1220 as a defence against the threat from Norway, whose kings ruled the Hebrides and the islands in the Clyde.
In 1305, Sir John Menteith, keeper of Dumbarton Castle, caught Sir William Wallace and handed him over to the English for trial and execution.
The castle’s location away from Scotland’s political heartland lessened its importance somewhat. But it also made Dumbarton a good back door through which her rulers could come and go with relative ease. It sheltered David II (in 1333–4) and Mary Queen of Scots (in 1548) until ships could take them to France and safety.

Dundonald Castle Part 1
A castle on a Hill overlooking the village of Dundonald. Once you get up the hill you have great views on each side of the Castle. There is a visitor centre at the foot of the hill that has a café, souvenir shop and an interpretive exhibition. If you want to get in to Dundonald Castle you have to pay first at the visitor centre first....so don't make the same mistake that I did when I got up the Hill and then going back down again to the visitor centre to pay to get into Dundonald Castle.

Hi everyone. After my trip over to Belfast with BA Cityflyer, I decided to take a trip up to the north coast of Northern Ireland with NI Railways on one of their class 4000 diesel trains. Famous really for the Giants Causeway a little further along the coast, I'd never been to this part of the world before but, I tell you what, the coastline was fantastic. And what a day to make the trip - one minute it was blue skies, the next was sleet and storm clouds!
In this video, I'll show you all the sights and scenery along the way including a quick look at the coastline around Portrush at the end. We'll have a look at the train itself, some of the stations and I'll tell you what you need to know in order for you to take the trip yourself. If you're ever in Northern Ireland, I would really recommend this trip.

The countess left the castle in her will to King George V and the then Prince of Wales (who later became Edward VIII) in the hope of making Gwrych the official home for all future princes of Wales.[4] However, the gift was refused and the castle passed to the Venerable Order of Saint John. In 1928, the 12th Earl of Dundonald purchased the castle for £78,000 (equivalent to £4,700,000 in 2019), selling the contents to meet the cost.

Two waterfalls located where the Rideau River empties into the Ottawa River. The falls are divided by Green Island, with the Old City Hall just to the south. Were named by the early French for their resemblance to a curtain.
08. Chaudière Falls
A set of cascades and waterfall in the centre of the Ottawa-Gatineau metropolitan area where the Ottawa River narrows between a rocky escarpment on both sides of the river. About 60 metres (200 ft) wide and drop 15 metres (49 ft).

Gwrych Castle is a Grade I listed 19th-century country house near Abergele in Wales. The castle sits on a 236 acre estate that is privately owned. The Castle was built between 1810 and 1825 by Lloyd Hesketh Bamford-Hesketh (1787–1861), in memory of his mother Frances Lloyd and her ancestors. It incorporated an earlier house that had been in the ownership of the Lloyds since the late-medieval period. From 1894 until 1924, Winifred, Countess of Dundonald, the Hesketh heiress, owned the estate and it became the residence of the Dundonald family (family name of Cochrane). The countess left the castle in her will to King George V and the then Prince of Wales. However, the gift was refused and the castle passed to the Venerable Order of Saint John. In 1928, the 12th Earl of Dundonald purchased the castle for £78,000 (equivalent to £4,734,000 in 2019), selling the contents to meet the cost.
The castle closed to the public in 1987, and it started to decline. It was bought in 1989 by Nick Tavaglione, an American businessman, for £750,000. However, his plans to renovate the building were not carried out. As a result, the castle was extensively looted and vandalised, becoming little more than a derelict shell. On 13 June 2018, Gwrych Castle and its estate was sold to Gwrych Castle Preservation Trust, a registered charity, enabled by a grant from the National Heritage Memorial Fund. Due to the large cost of repairs and restoring lost content, the trust relies on volunteers or/and philanthropists who are able to contribute their time, experiences, knowledge and skills. In August 2020 it was rumoured that ITV had chosen the castle, for the filming of the 20th series of I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here! after the COVID-19 pandemic meant that the usual Australian location was no longer usable. This was confirmed on 27 August after Gwrych publicly confirmed this on their social media sites.

Cave Of Saint Ninian On Visit To South West Coast Of Scotland
Tour Scotland travel video of St. Ninian's Cave, with Scottish music, on visit to the South West Coast. Ninian is a Christian saint first mentioned in the 8th century as being an early missionary among the Pictish peoples of what is now Scotland. For this reason he is known as the Apostle to the Southern Picts, and there are numerous dedications to him in those parts of Scotland with a Pictish heritage, throughout the Scottish Lowlands, and in parts of Northern England with a Northumbrian heritage. In Scotland, Ninian is also known as Ringan, and as Trynnian in Northern England. Legend has it that this cave on the Solway shore was St. Ninian's retreat. A number of ancient crosses were found at this site, giving credence to this belief. The Catholic Diocese of Galloway annually holds a pilgrimage to St. Ninian's Cave on the last Sunday in August.
