Slovenia day Trips: Dolenjske toplice thermal baths ???? Dolenjska region and playing fitness chess
Dolenjske Toplice is a settlement near Novo Mesto in southeastern Slovenia and is the seat of the Municipality of Dolenjske Toplice. The area is part of the traditional region of Lower Carniola. The municipality is now included in the Southeast Slovenia Statistical Region. The town lies on the Sušica River, which joins the Krka 2 km north of town. It is a spa town known for its thermal baths established in 1658 by the Counts of Auersperg.
Name
The name of the settlement was changed from Toplice to Dolenjske Toplice in 1953. The historical German name was Töplitz.
Church
The parish church in the settlement is dedicated to Saint Anne and belongs to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Novo Mesto. It is a Gothic building that was restyled in the Baroque in the late 17th century.
More history:
«As regards thermal waters, there are some in Central Carniola that are so excellent that people come from far and wide to visit them.« These words appeared in the second half of the 17.th century in a book by the polymath Johann Weichard Valvasor and confirm that tourists have been coming to Dolenjske Toplice – still today one of the most popular spa areas in Slovenia – for centuries.
The first written mention of Toplice dates from 1228, when Henry IV, the margrave of Istria, bestowed part of his property on the Cistercian abbey in Stična. The thermal springs that give the town its name have been known since prehistoric times – something proved by the archaeological sites in the immediate vicinity.
Today Dolenjske Toplice is a centre of health, wellness and congress tourism and an area of unspoilt nature with a rich cultural heritage.
The driving force behind spa and wellness tourism is Terme Krka, which has been operating here for almost 40 years. Dolenjske Toplice´s latest acquisition is a Cultural and Congress Centre whose main activity is congress tourism.
The unspoilt natural heritage of the area includes the forest of Kočevski Rog, to the right of the town. The forest also conceals an important piece of historical heritage among its trees: Base 20, today the only open-air museum of its kind in Europe.
Other important elements of cultural heritage include churches, some of which were once important centre of pilgrimage. Sights in nearby Soteska include the ruins of a once-mighty castle, the garden pavilion known as the Devil´s Tower and a collection of old vehicles that come under the aegis of the National Technical Museum. You can also visit the Gottschee Museum in Občice of take a walk in Gottschee village Kočevske Poljane.
Summer is the busiest time of year, with a large number of cultural and social events (from May to September). The climax comes with the municipal holiday (22 July) and Topliška noč, the biggest and most important cultural event in the municipality.

Among Dolenjska hills, less than an hour's drive by motorway from Ljubljana and Zagreb, less than two hours from the sea and the Alps, lies Novo mesto. Surrounded by the Krka River it lies casually only on a panoramic photo. The metropolis of Dolenjska is growing, evolving, looking for new opportunities; in particular, it offers its residents a welcoming environment for both life and work, from hiking in Gorjanci, to the most modern pharmaceutical laboratories.
NOVO MESTO IN BRIEF
The Municipality of Novo mesto (Slovene: Mestna občina Novo mesto) is a municipality in southeastern Slovenia, close to the border with Croatia. There are approximately 37,300 people living in the municipality, with over 23,000 living in the town of Novo mesto that is the seat of the municipality. Novo mesto is the seventh largest town in Slovenia and the Municipality of Novo mesto is one of the eleven Urban Municipalities in Slovenia.
Novo mesto is the administrative, economic, ecclesiastical, cultural, educational, medical and sports centre of the Southeast Region of Slovenia. It is a hub of plentiful activities, which goes far beyond the regional framework.
It is recognisable by its exceptionally successful pharmaceutical, automotive, construction, textile and other industries, as the municipality is home to large companies such as Krka, Revoz, Adria Mobil and TPV. That is why Novo mesto is called “the export capital of Slovenia”.
The rich archaeological sites in Novo mesto have also made it known as Novo mesto – The Town of Situlae. Together with five other Slovenian towns Novo mesto was the European Capital of Culture 2012.
HISTORY AND HERITAGE
Historical frames are necessary in order to understand the present and optimistically look into the future. Novo mesto Kandija.Novo mesto’s history dates back 650 years, when Rudolf IV. von Habsburg decided that geostrategic advantages of the bend in the Krka river deserve city rights. Before Rudolf, the geostrategic advantages and natural endowments of the space around the bend of the Krka were already known to the Illyrians and Celts. The first known settlement of this area dates back to the 10th century BC. The archaeological site Kapiteljska njiva is one of the most important ones in Europe, when it comes to researching that period. On this hill, situated above the town, archaeologists have found situlae, remains of tools, weapons and other items, whose origin dates back to the Neolithic through to the decline of antiquity. The most famous excavations were dated back to the period from the 7th to the 5th century BC, when Hallstatt nobles were buried at Marof.
In the Middle Ages, Novo mesto was marked by Turkish incursions. An important line of defense against this danger took place right across the Krka valley, where one can still see more or less preserved castles from that period. Novo mesto was surrounded by walls, whose remains are still visible today. Some of these are the picturesque Breg area, part of the medieval wall is preserved in Šance and from this period are the former main entrance to the city - Gorenja (Ljubljanska) gate on one side and Dolenjska (Karlovac) gate on the other side of town.
During this period, Novo mesto was under the administration of the Habsburgs, who were aware of the geostrategic importance of this region in their efforts to extend its influence to the Adriatic Sea. Therefore, Rudolf IV von Habsburg signed a Charter on the rights to the city on 7th of April 1365, for which he earned a representation on the Novo mesto’s coat of arms.

Danes smo se odpravili v Dolenjske Toplice, ki so znane po svojih termalnih vrelcih. 1215 se za Dolenjske Toplice prvič sliši. V 17. stoletju Ausperg tukaj začne izkoriščati te tople zdravilne termalne vrelce, začnejo graditi toplice, tudi prvi hotel zgradijo. Danes so to resnično lepe toplice, ki imajo nekako tak romantičen pridih, na drugi strani pa čudovit hotel zvezdice, Balneo, zelo dober wellness in prekrasne bazene. Seveda pa Dolenjske toplice v neposredni bližini Noveg mesta imajo en kup znamenitosti in mi jih bomo danes raziskali.

The mighty, unconquerable and romantic Predjama Castle or Predjamski Castle has become, due to its location and secrecy, an inspiration to many filmmakers, as they filmed here a number of films, television series and documentary films. The author of the bestseller Game of Thrones found here an inspiration for his projects. At this location, documentary series creators from Discovery Channel also recorded a part about the presence of ghosts inside the castle walls. However, the Predjamski Castle is also very unique, because it is listed in the Guinness World Records as the largest cave castle in the world and the only cave castle in the world that is fully preserved.
Each year it attracts around one hundred thousand visitors from all over the world. Maybe that is due to the fact that Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle are very close, since the castle is only 9 kilometers away from the Postojna Cave and 11 kilometers away from the Postojna city. So, if you have already visited the famous Postojna Cave, it is time to go on a medieval adventure and visit the picturesque Predjama Castle.
Interesting facts about Predjama Castle
Predjamski in Slovenian language means “in front of the cave”, which is quite reasonable, because beneath the castle there is an entrance to the Cave under the Predjama Castle, where the first part of the cave is opened for guided tours. Also, directly under and behind the cave castle there are many secret tunnels, which were used in the past to supply food and other necessities, when the castle was besieged by the Emperor’s army.
Predjama Castle is perched in the middle of a 123-meter high cliff. This is also its specialty, which makes its powerful appearance. Building a castle in a rock itself also has its purpose, because they were using its unique position in order to successfully protect themselves from numerous Turkish invasions and the rest of the army that was back then raging all over Europe.
Predjamski Castle was first mentioned in the 13th century, more precisely in 1274. At that time, it was named after the German word Luegg, by the German family, who bought the castle. They were also known as Adelsberg knights, which is in fact a German name for Postojna. Therefore, in the past the name of the castle was Postojna Castle.
There is also a hanged prisoner in the dark room and, of course, the legend about Erazem of Predjama also lives inside the castle. The old linden, under which the Erazem of Predjama was buried, is standing behind the cave castle, at least so says the legend. A girl, who was deeply saddened by the death of this famous knight, planted the linden on his grave.
The legend about Erazem of Predjama
Knight Erazem was the most famous representative of the Luegg family. Only later he was known for his name, Erazem of Predjama, who resisted the imperial autocracy in the 15th century. Today, there are many legends about him, which on one side glorify him as a passionate, beautiful and noble knight, and on the other hand, they portray him as a robber, a rogue knight, who was ultimately killed on a toilet, inside the Predjama Castle.
The cave castle is accessible only from one side, but the legend says that knight Erazem supplied food and drink through a secret passage leading to the surface, inside the Predjama Castle.
