Facts About Dagestan
**************************************************************************
Dagestan, officially the Republic of Dagestan is a republic of Russia situated in the North Caucasus of Eastern Europe, along the Caspian Sea. It is located north of the Greater Caucasus, and is a part of the North Caucasian Federal District.
As the southernmost tip of Russia, the republic shares land borders with the countries of Azerbaijan and Georgia to its south and southwest; and borders the Russian republics of Chechnya and Kalmykia to its west and north, while having a border with Stavropol Krai to its northwest. Makhachkala is the capital and largest city; other chief cities are Derbent, Kizlyar, Izberbash, Kaspiysk and Buynaksk.
Dagestan is the largest republic in the northern Caucasus. Its tremendous ethnic diversity is attributed the combination of isolated valleys and its location at the crossroads between cultures in Asia, Europe and the Middle East. The largest groups include the Avar, Dargin, Kumyk, Lezghin and Lakh. Most of these groups are Muslims who live in remote valleys. Their neighbors have traditionally viewed them with hostility.
Dagestan has the status of republic in Russia and has its own constitution and official languages. Republics in Russia are the home of its ethnic minorities (those who are not Russians), and usually one or two nationalities have a majority of the population in each republic. But in Dagestan, there are over 30 different nationalities (the largest of which are the Avar, Lak, Dargwa, Lezgian, and Tabasaran), and none of these form a majority. This is because the mountains in the region make it hard for people to move around. These people speak 30 different languages, but use Russian as their lingua franca to communicate between each other.
Makhachkal is the capital of Dagestan. Located o the Caspian Sea, it is a dirty, depressing place, full of loitering unemployed youths and crumbling apartment buildings and closed factories. Guns are everywhere, the sale of illegal caviar and stolen oil are the biggest businesses, and about the only thing to do is go to the dangerous casinos and bars or visit the art museum, museum of history and architecture museum.
Sights in Dagestan include Tscoch, a 10,000-year-old settlement, believed to be one of the oldest in the world; Derpent, the home of a lively carpet market; and Kubachi, a jewelry-making villages. There are also ruined forts, mosques, folk art museums, waterfalls, hot springs and old churches. Travelers should beware of violence and disease are problems in Dagestan,

Türkiye İç Anadolu turu devam ediyor. Kapadokya Ürgüp gezisinde Zelve ve Derbent vadisi, üç güzeller peri bacaları görülmesi gereken yerlerden. Elbette Testi kebabı yemeden de dönülmez. Hititlerden günümüze Antik tarihin izlerini bu coğrafyada, farklı taş yapılar içinde izleme imkanına sahipsiniz.
Ürgüp, Kapadokya bölgesinin en büyük yerleşim yeridir. Ürgüp deyince ilk akla gelen peri bacalarının en meşhuru olan üç güzeller peri bacalarıdır. Kayıtlara göre yılda 2 milyon üzeri turist burayı ziyaret edip, bu güzellerle resim çektirmekteymiş. Biz arşivlerden öğrendiğimizi size aktarıyoruz. Üç güzeller, Ürgüp - Göreme yolu üzerindedir.
Ürgüp içinde bulunan açık hava müzesinde kayalara oyulmuş evleri dolaştıktan sonra, İsteyen temenni tepesine tırmanarak Ürgüp'ü tepeden izleyebilir. Bu arada eski popülerliğini kaybetmiş olsa da eski dizilerden hatırlarsanız, Asmalı konak olan yer gezilebilir. Temenni tepesinin yolunun daha ilerisindedir.
Ürgüp dışında Avanos yolu üzerinde bulunan gezilecek yerlerin başlıcaları Zelve ve Derbent vadileridir. Buralarda değişik şekillerde peri bacaları (bunların içinde en popüleri deve şekilli peri bacasıdır) ve tarihi yapılar, bolca eski kilise harabeleri bulunmaktadır.
Volkanik bir yapıya sahip Erciyes ve Hasan dağının patlamaları sonucunda şekillenen bu kayalar, sizlere sihirli bir coğrafya sunuyor. Kapadokya bölgesinin bir bütün olduğunu unutmayın. Avanos, Ürgüp ve Göreme üçgeni arasında Uçhisar kalesi, aşk vadisi, güvercinlik vadisi, paşabağları, zelve vadisi, derbent vadisindeki taş oluşumları, peri bacaları, çavuşin kaya evleri gezilecek yerlerdendir.
Kapadokya bölgesindeki her ilçede konaklama yapabilirsiniz. Tüm gezilecek yerler araçla birbirlerine yakın sayılır. Aracınız yoksa işiniz zor sayılır. Sabah balonların gökyüzünde uçuşlarını kaldığınız hotelin terasından izlemek isterseniz, konaklama yapacağınız yer Göreme'dir. Balonlar Göreme'den kalkmaktadır. Russians’ favorite travel destination | Breaking Down Stereotypes about Dagestan
Due to pandemic and the closed borders because of it I started traveling more around my country. And I'm really happy about it. Russia is huge and there so many kinda wild places. For example, one month ago I visited Dagestan, and it's a completely different Russia comparing to Moscow and St Petersburg.
If you are from Europe or the United States, Dagestan may seem wild to you. This region of Russia lives by its own traditions and laws. But nevertheless Dagestan is something from another planet. The beauty around you takes your breath away. It is impossible to resist and not try the local incredibly delicious cuisine. And when you see the local lezginka dances it's very hard not to smile and not start dancing.
Wake up in the morning on the coast of the Caspian Sea, and in the evening fall asleep in the mountains near the canyon. Go horse riding in the morning in the mountains, and a couple of hours later climb a cliff on an unsafe ladder. Try local hot pies and listen to stories about local life. Dance lezginka with locals and talk about everything with interesting people - this is Dagestan. And many more.

1. Security
Last September I was in Dagestan, everything was fine. Then in November I went to Europe. In Paris, an electric scooter was stolen, a glass was broken at night in the Port of my Starex on one of the central streets (-540 euros) in Spain, a phone was stolen, a new one was taken for 200 euros. There have never been any such problems in the Caucasus. As for the increased attention to women– it is also increased to men, driving by, everyone beeps or greets and asks how can I help? or do you like it here?, it's hard to imagine that in a second they will get a gun. It should be understood that we are guests with them, and a guest is sacred for a Muslim.
2. Clothing
Local residents in different regions look differently at clothing issues, and despite the fact that there is no official dress code in Dagestan, moreover, a remark to anyone about clothes is a criminal offense under Russian law - nevertheless, I recommend covering your knees and shoulders, this applies to men and women equally. It's more a matter of respect for the people you've come to visit. This does not apply to the beach by the sea.
3. Kitchen
I personally really liked the local curze with meat, it's like dumplings on a thin dough. Dagestan khinkal is not Georgian Khinkali, do not confuse it.
A miracle for my taste is drier than the khychiny in Kabardino-Balkaria.
Pork shish kebab is not cooked in Dagestan, it is cooked from lamb, not everyone does it well.
There are few cafes in the mountainous part and finding a good shawarma is often also a problem.
On the Caspian coast, on the contrary, this segment is very developed, in Derbent, Kaspiysk and Makhachkala there are a lot of delicious and spiritual establishments.
4. Visa
The Republic of Dagestan is part of the Russian Federation, as it turned out, this is not obvious to everyone. So you don't need a visa, there are regular flights to Makhachkala, usually a round-trip ticket costs about 6000 rubles.
5. The sea
Is the sea clean? Yes, it's clean.
Is there sand on the beach? Yes, sand, the entrance is quite shallow, you need to go in for a long time
Why then is the Caspian Sea not so popular? Upwelling is a phenomenon when deep waters rise to the shore by the wind. You can't guess in advance whether the sea will be warm or cold tomorrow, the wind will change – it can bring both warm water and cold, in my experience it's 50/50, half of the days when the water is warm, half when it's icy.
