10 Best Places to Live or Retire in Costa Blanca, Spain | Explore Spain

In today's Explore Spain episode, we share with you the 10 Best Towns and Cities to Visit in Costa Blanca, Spain.

Splendid beaches, delicious cuisine, vibrant nightlife and lively fiestas all make Spain one of Europe's best getaways. Because Spain encompasses several autonomous regions and islands, the country boasts one of the most widely diverse cultures and landscapes on the continent.

Costa Blanca is a stunning region that offers something for everyone, whether you're looking to relax on the beach, explore historic landmarks, or sample delicious cuisine. Its warm climate, beautiful beaches, and stunning natural scenery make it a must-visit destination for anyone traveling to Spain.

You can explore the long stripe of the Costa Blanca (White Coast), one of Spain's premier holiday coasts, popular with both domestic and foreign visitors. It's very busy in summer, with a lively social scene and great beaches. Even if that's not your scene, there are still several worthwhile destinations along this coast. Although the original fishing villages have long been engulfed by the sprawl of resorts, a few old-town kernels, such as those at Xàbia (Jávea) and Altea, still survive. Alicante itself has plenty to offer besides legendary nightlife, while Dénia is an enticing blend of a traditional fishing town, beach resort, and gastronomic destination.

MORE INFO ABOUT THE VIDEO ????
⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯
Spain is a complex country! It’s also a pretty easy going one. But there are certain things that you just don’t want to get wrong. And here they are!

11. Don’t go OTT on please and thank you.
In Spanish we just don’t use the words as much. We are more likely to work ‘please’ and ’thank you’ into the tone of how we speak, or by tweaking the words (such as adding “ito” to the end of a word).

10. Don’t put bread on your plate.
In Spain, you always leave your bread beside your plate on the table. It sites beside your cutlery, because it kind of is a piece of cutlery.

9. Don’t eat with your hand under the table.
I grew up with no elbows on the table. But here in Spain we also have the rule that you should have your hands above the table at all times. Because you might have a knife??

8. Don’t offer guests a beer at 5pm
Because we eat lunch and dinner later, beer o’clock is usually about 8pm… not 5pm.

7. Don’t help with the dishes after parties.
It’s just not something that’s done here. At the end of a party or dinner party, you might help tidy up slightly, but you don’t help do the dishes.

6. Don’t be a ‘pesado’ in social situations.
Chill out! Don’t ask people what their job is straight away when you meet them in a social setting and don’t expect people to cut to the chase when telling a story - we take our time here!

5. Don’t misinterpret loud conversations.
When Yoly speaks with her mother on the phone, it can get heated. But they’re not arguing - it’s just that conversations here often sound more intense.

4. Don’t generalise about Spain.
This is a highly regional country. So don’t assume that every region of Spain has the same language, customs or food.

3. Don’t call Catalan a dialect of Spanish.
Catalan is its own language - and don’t get that wrong (especially when speaking to a Catalan)

2. Don’t used ‘usted’ willy nilly.
Here in Spain we’re pretty informal and so don’t use “usted” unless we’re speaking with older people or in very formal situations.

1. Don’t mention the civil war casually.
The Spanish civil war and the dictatorship is a really complex topic, and still an open wound in Spain. So wait until you know someone pretty well before diving into the topic.

Denia ???????? Spain - Walking Tour January 2024 | Costa Blanca 2024

Denia is this absolutely gorgeous town tucked away in the Costa Blanca, right in the heart of the Province of Alicante within the Marina Alta region of the Valencian Community. It's like this perfect midpoint between the bustling cities of Alicante and Valencia. And let's talk about the weather – it's like a dream! Loads of sunshine, about 3000 hours every year, and temperatures that hover around a comfortable 25 degrees Celsius.

Now, picture this: the Montgó Mountain, this majestic giant that stands between Denia and Javea. It's not just a scenic marvel; it's a hiker's paradise. Exploring the trails of Montgó Mountain is an experience you won't forget.

And let's not forget the beaches – Denia flaunts over 15 kilometers of pristine sandy shores, and they've got the Blue Flag to prove it! Divided into two expansive stretches – Las Rotas to the south and Las Marinas to the north – these beaches are a coastal paradise. Sunbathing, swimming in crystal-clear waters, or diving into various water activities – take your pick.

Now, the Old Town of Denia is like stepping back in time. Full of history, it boasts the Castillo de Denia, a Moorish fortress from the 11th century. It's not just a historic site; it's a journey through time.
