The city of Cienfuegos preserves one of the most homogeneous urban centers in Cuba. It is full of classical facades and slender columns that provide an atmosphere reminiscent of 19th-century France, which inspired it. In fact, the city was founded in 1819 by a French emigrant, don Luis D'Clouet.
Cienfuegos is known as the Pearl of the South of Cuba and not a surprise, since this small city has managed to seduce travelers from all over the world. Travellers come to see the elegant mix of its cultivated French spirit and its affable Caribbean style. In the bay itself you can read a sign that says The city I like best, quoting the words of the famous singer Benny Moré.
Cienfuegos is open to the sea and is situated right on Cuba's largest natural bay. The whole city enjoys an enviable coastal environment, which, along with the tranquility that can be found in its renovated streets devoid of crowds of tourists, are some keys that have been declared a World Heritage Sites by UNESCO in 2005.

Cienfuegos can be divided into two distinct areas: the central area, where the Prado and Parque Martí are located; and Punta Gorda, a small territory that cuts across the bay and is home to numerous eclectic palaces dating from the early 20th century.
The most fascinating points of interest in the central area are the Parque José Martí, the Paseo del Prado, the Arco del Triunfo, the Catedral de la Purísima Concepción (Cathedral), the Teatro Tomás Terry (Theatre), the Colegio San lorenzo, the Casa de la Cultura Benjamín Duarte, the Museo Histórico Provincial (Regional Museum), the Palacio de Gobierno, the Casa del Fundador, the Museo Histórico Naval Nacional, the Cementerio de la Reina, the Museo de Locomotivas, the Malecón de Cienfuegos, the statue of Benny Moré, the Museo del Deporte. While in the area of Punta Gorda stand out: the Palacio Azul, the Club Cienfuegos, the Parque de Esculturas, the Palacio de Valle, the Centro Recreativo La Punta. Cienfuegos is a city that offers numerous activities to do. Due to its proximity to Trinidad they transformed it into an ideal city to visit during your trip to Cuba.
Undoubtedly, one of the best plans is to visit El Nicho, a couple of spectacular waterfalls in the heart of the Sierra de Escambray. To get there, you'll have to walk on trails and cross bridges but the reward is more than adequate. Besides, once there, you can refresh yourself in one of the paradisiacal natural pools.
If you want to get to know the spirit of Cienfuegos in depth, the best thing to do is to take a walk in the central Parque José Martí and discover the wonderful eclectic architecture of the 19th century that surrounds it, such as the Arco del Triunfo, the Palacio del Gobierno or the Catedral de la Purísima Concepción.
If you are looking to relax on the beach the best thing to do is to enjoy Playa Rancho Luna and its crystalline waters. A little further away, between Cienfuegos and Trinidad, you will find Villa Guajimico, a destination for diving lovers.

2022 04 25 CUBA - CIENFUEGOS - CASTILLO DE JAGUA & JARDIN BOTANICO DE CIENFUEGOS
Jagua Castle, locally known as Castillo de Jagua, is situated on a hill at the entrance of the bay of Cienfuegos, in the little village of Jagua on Cuba. Its full name is Castillo Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles de Jagua. Castle was built between 1733 and 1745 by the French military engineer Don Jose Tantete Duvillier, on orders of the Spanish crown, on foundations that are thought to have been built in 1729 by another engineer; Don Bruno Caballero y Elvira. The fort had to protect the bay against pirates that used to land there before the town of Cienfuegos was settled in 1819. Upon completion, Jagua Castle was the 3rd most important fort on Cuba, after the El Morro Castle in Havana and the El Morro Castle in Santiago de Cuba.
In 1976, Communist companions Cuba and the Soviet Union signed a deal to build a nuclear power plant in Juraqua. Construction on the first of two nuclear reactors began in 1983 with a target operational date of 1993. But a few years before the reactor's scheduled completion, the USSR collapsed. The flow of crucial Soviet funds ceased, 300 Russian technicians went home, and Cuba was forced to suspend construction on its badly needed power plant.
Lacking nuclear fuel and without the primary components installed, the plant sat in limbo until December 2000, when Russian President Vladimir Putin paid a visit to Cuba. Putin offered Fidel Castro a belated $800 million to finish the first reactor. Despite Cuba's reliance on imported oil for power, Castro declined. Project status: officially abandoned.
Today the unfinished plant, a huge, domed concrete structure, sits on the Caribbean coast, across the bay from the city of Cienfuegos.
The Jardín Botánico de Cienfuegos ( Cienfuegos Botanical Gardens ) are located in the outskirts of the city of Cienfuegos and are comprised of 97 hectares of land. There, you will find a marvelous tropical and subtropical garden with more than 2,000 catalogued species. It's definitely worth visiting the bamboo plantations , containing more than 23 different species; its section of cacti, with over 200 different species ; and the palm tree plantations, with around 280 varieties of plants from the local Palmera Real to the exotic Palmera Alcornoque .

Y hoy llegamos a la llamada Perla de Cuba: Cienfuegos
Esta ciudad se caracteriza por tener un maravilloso centro histórico y unos maravillosos monumentos en sus alrededores. También hay una imagen gigante de José Martí y un punto denominado el punto cero.
Nosotros decidimos subir hasta una de las estructuras más altas del centro y desde ahí encontramos unas imágenes que nos dejaron boquiabiertos.

La naturaleza de Cienfuegos es variada y abundante. Posee ecosistemas marinos, litorales y montañas de gran diversidad biológica, que condicionan su flora y fauna. La provincia de Cienfuegos tiene áreas protegidas en Guanaroca y el Valle de Yaguanabo con una gran cantidad de aves y especies de mamíferos como el cerdo salvaje, el venado y el agutí. Este lugar es considerado el banco de germoplasma más completo del país.
En el territorio de Cienfuegos, también hay algunos bosques naturales y áreas forestales. Uno de los lugares más bellos de Cuba es el sendero natural El Nicho, con docenas de cascadas y piscinas naturales escondidas en las montañas.La Hacienda La Vega es otro sitio con una impresionante atracción natural, ideal para conocer la vida del típico campesino cubano. Laguna de Guanaroca te invita a pasear por el lóbulo oeste de la bahía para descubrir un sitio extraordinario ocupado por una superficie de 202 km2 de área protegida. El Valle de Yaguanabo, al sur de las montañas Guamuhaya, es una de las áreas más ricas de la región. El río que lo cruza y que nombra el valle ofrece un paisaje de contrastes excepcionales, flanqueado por intensos colores verdes. Su ubicación entre las montañas y la costa muestra bellas imágenes del Mar Caribe.
You have to visit El Nicho for the waterfalls | Cuba Part 2
We went from Vinales to Cienfuegos and then from Cienfuegos to Trinidad. While driving to Trinidad from Cienfuego we dropped by El Nicho. Where we hiked through a rainforest (only 1.5km ) to two beautiful waterfalls and even gotten the chance to swim in them. It was an amazing experience and we highly recommend you to visit if you are planning to visit cienfuegos and trinidad, as El Nicho is between these two towns.
