El CASTILLO DEL MARQUÉS DE LOS VÉLEZ CUEVAS DEL ALMANZORA

Con la adquisición de este castillo del S.XVI en 1988 se recupera la pieza más importante del patrimonio histórico del municipio, el del Marqués de Los Vélez ubicado en lo más alto de la Ciudad de Cuevas del Almanzora.
El antiguo Palacio de los Marqueses se convirtió en un museo de pintura de arte contemporáneo, el de Antonio Manuel Campoy, único con su Sala Goya esunos de los museos más importantes de Andalucía.
Pedro fajardo construirá el castillo a partir de la torre de defensa o fortaleza que los reyes nazaríes de Granada tenían en esa zona fronteriza.
La torre construida posiblemente en el S.XIII, es de base tronco piramidal, con cuatro plantas, estando la inferior abovedada. Su función inicial fue la de vigilar la presencia de enemigos por sus alrededores, convirtiéndose como torre del homenaje cuando el castillo se construyó.
En el interior del recinto, adosadas a las murallas, se edificaron distintos edificios que sirvieron de residencia a la servidumbre y al contingente militar del castillo, pero sobre todo destacan dos edificios: la casa del Alcaide y La Tercia.
