Conisbrough Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Located in the county of South Yorkshire, and around 12 miles northeast of Sheffield, is the town of Conisbrough. Historically it was part of the West Riding of Yorkshire up until 1974.

The town's name is derived from Old English for 'king's stronghold'. At its heart is St Peter's Church, which is believed to date from circa 750 AD, which would make it the oldest building in South Yorkshire, and one of the oldest churches in England. The edifice underwent significant remodelling in the 12th, 14th and 15th centuries, and some restoration in the 19th century.

In the 11th century, following the Norman Invasion, Conisbrough Castle was built, and was the centre of a Norman lordship given by William the Conqueror to William de Warenne. It was rebuilt in stone in the 12th century, including the keep which remains largely intact to this day. The castle as a whole fell into gradual ruin from the 15th century following its abandonment. In 1819 it was featured in the historical novel Ivanhoe by Sir Walter Scott, who is said to have passed by the castle around eight years earlier. Today the grounds are open to the public, as is demonstrated here.

In 1849 the railway arrived in Conisbrough. Today it lies on the Swinton-Doncaster Line with direct trains to Doncaster taking around 10 minutes, and to Sheffield in around 30 minutes.

Famous people from Conisbrough include singer Tony Christie.

A visit to Conisbrough Castle

A visit to Conisbrough Castle, operated by English Heritage and a short distance outside of Doncaster in South Yorkshire. A lovely day, slightly overcast but no rain. Pre-booking due to COVID 19 was still required but the staff are helpful and if numbers are low in the castle they let you in early. More of a walk around video we see views from the old castle walls and from all levels of the keap. Views from the now upper area are amazing.

We noted several CL sites very close to the town but need to investigate exact locations. We had been interested to learn that an episode of Most Haunted was made in the castle, didn't find that out until we left!

Conisbrough Castle / Ivanhoe Location - Doncaster Yorkshire

Conisbrough Castle is a medieval fortification in Conisbrough, South Yorkshire, England. The castle was initially built in the 11th century by William de Warenne, the Earl of Surrey, after the Norman conquest of England in 1066. Hamelin Plantagenet, the illegitimate, parvenu son of Henry II, acquired the property by marriage in the late 12th century. Hamelin and his son William rebuilt the castle in stone, including its prominent 28-metre (92 ft)-high keep. The castle remained in the family line into the 14th century, despite being seized several times by the Crown. The fortification was then given to Edmund of Langley, passing back into royal ownership in 1461.Conisbrough Castle fell into ruin, its outer wall badly affected by subsidence, and was given to the Carey family in the 16th century. Its derelict state prevented it from involvement in the English Civil War of the 17th century and the remains were bought by the Duke of Leeds in 1737. Sir Walter Scott used the location for his 1819 novel Ivanhoe and by the end of the 19th century the ruins had become a tourist attraction, despite the increasing industrial character of the area.Conisbrough Castle was founded by William de Warenne, the first Earl of Surrey, who had taken part in the Norman conquest of England in 1066 and was rewarded by his father-in-law, William the Conqueror, with extensive estates in Yorkshire, Norfolk and Sussex. As part of these, Lord de Warenne was given the manor of Conisbrough, which had previously been owned by the late Harold Godwinson. The manor took its name from the Anglo-Saxon name for the settlement, Cyningesburh, meaning the king's fortress, and formed a large estate comprising 28 townships, centred on an Anglo-Saxon fortified burh at Conisbrough itself.

William built his castle on a rocky Magnesian Limestone spur surrounded by steep banks, and the fortification included a motte, an inner bailey protected by an earth bank and palisades, an outer bailey, and possibly a timber keep. The castle was located around 175 feet (53 m) above the river and would have dominated this part of the Don Valley. It was positioned directly opposite the village, which probably contained the old Anglo-Saxon burh.

The castle was held by William's son, also called William, from 1088 to 1138, and then by his son, another William, until his death in 1147. Conisbrough and the earldom then passed through Isabel, William's daughter, to her first husband, William de Blois, and then on to her second husband, Hamelin Plantagenet, whom she married in 1163. Hamelin was the illegitimate half-brother of King Henry II, who had arranged the marriage, and the union brought him great wealth. Hamelin extensively rebuilt the castle around 1180 to 1190, including constructing the stone keep; given his parvenu status, he probably hoped to reinforce perceptions of his new elevated rank. King John visited the castle in 1201.

Ivanhoe: A Romance (/ˈaɪvənˌhoʊ/) is a historical novel by Sir Walter Scott, first published in late 1819 in three volumes. At the time it was written it represented a shift by Scott away from fairly realistic novels set in Scotland in the comparatively recent past, to a somewhat fanciful depiction of medieval England. It has proved to be one of the best known and most influential of Scott's novels.

Is Coventry England Really Dangerous?

How dangerous is Conventry? What would you say if you were asked the question, Is Coventry, UK really dangerous? The answer would depend on who you are, what your biases are, and what you desire to see in a city. As a Coventrian, you are most likely to completely disagree with all that is being said about your city ranking as the second-most dangerous. Residents of other cities in Europe who are more favorably disposed to Coventry may stand that the city though dangerous is not as bad as reported. But let’s face it, in the first place, Is Coventry really dangerous? As usual, we will guide you into taking your own objective position after thoroughly considering our independent and unbiased answer to the question.
Excuse me, please let us introduce the city of Coventry to you.
About Coventry
Coventry is a city in the West Midlands region of England. This city which has been a large settlement for centuries is located on the River Sherbourne. It was founded and given city status in the Middle Ages and put administratively under the Coventry City Council. It was historically part of Warwickshire. Based on the 2021 census, Coventry had a population of 345,300. This makes it the 10th-largest city in England and the 12th in the United Kingdom. Coventry is also one of the largest cities in the West Midlands region, second only to Birmingham.
The city we’re showing in this video is 27 kilometers east-south-east of Birmingham, 35 kilometers southwest of Leicester, 14 kilometers north of Warwick, and 138 kilometers northwest of London. Coventry is actually the most central city in England; it’s only 19 kilometers southwest of the country’s geographical center in Leicestershire.
Is Coventry Dangerous at All?
In the first place, let us establish a fact. Before we go delve into comparatives, is this city dangerous at all? The admittance of the existence of a problem is the first step toward its resolution. A sarcastic comment is usually made when crimes such as robbery, and stabbing or a new burger joint or potholes are reported in Coventry. You’ll hear folks saying “Welcome to the City of Culture” as if all that is the real culture of the city.
But in truth, how many cities in the world can boast a zero crime rate? There are criminals everywhere and crime is part and parcel of our modern society. So wherever you find people, crime happens. We can’t, therefore, expect Coventry to be an exception. On the basis of that, we can say, yes, Coventry is dangerous with its own fair rate of crime.
We’re interested in the confessions of the residents of this city in question. An opinion leader in the city admits: “Yes, we have potholes. Yes, we have roughly one burger joint per square kilometer. Yes, we occasionally get voted among the most dangerous cities in Europe. But let's be honest, is it really as bad as any other busy metropolis?” We have the answer, though. However, that statement alone is an admittance of the fact that the city is far from desirable.
Ruing the frank comments of fellow Coventrians, he said: “For some reasons . . . some of Coventrians have this awful habit of badmouthing our city, kicking it when it's down . . .” He added that the majority of Coventrians reading those stories ranking their city badly don’t contradict that rundown. This implies that they’re silently corroborating those negativities.
Now that we’ve provided a clear answer to the question, Is Coventry dangerous at all? Let’s consider how dangerous Coventry is.
How Dangerous Is Coventry?

The Disused Conisbrough Railway Viaduct

In this video we take a walk and explore the Conisbrough Viaduct in South Yorkshire. A disused railway viaduct, now an accessible tarmac path.

Built between 1906 and 1909, it was part of the Dearne Valley Railway between Doncaster and Barnsley. it closed in 1966 and has been left ruined, abandoned and in a deteriorating condition for decades before being made accessible to the public around 10 years ago when Sustrans got involved.

Weather aside, we enjoyed the nice view of the River Don and Don Valley below, with view of Conisbrough Castle and the Cadeby Quarries.

The viaduct consists of 21 arches and one lattice girder span over the river. Made of red brick with a blue brick outer layer, it measures 465m long and contains 12million bricks.

If travelling between Doncaster and Sheffield on the train these days, look to your left before you reach Conisbrough and you will get a great view of the old viaduct.
