We Found the Fountain of Youth at Coamo Hot Springs

Tucked into the verdant hills on the southwestern side of Puerto Rico are the Coamo Thermal Baths (Aguas Termales de Coamo, in Spanish). Local legend says these springs are the ones that Juan Ponce de León declared Fountain of Youth, though I don’t feel any younger. The hot springs are supposed to help ease a number of physical conditions, including diabetes, gout, circulation problems, respiratory issues, and joint pain. We came for the mental health benefits.

The facility is small, just a small store, locker rooms, a shower and two thermal pools – one hot and the other hotter. You’ll also find lounge chairs and tables under large umbrellas around the pools, and there’s a spa offering massages. There’s supposed to be a café but we saw no signs of it, though you could buy cold drinks in the little store.

Nestled amid the beautiful shrubs and flowers are inspirational sayings to help soothe your mind. just wanted to sink into the warm water and soothe your anxiety away.
The price was unbelievably cheap - $5 a person (or $2 if you’re over 60). Bring your own bath towels; none are provided.

The drive up through the mountains from Ponce was lovely. Coamo is also the home of the renowned Coamo Half-Marathon, and the town itself has abundant recreational trails. It’s definitely worth a half day of your time if you’re seeking relaxation.

Coamo Hot Springs, PR

Baños de Coamo or the Coamo Hot Springs are located in the municipality of Coamo, they constitute the only hot springs in Puerto Rico. Used by the Tainos in pre-Columbian times, some locals believe that they have healing powers. The Baths became a very popular tourist attraction among the first Spanish colonizers, which would later lead to the construction of a tourist center by local businessmen. Coamo was the scene of a major battle during Puerto Rico's campaign in the Spanish-American War and was the target of artillery bombardments that damaged the complex. The historical and tourist baths were restored during the 20th century by the Government of Puerto Rico, once again becoming a popular tourist attraction.

????Charco La Oreja ???? Coamo, Puerto Rico ????????

The Coamo Thermal Springs Puerto Rico - Piscinas Aguas Termales Coamo,

Discover the Fountain of Youth in Coamo, Puerto Rico
The Coamo Thermal Springs (Piscinas Aguas Termales de Coamo) is another one of those natural wonders that makes Puerto Rico a pretty cool place. Located along a cold river in the town of Coamo, hot water springs naturally from the earth. For hundreds of years people have been enjoying these natural hot springs, which are said to have healing powers. And now, with the recent completion of a refurbishment of the public area, everyone can enjoy the springs in clean pools while enjoying other amenities.
Some History
The hot water has been found to be due to a dormant volcano way under the ground, that still contains super-hot magma. The water from the river finds its way through cracks and faults and gets heated by the magma and mixes with natural minerals and chemicals. As it works its way back up to the surface, it is naturally filtered and comes out as hot, sulfurous water.
The Taino and proto-Taino cultures enjoyed these springs for many hundreds of years. When the Spanish came, the Tainos told the Spaniards about these healing waters. Supposedly, Ponce de Leon misunderstood where the springs were located, and set off to sea to find the Fountain of Youth elsewhere.
Through the years, people have traveled far and wide to partake in these springs. In the mid 1800′s, the spring was diverted through pipes and a hotel and some pool structures were built to better enjoy the heated water. Today, the hotel is Parador Baños de Coamo.
Over time, these public pools had deteriorated, and were muddy and dirty. In August 2010, the town of Coamo completed the refurbishment of the public thermal pool. They are now lovely and clean.
