Places to see in ( Thornton Cleveleys - UK )

Thornton-Cleveleys is a conurbation consisting of the twin towns of Thornton and Cleveleys. The two towns formed a joint urban district from 1927 until 1974, before becoming part of Wyre. The two towns constitute part of the Blackpool Urban Area. The civil parish of Thornton became an urban district in 1900, and was then renamed Thornton-Cleveleys in 1927. On 1 April 1974, the urban district became part of the Borough of Wyre. Thornton-Cleveleys corresponds with six wards of the borough.

Thornton for Cleveleys railway station was formerly the principal intermediate stop on the Fleetwood branch of the LMS/British Rail London Midland Region railway, running from Poulton-le-Fylde, but it has been years since the station was used, and with the recent fencing-over of the level crossing in Station Road/Victoria Road East in order to prevent youths from congregating on the tracks, the glory days of Thornton are long since gone. However, a decision by an action group based in Poulton means they will finance a feasibility study into bringing the railway back to Thornton and Fleetwood.

Marsh Mill, a large well-preserved windmill, built in 1794, is a prominent landmark. It was commissioned by Bold Hesketh, uncle of Peter Hesketh (later Peter Hesketh-Fleetwood) who would go on to play a prominent role in the expansion of Fleetwood. Tragedy struck in May 1930, when a Miss Alice Baldwin and a Mrs Mary Jane Bailey visited the windmill with an interest in purchasing it.

A railway station was opened in Thornton in 1865. The opening of salt works at nearby Burn Naze by the United Alkali Company in the early 1890s (later becoming ICI) led to significant expansion of the village, with new houses and community buildings constructed. Thornton became an urban district council in 1900, surviving until 1974 when it became part of the Wyre Borough Council.

( Thornton Cleveleys - UK ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting the city of Thornton Cleveleys . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Thornton Cleveleys - UK

Walk Around Thornton Village

Join us for a Walk Around Thornton Village - the small village just off the A585, between the motorway network and the coast at Cleveleys/Fleetwood. Filmed on 15 December 2020.

The postal address of Thornton Cleveleys is two separate places. On a map it’s where you’ll find Marsh Mill windmill. Thornton Village, the one we walk around in this video, isn't far away, where the railway crossing is and the old railway station 'Thornton for Cleveleys'.

Thornton is another one of those Fylde Coast places where there are village shops and service businesses, much used by locals. It's a busy little spot, well used by people who live round and about.

Join us at the DIY Workshop on Victoria Road East, and walk towards the railway crossing, looked after by Poulton and Wyre Railway Society. Why don't you stop by and take a look?

Places to see in ( Fleetwood - UK )

Places to see in ( Fleetwood - UK )

Fleetwood is a town and civil parish within the Wyre district of Lancashire, England, lying at the northwest corner of the Fylde. The site of the town has been continuously inhabited since the Middle Ages. Fleetwood acquired its modern character in the 1830s, when the principal landowner Peter Hesketh-Fleetwood, High Sheriff and MP, conceived an ambitious plan to re-develop the town to make it a busy seaport and railway spur. He commissioned the distinguished Victorian architect Decimus Burton to design a number of substantial civic buildings, including two lighthouses. Hesketh-Fleetwood's transport terminus schemes failed to materialise.

Decline of the fishing industry began in the 1960s, hastened by the Cod Wars with Iceland, though fish processing is still a major economic activity in Fleetwood. The town's most notable employer today is Lofthouse of Fleetwood, manufacturer of the lozenge Fisherman's Friend which is exported around the world.

Fleetwood is located on the Fylde Peninsula, 8 miles (13 km) north of Blackpool, on the western side of the mouth of the River Wyre. The town itself is on a peninsula, almost 2 miles (3 km) wide, bounded to the west by the Irish Sea, to the north by Morecambe Bay and to the east by the River Wyre. Access to Fleetwood is thus restricted, and for many years there were only two roads into and out of the town. A large sandbank, the North Wharf, extends some 2 1⁄4 miles (3.6 km) north into Morecambe Bay, and is exposed at low tide.

Fleetwood's economy still revolves around the traditional areas of fishing, tourism, port activity and light industry, but since the early 1970s the town has continued to struggle economically. A government report in 2006 stated that three of the town's five wards fall into the 5% to 10% most deprived wards in England. The town's largest and most prominent single employer is Lofthouse's of Fleetwood Ltd., manufacturers of Fisherman's Friend—a menthol lozenge popular worldwide and especially in Japan.

The Mount and the entire length of Fleetwood Promenade has an uninterrupted view across Morecambe Bay, a view described by author Bill Bryson in Chapter 23 of his book Notes From a Small Island as easily one of the most beautiful in the world, with unforgettable views across to the green and blue Lakeland hills: Scafell, Coniston Old Man, the Langdale Pikes. Directly across the Esplanade from the Mount lies the Marine Hall and Marine Gardens, Wyre Borough's largest entertainment venue, opened in 1935.

The 13 hectares of Fleetwood Memorial Park was developed out of the earlier Warrenhurst Park, itself an early-C20 park designed by Thomas Lumb of Blackpool. In 1917 the park was renamed Memorial Park in memory of those who died in the First World War. The memorial statue was added a few years later and memorial trees planted by the children who lost relatives. Fleetwood Pier, also known as 'Victoria Pier', was a feature of the town from its construction in 1910 until it was destroyed by fire in September 2008.

( Fleetwood - UK ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting the city of Fleetwood . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Fleetwood - UK

Worst Places to Live in the UK – Blackpool

Is Blackpool really bad? That question begs our discussion in view of loads of negative reviews and low ratings of this large town in Lancashire. We found that it is the worst-rated town in the UK and we have discussed that in one of our videos. We have also seen that it's one of the worst seaside towns in England; one of the videos has highlighted that also. Blackpool has also been rated as one of the most depressed. Do all these mean that the town of Blackpool is one of the worst places to live in the United Kingdom? That is exactly what we are going to prove in this video. We shall be as objective as possible on this.
Blackpool’s Great Beginning
Our retrospective look at Blackpool will give us an idea of where the town is coming from. We can then take a more rational perspective when analyzing it as one of the worst places to live in the UK. We have to travel in time way back to days before the start of railways when seaside towns started growing. Indications are that the town had likely been settled around 11,000 years ago. A Roman coin believed to have been used around AD 80 was found in the town.
Let’s veer briefly into etymology and dialectology to exhume facts about the coinage of the town’s name. There was a great discolored water in that area a long time ago called ‘le pull.’ As the waters flowed along, it’d discolor streams draining Marton Mere and Marton Moss by peat lands. While running alongside this area, the stream created a pool.
Naturally, the stream would reflect the color of its water which was seemingly black. It was draining into the sea near the location now known as Manchester Square. Hence, the pool was described as black. The location of that black pool was named “Blackpool.” That name first appeared in the 1602 baptismal register of Bispham parish as ‘Blackpoole.’
The town was so famous in the past that the Squire of Myerscough, Edward Tyldesley, who was the son of the Royalist Sir Thomas Tyldesley, built ‘Foxhall’ towards the end of the 1600s, the first building in the area. How did the entire area fare in those days and thereafter?
Blackpool’s Year of Glory
Anyone that saw images— moving or still— or read about this town in the 1870s would howl and groan because of its current condition. Is this not the same town with four large and prominent hotels that the affluent and wealthy in the society beyond the town were patronizing? If there was anything like that, they could be rated 8-star hotels in those days.
The year 1846 came with an event that aided the early growth of Blackpool. It had to do with the ease of movement brought about by the completion of a branch line from Poulton to Blackpool on the main Preston and Wyre Joint Railway route connecting Preston and to Fleetwood. Blackpool gained tremendously from the losses this brought to Fleetwood resort.
As the town started growing, there was an influx of traveling to the town via rail.

Rising Sea Levels at Cleveleys - Fact or Fiction?

A little while ago we were presented with an opportunity to research stories of a petrified forest and sunken villages offshore from Cleveleys at the Fylde Coast. The report - Rising Sea Levels at Cleveleys - Fact or Fiction? - is available to read in full on our Visit Cleveleys website. It's an interesting question - take a walk with us at low tide to find out more. ???? Don't forget to SUBSCRIBE to the Visit Fylde Coast YouTube channel! Rising sea levels are much talked about today. Whether towns and places will be submerged and if so, when. Imogen Lyons spent the summer of 2019 researching the past offshore from Cleveleys. To find out whether it's fact or fiction she looked at geological reports, historical reports, literature and archaeological remains.

What did she conclude? Watch the video and read the article to find out!
