????OUR HOTEL RECOMMENDATIONS IN EACH SPOT
⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯
11. Santiago de Compostela. Hotel Pazo de Altamira is a lovely, modern hotel within a gorgeous old Galician stone building. And it’s right opposite the fabulous market!

10. Jerez de la Frontera. Definitely try and stay at the famous Hotel Casa Grande - a big old mansion with a gorgeous rooftop terrace for drinks -

9. Vera Valley. I would suggest staying in the village Valverde de la Vera and my pick is the cosy and rustic La Picota:

8. Cadaqués. I love Tramantua Hotel, a white-washed gem run by a husband and wife team… service is fantastic, and it’s right in the old city, plus near the beach:

7. Cáceres. We stayed at the budget but good Hotel Iberia Plaza Mayor with views of the square): If you want to stay IN the old city though, the Parador here is a 14th century palace - the full Caceres medieval dream!

6. Oviedo. Prices in Northern Spain are often cheaper, so you can happily get a great hotel here without spending a lot. Check out the excellent Barceló Oviedo Cervantes:

5. Zahara de los Atunes. Either go with Hotel Avenida Playa (simple, clean, and right off the beach - or the slightly more chic Hotel Doña Lola -

4. Las Alpujarras. Casa Rural la Fragua is a gorgeous little tucked away whitewashed apartment in Capileira (either stay here or in Pampaneira). This place is perfect for exploring the villages around the area.

3. El Rocío. I love Hotel La Malvasía with its old-world luxury, the fact it’s only a 5-minutes walk from the famous Santa María del Rocío church and they also have a terrace which is perfect for sunsets.

2. Mejorada del Campo.
Bus info: (take the bus from Conde de Casal). Don’t spend the night there. It’s a day trip. But my favourite Madrid hotels are below (in descending price order):

Pestana Plaza Mayor (right on Plaza Mayor and with a pool) -
Gran Hotel Inglés -
The Pavilions -
Vincci The Mint -
7 Islas -

1. Cádiz. Right in the old town, I love the wonderful Hotel Boutique Convento Cádiz, housed in a renovated 17th century monastery:

MORE ABOUT THIS VIDEO ????
⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯
Recently Yoly and I made a video about things you MUST NOT do in Spain. And it was really popular, as well as a little controversial.

So we decided to follow it up with something more positive - the things you have MUST DO in Spain if you want to have a truly local and authentic experience.

11. Read a great book before you come!
Before I moved to Spain, reading really helped me get a grip on this country and in the end have a much more local experience.

▶ BUY 'GHOSTS OF SPAIN' HERE:
▶ BUY 'DON QUIXOTE' HERE:

10. People watch during the evening paseo!
People watching is a real cliche, but it can be an amazing way to discover a place. So how do you do it right in Spain?

9. Explore the neighbourhoods as well!
Don't just limit yourself to the historic centre - hit the barrios where the locals are and see that side of life!

▶ Check out this video of a tapas crawl in our Madrid neighbourhood:

8. Explore lesser-known parts of Spain!
Of course you want to visit Barcelona, Seville, Madrid etc. But why not hit the rural areas? Or lesser know regions?

▶ In this video Yoly and I head to the beautiful rural Jerte Valley

7. Eat a menú del día in an old man bar!
These bars are full of locals who are going about their busy day and stop to eat a big lunch. Such an amazing way to get a glimpse at everyday life in Spain.

6. Make time for a lengthy 'sobremesa'!
Once you've finished lunch, be sure to make time to chill out with a huge gin and tonic!

5. Drink local wine!
Don't just still to Rioja and Ribera del Duero - make sure you check out local wines too.

▶ In this video Yoly and I head to rural Granada and drink local wine:

▶ My video to help you understand Spain's famous Rioja wine:

▶ My video to help you understand Spain's other famous wine region - Ribera del Duero:

4. Eat paella like a local!
First you want to make sure you eat non-frozen paella. But then, you also want to eat it WHEN the locals eat it.

▶ My video about Spanish food myths (incl. paella info!):

3. See an AMAZING flamenco show!
I'm not really into dance... but flamenco is so much more than that. And I adore it!

▶ My wife Yoly is a passionate flamenco expert and leads incredible private flamenco experiences. Check them out here:

2. Eat Spanish delicacies that scare you!
I'm talking blood sausage, sweetbreads and pigs ears. Get into it - it's the local food!

1. Talk to a stranger in a bar (or somewhere else)!
In Spain we very easily and quickly strike up conversations with strangers. So even if you don't have much Spanish, go for it!

WHO ARE WE? ????

⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯
It was once said that Spain is different. Well, it's no different from any other country, but like visiting any new country, when you don't know how the basic things work, it can be a challenge to get around and have a rich experience. So I decided to make a video which answers so many of the basic questions people have when they visit Spain. Here are some of the questions I answer:
- When do the shops open in Spain
- When do the tapas bars open in Spain
- When do the restaurants open in Spain
- What are tapas? How does tapas work?
- Do you tip in Spain?
- Do Spaniards take a siesta?
- Do people speak English in Spain?
- Is there bullfighting in Spain? Should I see a bullfight in Spain?
- How should I travel around Spain?
- How do people greet in Spain?

11. Don’t go OTT on please and thank you.
In Spanish we just don’t use the words as much. We are more likely to work ‘please’ and ’thank you’ into the tone of how we speak, or by tweaking the words (such as adding “ito” to the end of a word).

10. Don’t put bread on your plate.
In Spain, you always leave your bread beside your plate on the table. It sites beside your cutlery, because it kind of is a piece of cutlery.

9. Don’t eat with your hand under the table.
I grew up with no elbows on the table. But here in Spain we also have the rule that you should have your hands above the table at all times. Because you might have a knife??

8. Don’t offer guests a beer at 5pm
Because we eat lunch and dinner later, beer o’clock is usually about 8pm… not 5pm.

7. Don’t help with the dishes after parties.
It’s just not something that’s done here. At the end of a party or dinner party, you might help tidy up slightly, but you don’t help do the dishes.

6. Don’t be a ‘pesado’ in social situations.
Chill out! Don’t ask people what their job is straight away when you meet them in a social setting and don’t expect people to cut to the chase when telling a story - we take our time here!

5. Don’t misinterpret loud conversations.
When Yoly speaks with her mother on the phone, it can get heated. But they’re not arguing - it’s just that conversations here often sound more intense.

4. Don’t generalise about Spain.
This is a highly regional country. So don’t assume that every region of Spain has the same language, customs or food.

3. Don’t call Catalan a dialect of Spanish.
Catalan is its own language - and don’t get that wrong (especially when speaking to a Catalan)

2. Don’t used ‘usted’ willy nilly.
Here in Spain we’re pretty informal and so don’t use “usted” unless we’re speaking with older people or in very formal situations.

1. Don’t mention the civil war casually.
The Spanish civil war and the dictatorship is a really complex topic, and still an open wound in Spain. So wait until you know someone pretty well before diving into the topic.
