Feke Kalesi | Feke Castle | Adana Turkey

#FekeKalesi #FekeCastle #Adana #TaraGalaTayo
The area of FEKE KALESI or feke castle was settled by the Hittites in the 16th century BC, the Persians in the 6th century BC, conquered by Alexander the Great in 333 BC, and later passed into the hands of the Romans and Byzantines.

Feke commands a pass across the Taurus mountains directly north of Adana, and a castle was first built in the Byzantine period. The name then was Vahka and has since mutated to today's spelling Feke.

Beginning in the 10th century AD the Byzantine government forcibly settled Armenians into Cilicia to act as guards on the frontier with Syria. With the collapse of Byzantine rule in Asia Minor after the Battle of Manzikert it fell upon the Armenians in Cilicia to defend themselves and in 1097/98 they captured this castle and rebuilt most of the Greek fortifications. It became an important stronghold for the Rubenid barons, who later became the rulers of the Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia. It was captured by the Mameluks and then the Ottomans.

Below the castle are the imposing remains of a two-story early Byzantine church and a late antique/medieval town.[3]

The impressive circuit walls, towers, and vaulted chambers of the castle are positioned at the top of an elongated mountainous outcrop, primarily flanking the more accessible western side.[4] Sheer cliffs precluded the need for defenses at the east. The outer gatehouse, which consists of a winding staircase and an elaborate bent entrance, leads to the summit. Here there are cisterns, residential quarters, and embrasured loopholes for archers. Most of the exterior masonry is the typical Armenian rusticated ashlar with finely drafted margins.

Snake Castle from 13th Century by Drone: Ceyhan, Adana region of Turkey #yılankalesi

Built by King Levon of the Kingdom of Cilicia in 13th Century, this stunning medieval castle is in the Adana Province of Turkey. It is located on a rocky hill overlooking the east bank of the Ceyhan River. According to the wiki, the building is locally known to be the home of the shahmaran, a mythical creature half woman and half snake. I have seen this castle from distance back in the day when traveling by a minibus between Adana and Ceyhan and it was love at first sight. However, I was not able to visit until very recently while passing from the region. This time, I had my drone and was able to get some footage. However due to extreme heat and just being recovered from a long sickness I took it easy and didn't go up. I was also just learning how to fly the drone so it wasn't as good as I wanted. Until next time....

The castle is now in ruins, but it's still an impressive sight to see.

The castle is located about 45 minutes' drive from the city of Adana. It's a popular tourist destination, and it's easy to get to by car or bus. Legend of Shahmaran | Anavarza Castle & Snake Castle in Adana, Turkey

Hi everybody. On this episode I visit Tarsus city, Snake Castle and Anavarza Castle in Adana, Turkey which are the related with the mythical creature called Shahmaran.

What is it the Legend of Shahmaran?
Shahmaran is a mythical creature, half woman and half snake, found with different variations in the folklore of Iran, Anatolia, the Armenian Highlands, Iraq, and of the Kurds.
The name of Shahmaran comes from Persian words Shah and Maran.
Shah is a title used for Persian kings, mar means snake, but in plural mar-an means snakes.
In this mythological story, the first human Shahmaran encounters is a young man named Camasb.

Where is the Shahmaran story believed to take place?
In Turkey, Shahmaran is believed to live in the Mediterranean town of Tarsus and Adana region and a similar legend is told in the Mardin region, a town with a large Kurdish and Arab population.

Dutch singer of Iranian descent, Sevdaliza, included a song titled Shahmaran on her debut studio album ISON.
The 2023 Netflix series Shahmaran is also built around the legend in a modern setting.

Which castle is believed Shahmaran lived in?
Snake Castle in reference to local legends that stated the castle was the home of the Shahmaran, a half woman half serpent creature.
According to the legend a young man entered the caves beneath the castle to find honey but got lost in the tunnels.
There he found a beautiful paradise like cave with snakes and the Shahmaran living together (Shahmaran is Persian for “King of Snakes”).
The young man and the Shahmaran fell in love and the Shahmaran taught him the secrets of herbs and medicine.

After a time, the young man began to miss his old life above ground and left the cave, telling the Shahmaran that he would keep her existence a secret.

Camasb tells the towns people where Shahmaran lives, according to the legend Shahmaran says, “blanch me in an earthen dish, give my extract to the vizier, and feed my flesh to the sultan.”
They bring her to the town and kill her in a bath called, Şahmaran Hamam.
The king eats her flesh and lives, the vizier drinks the extract and dies.

Unfortunately, the Castle of Yılankale cannot easily be reached by public transit.
From the City of Adana drive east along the D400 (Adana-Osmaniye highway).
About 37 kilometers down the road you will be able to see the castle on your right, follow the brown signs marked for Yılankale up the hill to the parking lot.

Anavarza Castle

As the modern culture Netflix series, Shahmaran lived in Anavarza Castle.
Anavarza Castle is the most important of the chain of castles in Adana.
While Çukurova stretches along the endless plains, castles were built for communication and security purposes on very rare hills of the plain.
All of the castles such as Anavarza Castle, Kozan Castle, Tumlu Castle and Yılankale can see each other.
For example, the news of a ship docking in the Ayas (Yumurtalık) port can be transmitted from castle to castle.
The most important feature that distinguishes Anavarza Castle from other castles in Çukurova is that Anavarza Ancient City is located at its foot.
While other castles only serve as outposts/communications, this is a structure established to defend the ancient city at the foot of the castle.
It is estimated that the city and the castle were called Anavarza, which derives from the old Persian word Na-barza (Invincible), due to the 200-meter-high hill, which is one of the most prominent elevations of Çukurova.
Many parts and walls of the Anavarza Castle are still standing.
The castle, which was very difficult to besiege at that time and was built on a very steep hill, is still difficult to climb today; It can only be exited from the south or east part.
Anavarza Castle consists of 3 walls inside each other; There are structures such as military barracks, water and food warehouses, and historical churches between the walls.
In the innermost part, there is a 3-storey tower that can be reached by stairs from a single point.
