Places to see in ( Murcia - Spain ) Calasparra

Calasparra is a municipality in the autonomous community of Murcia, Spain. Calasparra has an area of 193 km² and a population of 9,700 (2004). Between 2004 and 2006 more than 2,000 British immigrants bought new homes off-plan, built on 3 new urbanisations surrounding the town, with more purchasing country homes.

Calasparra is situated in a mountainous region (400m) in the northwest of the province of Murcia. In contrast to the surrounding arid terrain, Calasparra benefits from being crossed by four rivers, including the Segura.

This has enabled the cultivation of Calasparra rice, for which the town is noted, and dates back to the 14th century. The population is predominantly Spanish, but other nationalities can be found here, particularly Moroccans and English.

Caravaca de la Cruz is a town and municipality of southeastern Spain in the province of Murcia, near the left bank of the River Argos, a tributary of the Segura. This city is the capital of the northwest Region of Murcia.

It is the Fifth Holy City of Catholic Christianity, having been granted the privilege to celebrate the jubilee year in perpetuity in 1998 by the then Pope John Paul II), along with Rome, Jerusalem, Santiago de Compostela and Camaleño (Monastery of Santo Toribio de Liébana). It celebrates its jubilee every seven years; the first being in 2003, when it was visited by the then Cardinal Ratzinger, later Pope Benedict XVI. In 2010 the second jubilee was celebrated, and it surpassed the one million mark of visits received in 2003. Festivities of International Tourist Interest since 2004.

Caravaca is dominated by the medieval Castle of Santa Cruz, and contains several convents and a fine parish church, with a miraculous cross celebrated for its healing power, in honor of which a yearly festival is held on 3 May. Caravaca is home to many monuments and museums, many of which are important tourist attractions. The hills which extend to the north are rich in marble and iron. The town is a considerable industrial centre, with large iron-works, tanneries and paper, chocolate and oil factories.

Besides being known by the Christian relic, it also has a festival in honor of it, held between 1 and 5 May of each year, declared of International Tourist Interest in 2004. Along with processions and parades of Moors and Christians, the celebration of Horses of Wine is especially relevant, which now aspires to be the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. The Neoclassical painter Rafael Tejeo was born in Caravaca. A gigantic archeological site was found in January 2009. It is composed of 1300 graves from 2400 to 1950 BC.

Cehegín: Walking Through the Historical Center of a Town in Murcia, Southern Spain

I explore the old town of Cehegín. The town of Cehegín lies in the South of Spain in the region of Murcia. The history of Cehegín dates back to prehistoric times. Historians believe that the origin of the name Cehegín is connected with the North African tribe that was called Zenaga, Senhaja or Senajeli and ruled the region in the 11th century.

Calasparra & Cehegin - Murcia

Calasparra - History (Wikipedia)

There were people living in Calasparra during the Bronze and Iron Ages.[5]

The present-day municipality was also occupied by people during the Roman Iberian Peninsula era as largely attested by several ceramic remains.[5][6][7]

There is archaeological evidence of the presence of people during the Muslim Iberian Peninsula era in the territory. A remarkable site is Villa Vieja or Despoblado de Villa Vieja, which consists of an ancient hamlet.[8]

Since the Moors' conquest of the Iberian Peninsula, there was an aspiration from some Christian kingdoms to conquer the Peninsula. The aspiration led to wars and also resulted in the acquisition of territories for the Christian kingdoms. The Kingdom of Castile obtained the Taifa of Murcia, the region where Calasparra was, in 1243 because the king of the Taifa felt under pressure and stipulated the Taifa to be dependent on the Christian kingdom with Castile in the Treaty of Alcaraz.[9] The Castilian kingdom bestowed upon the Knights Hospitaller the territory of Calasparra in 1289 as a reward for taking part in the Reconquista.[10][7]

Cehegin - History (Wikipedia)

The name Cehegín is sometimes connected by Spanish historians with that of the Zenaga, Senhaja or Senajeli, a North African tribe that invaded Spain in the 11th century.[4] The whole of this territory is layer upon layer of all the various cultures that established themselves here, the first settlers going back to 2400 BC. Reconquered by Alphonse VI with 1,000 horsemen and 11,000 infantrymen, Cehegín is one vast hilltop monument.

Cave paintings at Peña Rubia, a few kilometers outside the town, attest to the area being settled during pre-historic times. The town of Begastri, now abandoned, was settled during the later Bronze Age and was an important town during the time that the region was occupied by the Romans and the Visigoths. With the arrival of the Moors, the town center shifted to its present location at Cehegin. Remains of the Moorish city walls can still be seen, for example at the Puerta de Caravaca. The Archaeological Museum can also be found in the Old Town, where the exhibition include also small fragment of Attic red-figured pottery dated to the 4th century BC.[5]

Many conquistadores returned from South America with their riches and built large manorial houses in the Old Town. The Old Town has been revitalised recently by an influx of foreign (mainly British) buyers, who have renovated many of the older properties that were falling into disrepair.

Before it was given the name Cehegín, the town was called Bigastro (not to be confused with the district of Bigastro in the Valencian Community) and began to be an episcopal see when the bishop of Cartagena fled there after the Visigothic king Suintila (c. 588 – 633/635) destroyed that city. It remained a bishopric until Bigastro in its turn was destroyed by Arabs at the end of the 7th century.[6] No longer a residential diocese, Bigastro is today listed by the Catholic Church as a titular see.[7]

The pilgrimage town of Caravaca de la Cruz is located about 5 minutes west of Cehegín. Access to the town from Murcia was much improved by the construction of the C415 motorway in the late 1990s.

The Salzillo Museum is a museum space that is located in the city of Murcia ( Region of Murcia , Spain ), and is monographically dedicated to the works done by the baroque sculptor Francisco Salzillo .

Walking in the Murcia Region Spain #the3amigos #expatinmazarron

La Carrasca Sierra Espuna Murcia Spain
Check out Jackies (#the3amigos) video

Antonio, Jackie, Bonnie (my dog) and myself walked to a house called La Carrasca. The owner of the house introduced the mountain goats in the 70’s for hunting. Above the door of the house is a plaque, the original was stolen 15 years ago. It said - 1806, days 16,17,18, 19 of April was snowing incessantly, there were over 14 spans of snow in the opening, 33 mares died and a beef. The goat was released on the 18th day for two hours in clear weather. 25th of it snowed more.
The smaller plaque underneath was the owners - Mr Alfonso Ramon de Canovas and his wife.
Antonio had the key for the door and we all explored the house. We then went further up the Sierra Espuna to view the snow wells.
