10 Best place to visit in Cataño Puerto Rico

Cataño, Puerto Rico | 5 Top Places To See

Cataño, Puerto Rico is truly a land of possibilities. Sadly, it hasn’t lived-up to many of them. The town enjoys a privileged location across San Juan Bay from Old San Juan, the second oldest city in the Western Hemisphere. This alone should bring plenty of tourists to this tiny town.

The place is beautiful. Don’t get me wrong. And there’s plenty to see and do on this side of San Juan Bay. But there are so many untapped possibilities that it's simply mind boggling.

On this trip we picked possibly one of the sunniest days of the year to visit Cataño. The UV index was through the roof. But we were able to capture some of the most glorious footage of the bay that I’ve ever seen. Enjoy.

Cataño: Bacardi, Love Locks and a Fun Ferry

We took a ferry from Old San Juan to Cataño, across the bay, to see what’s there besides the Bacardi Rum Factory. Turns out, lots! Including shout-outs to autism, love, and love is love.

We strolled along the Boardwalk to Puente Rosado to the Pink Bridge, a pier recently created to give visitors a place to lock their padlocks and leave a piece of their love in Puerto Rico, and pledged our troth amid crashing waves. (Please don’t throw the key in the sea.)

On the way, we discovered the Muelle del Orgullo (Pride Pier), vibrantly designed with the colors of the rainbow to honor the LGBTQ+ community, and the Muelle Autismo (Autism Pier), painted in bright colors and puzzle shapes to celebrate neurodiversity and the autism community. As the parents of two queer, neurodiverse adults, we were happy to find this level of love and respect on our adopted island!

Across the street from the ferry, we found several bars and restaurants with water views that specialized in cocktails from the legendary rum maker. Of course, we had to try one!

But the best part was really the short ferry ride, offering expansive views of Old San Juan, El Morro, the container port, the cruise port and the mountains beyond. Lisa considers it the Staten Island Ferry of San Juan. Find out why in this fun video!

Traveling to Puerto Rico during Covid-19 || Visiting Cataño Puerto Rico 2020

Traveling to Puerto Rico during the Covid-19 pandemic? In this video I will show you Cataño, Puerto Rico. I visited El Malecon the Catano located in the North Easter part of Puerto Rico. It is a beautiful place with an amazing waterfront and it makes for an ideal spot for vacation in Puerto Rico. It's location is a short drive from San Juan Puerto Rico. If you are traveling with kids there is a park in the area and there is also a few restaurants near by. I hope that you guys enjoy this video!

** Be aware that this video was shot during the month of June and there are now restrictions before entering the island including providing evidence of a negative molecule test taken no more than 72 hours before entering the island.

If you are traveling to Puerto Rico check the Puerto Rico travel advisory for more information.

Top 10 Best Restaurants in San Juan Puerto Rico- Best Views, Vegan Food, Rooftops, Acai, and more!

Today we’ve got another really fun video as we take you along our journey of eating at our favorite restaurants in (and close to) San Juan. If you’re visiting the capital of Puerto Rico, we highly recommend also exploring as you often get better value, portions, and quality a bit outside the Condado/Isla Verde area. All of these have great vibes, so I hope this video can help you if you’re visiting the beautiful island of Puerto Rico!

Best Views- The New Reef, a restaurant and bar in Piñones an area with lots of local restaurants and music and dancing (bomba lessons Saturday nights), we love it because it is right on the water so you can see all of Isla Verde & San Juan’s waterfront

Best Food- El Nuevo Acuario, another restaurant in Piñones and this was by far our favorite food on the island, the appearance may seem deceiving but the seafood is so fresh and well seasoned, we recommend just driving through Piñones, which is only 10-20 min from Isla Verde/Condado and no matter where you stop you won’t be disappointed

Best Vegan Food- El Punto Vegano, so this restaurant is actually in Cataño which you’ll see we highly recommend branching out from the Condado/Isla Verde touristy areas to find the best food and prices; this restaurant has so many delicious options, including different pizzas made with yuca dough and the best loaded fries I’ve ever had; plus the dessert was amazing, couldn’t believe it was all vegan

Vegan Ice Cream- this little ice cream shop has lots of fun sundaes and the venue has a super cool vibe; there’s a bookshop, tattoo shop, and more inside!

Best Acai- this was a tough one and I love my acai so I decided to include all three and tell you a little about what makes each unique

Superfoods- located in Isla Verde, Superfoods is my favorite acai spot because they have lots of mix ins and add ons but also serve sandwiches and wraps too plus everything tastes super fresh, they also have little games you can play

Acai Express- this is our favorite chain acai store that comes with lots of different bases (coconut included) same vibe as Playa Bowls; they’re located all over the island, some even drive throughs

Crush- if you’re in Condado this is a great option in walking distance; I love that they have different smoothies that they can turn into HUGE bowls

Best Brunch- people RAVE about breakfast here, so make sure to arrive early as there's always a wait; our experience personally wasn’t the best but I think if there had been better service and we had gotten our french toast it would have been our favorite

Best Rooftop- my favorite rooftop in San Juan was Eter, located in Miramar, the restaurant and bar overlooks the whole city, it is pricey but definitely worth coming here for drinks

Best Oceanfront- Wicked Lily located in Condado for convenience; the views are stunning but the food is only alright, but I would definitely recommend this for drinks or their drag brunch on Sundays

Best Quick/Convenient- Tresbe, located on Calle Loiza, a street with lots of restaurants and bars, this little outside shop was the perfect option for our last night when we missed our flight, they’ve got lots of little bites like the fish tacos we got and a whole sushi menu (with a sushi burrito option)

Best Mountain View- D’Leite in Naranjito will take your breath away as you look down on the San Juan Metro area, it’s about a 45 min drive but well worth it to get out of the city and enjoy some great seafood, mofongo and views

Best Quick Beach Bites- El Clandestino, the vibe at El Clandestino is amazing as you’re right on the water and you have lots of small bites for a reasonable price; the restaurant is about an hour from San Juan but it’s a beautiful drive along the beach and has some super beautiful, much more private beaches like Playa Caracoles

Best Airport Food- Landshark, since we missed our flight and had to stay another day, we needed food at the airport and Landshark did not disappoint, we wanted something more filling than one of the little sandwiches at the stands and my fish tacos and Anthony’s burger were tasty and filled us up for our flight home at a very reasonable cost for airport food

Honorary Mentions:

Container Bay and Casilda- these two restaurants are in the same area as El Punto Vegano but they’re right on the water and both have rooftop bars; Cataño almost always has live music or some sort of event going on

Kumo- Anthony’s favorite rooftop was Kumo, located right on the beach in Isla Verde; it’s pricey and the portions were overall small but also worth a visit for the breathtaking views on the ocean

Casa de Campo Vista Verde- located in Gurabo about an hour from San Juan, this restaurant has beautiful mountain views and delicious eats

Cafè Licor- you’ve got to explore the mountains a bit and Orocovis is the perfect town to do just that, this cute cafe had tasty food and great coffee and awesome views, perfect stop before a day of chasing waterfalls and hikes
