This provincial capital boasts the largest number of protected spaces and castles and fortresses in Spain, and stands in a setting of olive groves.
Due to the pandemic, access to some museums and sites was limited or not possible with altered opening hours, or closed all together. Also, taking in Jaén in one single day may put limits to what is feasable.

Its origin as a centre for Arab caravans, its importance as a stronghold on the Castilian-Muslim frontier during the Reconquest, and its current role as a leading olive oil producer - earning it the designation of Olive Oil Capital of the World - all make this a place not to be missed.
The area was populated since ancient times, with remains of city walls in the Marroquíes Bajos site in the north of the city reportedly dating back in time to the Chalcolithic, roughly four millennia ago. Known by Roman sources as Aurgi, the city was seized by Scipio Africanus away from Carthage by 207 BC, in the context of the Second Punic War. Given the former alliance of the city with the Punics, following the Roman conquest the city probably endured a harsh time as civitas stipendaria. During the Roman Empire, in the time of the Flavian dynasty, Aurgi became a municipium. Following the Ummayad conquest of the Iberian Peninsula, the name of Ŷaīyyān was mentioned in Hispano-Arab sources already in the 8th century
The oldest part of Jaén is dominated by the Arab fortress that stands atop the Santa Catalina ridge. From this height visitors can enjoy one of the best views of the city and across the Guadalquivir valley. Santa Catalina castle is home to an interesting Visitor Centre with information about its history. Some of the oldest neighbourhoods in this Andalusian city can be found clustered around its base, radiating out from the churches of Magdalena, San Juan and San Ildefonso. But the main axis of the historic centre of Jaén is the Santa Iglesia Cathedral. This is a monumental Renaissance construction dating from the 16th century, which stands out from the profusion of whitewashed houses. The chapter room, the main chapel, the choir and the sacristy are all fine examples of the art of this period.
The streets near the church are some of the best places to sample the local gastronomy. Extra virgin olive oil, which can be acquired in any of three oil presses in the capital, is always present in one form or another on the tables of Jaén. Starters include pipirrana salad (with peppers, tomato and garlic), fried aubergines with honey, snails in broth, and local broad beans with eggs. Recommended dishes for the second course include kid fried with garlic, stewed cod, marinated pork loin and game. And to end the meal, the best idea is to try some of the sweet pastries filled with walnuts, or tocinos de cielo (a dessert made with only egg yolk and sugar) with figs, or any of the delicious sweets that can be acquired in the convents throughout the city.
The civil architecture of Jaén include gems as the palaces of San Francisco, today the Provincial Government building, and Villadompardo. Plateresque façades and colonnaded courtyard with Renaissance staircases are some of the most common features in this type of construction. The Arab baths are considered a National Monument, and still conserve their ceilings with star-shaped windows, horseshoe arches and delicate capitals. The Arab Baths Cultural Centre houses the Museum of Art and Popular Traditions and the International Museum of Naïf Art and offers a varied programme of exhibitions, concerts, lectures and demonstrations. Key areas to visit in the more modern part of the city include the squares of Plaza de San Francisco, Plaza de la Constitución and Plaza de las Batallas. Broad avenues lead to the La Victoria park and the Jaén Museum, which contains one of the most important collections of Iberian art in Spain. It also has Roman and Arab pieces and pictorial works from the last three centuries.

... pues su historia es bastante peculiar. Con la conquista del Reino de Granada los castillos del interior fueron perdiendo importancia y comenzaron a deshabitarse. Sin embargo esta impresionante fortaleza mantuvo su valor al amparo del cultivo de la vid. Casi todo su recinto está salpicado de viviendas en cuyos sótanos se hallaban bodegas para conservar el vino.

Su castillo, en lo alto de un peñasco desde donde se domina la población, será nuestro punto de partida. Veremos ruinas romanas, fuentes labradas del siglo XVI, edificios notables, y os contaremos quién era Juan Martínez Montañés. Hasta el Arcipreste de Hita y algunas de sus estrofas saldrán a relucir en su momento. Aunque para eso, tendréis que llegar hasta el final.

La silueta de Montefrío enamora al visitante que la contempla, no en vano la revista National Geographic ha reconocido a esta localidad el poseer una de las mejores panorámicas del mundo. Sin duda, pasear por sus calles y disfrutar de sus vistas es uno de sus grandes atractivos. La imagen de la peña coronada por una antigua iglesia y una fortaleza y a sus pies el pueblo es una imagen inolvidable, pero hay más atractivos en Montefrío y prueba de ello es que ha sido reconocida como Conjunto Histórico donde destaca su iglesia neoclásica circular. Y no solo patrimonio histórico y cultural encontraremos en esta villa, también su naturaleza es digna de admirar.

El pueblo que se hizo frontera, Alcalá la Real, Jaén
En el suroeste de Jaén rememoramos la conquista del rey Alfonso XI de la ciudad fortificada de La Mota, en Alcalá la Real, una de las más inexpugnables del reino nazarí. La ruta comienza en la vega donde estuvo instalado el campamento castellano, recorre los pasadizos excavados bajo la misma fortaleza, y termina en la plaza alta dentro de la ciudad amurallada. Un bello pueblo andaluz, con sus fachadas encaladas y coloridos geranios, juegan armoniosamente con el misticismo de sus calles empinadas, llenas de historia. Gastronomía, hospedaje en palacete y ruta senderista. Una aventura.

Circular Peña de Los Gitanos, en Montefrio (Granada), realizada con amigos en Ruta, el dia 19 de Febrero del 2022.
Una ruta muy poco conocida, que transcurre entre Cuevas, dólmenes, Necropolis y Ciudad visigoda, todo un recorrido por aquella historia.
Una ruta muy bonita, en la que nos acompaño el buen tiempo, que tuve la suerte de compartir con Amigos en Ruta, con Angelum (AndaryVer Montilla), Manolo Moreno (Caminando sin Rumbo, Carmen y Manu).
Iglesia de la Encarnación, Iglesia del Convento y Mirador de las Peñas. Montefrío. Granada
La Iglesia de la Encarnación, cuya forma está dominada por un círculo perfecto, se construyó bajo el reinado de Carlos III.
La Iglesia del Convento fue, como su nombre indica, originariamente un convento franciscano cuyos monjes debieron abandonarlo bajo la desamortización de Mendizabal.
El Mirador de las Peñas, situado en el interior del pueblo y desde el cual se puede contemplar una increíble panorámica del municipio y de las famosas peñas que lo rodean ha cambiado su nombre por el de Mirador National Geographic, en honor a la famosa revista de viajes por incluirlo en un reportaje sobre las mejores vistas del mundo.
