Girona Spain - Must Visit Attractions & Best Things To Do

Girona, located in Catalonia, Spain, sits between Barcelona and Costa Brava. It’s a gorgeous place to visit, with medieval walls, narrow winding city streets, and one of the best preserved Jewish Quarters in Europe.

All you need is one day to see the best of Girona, making it a great destination on even the quickest itineraries through Spain. Here are 9 great things to do in Girona…9 reasons why you should visit Girona, Spain.

#Girona #GironaSpain #GironaEspaña

#1 THE JEWISH QUARTER

The Jewish Quarter in Girona is one of the best preserved in the world. From 982 to 1492, Jews lived in Girona. The area where they lived, called El Call, is a maze of narrow, winding, cobblestoned lanes, still intact and very much like they were over 500 years ago. These narrow streets are a joy to explore. For those who want to learn more, visit the Jewish Museum in town.

Getting Here: The Jewish Quarter is located in the heart of Girona, off of Carrer de la Força.

#2 FOR THE BEST VIEWS, WALK ON THE MEDIEVAL WALLS

Also called the Passeig de la Muralla, a walk on the medieval walls is a must-do activity while in Girona. The city walls span the eastern border of the old town of Girona. From the top of the walls, the views over the city are spectacular. Towers periodically interrupt the walls for even better views.

#3 WALK ACROSS EIFFEL BRIDGE

Gustav Eiffel constructed a bridge in Girona just before the Eiffel Tower was built. Also called the Pont de les Peixateries Velles, this bridge spans the Onyar River and is the most famous in Girona.

#4 ONYAR RIVER VIEW

The Onyar River runs through the heart of Girona. See it from Pont Pedra, Eiffel Bridge, or one of several other bridges that span the river.

#5 WALK UP THE STEPS OF THE GIRONA CATHEDRAL

One of the highlights of a visit to Girona is a visit to the Girona Cathedral. The Girona Cathedral dominates the skyline of Girona. Perched on top of a hill, the only way into the cathedral is to climb the long staircase to the entrance. It’s a scenic spot and a popular gathering point for visitors to the city.

Are you a Game of Thrones fan? This cathedral was used in the filming of Season 6! Do you recognize it? If you do not, shame…shame…shame…

#6 GIRONA IS A HOT SPOT FOR GAME OF THRONES FANS

OK, so this came as a total surprise to Tim and I. Prior to our visit, I had read that the Girona Cathedral was used in Season 6 of Game of Thrones. As we were sitting in front of the cathedral, I did a little more research, learning that Girona was a major filming location for Game of Thrones. Girona is Braavos in Season 6. With the narrow, twisting lanes in the Jewish Quarter and the Girona Cathedral, this city makes the perfect backdrop for Game of Thrones.

If you are a Game of Thrones fan, Girona is worth a visit. Many of the filming sites here were used with very little computer generated imagery, so these places appear almost like they do in the show.

#7 WANDER THE CITY STREETS

There’s more to Girona than medieval walls, narrow streets, and filming sites…the city itself outside of the main tourist quarter is a joy to stroll through. Browse small shops, have coffee in a cafe, or just wander the city.

#8 PLAÇA INDEPENDENCIA

Plaça Independencia is a lovely square located just west of the Onyar River. If you are in the need of a break, stop here for coffee or wine and do a little people watching.

#9 GIRONA IS THE PERFECT DAY TRIP FROM BARCELONA

Girona is 100 km from Barcelona. It may sound far but the two cities are connected by a high speed train. If you are staying in Barcelona, in just 38 minutes you can be standing in Girona.

Take the train in the morning, spend the day in Girona, arriving back in Barcelona in time for dinner at 8 pm. Yes, Barcelonans eat dinner between 7 and 10 pm…it took us a little bit to get used to this schedule. The trick is to take that midday siesta…which may be a little difficult while in Girona…but that’s what the coffee break in Plaça Independencia is for!

Taking the Train: Barcelona and Girona are connected with the new high speed AVE trains and the TGV trains that continue on to Paris. In Barcelona, you can purchase your tickets at the Estacio Sants Train and Bus Station. Trains leave approximately every 45 minutes. We purchased our tickets the morning of our trip out to Girona and there were still vacant seats.

Places To Visit In Costa Brava: Tossa de mar, Blanes, Empuriabrava

Places To Visit In Costa Brava-Tossa de mar-Blanes-Empuriabrava
The Costa Brava is one of the most beautiful areas of Catalonia and probably the whole of Spain. Its coast is lapped by the crystal waters of the Mediterranean and its interior overlooked by the spectacular and mighty Pyrenees.
The Costa Brava is a 160-kilometre stretch of beautiful, rugged coastline in the region of Catalonia in the North East corner of Spain. Natural beauty, endless miles of sandy beaches and summer sunshine. You'll find modern, international tourist resorts with high-rise hotels alongside unspoilt fishing villages, sheltered rocky coves and medieval towns with ancient castles. The Costa stretches from Blanes, North of Barcelona, to Roses near the French border.
TOSSA DE MAR:
Tossa de Mar is a municipality belonging to the county of La Selva, in the province of Girona, on the Costa Brava so this is a perfect place to enjoy its beaches. In the bay of Tossa is a small promontory on the beach, in which a medieval walled city lies, called the Vila Vella, who has seven round towers. Its origin is estimated in the twelfth century and was built to prevent pirate attacks. Inside are the remains of a church and the palace of the governor of the XIV century.
A dozen fine beaches and bays (most notably Platja Gran, Mar Menuda and Cala Giverola) and the imposing Cadiretes massif, ideal for exploring on foot or by mountain bike, make up the privileged natural surroundings of Tossa de Mar. The historic centre of the village is dominated by a towering 12th century wall which encircles the quiet streets and the seafaring atmosphere of the Vila Vella.
Imagine a place where you can travel in time back to a former age…Tossa is a real open-air museum where prehistoric remains overlap with Roman Túrissa, medieval Tursa and today's Tossa, one-time retreat for artists and intellectuals and now host town for tourists and visitors. This heritage gives evidence of all those people who loved this piece of land and made it their home, from now on also yours.
BLANES:
Just 60 km north of Barcelona, Blanes extends for 4km along the stunning south coastline of the COSTA BRAVA. Rich with long sweeping sandy bays, little rocky coves, or deserted bays... If you like the wonders of nature Blanes has a perfect combination of nature, climatic conditions and topographical feature. The Mediterranean town of Blanes is a popular tourist hot spot for Spanish holiday makers, as well as those from other European nations. Blanes also prides itself in offering its visitors a taste of real Spain, with traditional fiestas & street, as well as the vibrant family friendly atmosphere with attractive parks and flower beds throughout the town. The nicest and most enchanting beaches you will find lie on the Costa Brava!! Beaches here have been awarded the European Blue Flag for cleanliness and clarity of water for several years running. The weather is in the main welcoming all year round. With average highs of 31°C in the summer months & 16°C in the winter, it is possible to enjoy an outdoor life at any time of the year. However be aware during the winter season low temperatures can be a good deal cooler than in Spain's southern regions.
EMPURIABRAVA
Empuriabrava (Ampuriabrava in Spanish) is one of the most unusual towns along the Costa Brava.Sporting nearly 24 kilometers (15 miles)1 of canals, and 5,000 private jetties, Empuriabrava is the largest residential marina in the world. They call itself “the largest Marina in the world “, an area with more water ways than even Venice. Whether this is a fact remains to be proved. Empuriabrava, however, has an immense number of canals, where boat owners have their own private moorings in front of their houses.Empuriabrava was built on a swamp in 1968 (at that time still Ampuriabrava). Today the place covers an area of over 503 hectares, about 10 % of the total area are canals or port, and this probably counts primarily for the popularity of the resort. From the tiniest boat to the biggest cruising yacht, everything can be found here.

Girona Province - More than just the Costa Brava

The province of Girona is situated in the autonomous community of Catalonia, and is divided into the three areas: The Costa Brava (coastal region), the inland region, and the mountainous area of the Girona Pyrenees.

The diversity of the Girona Province is immense; the breathtaking region of the Pyrenees with its snowy mountains, ancient villages and beautiful emerald valleys and the Mediterranean Costa Brava, with its beaches and coves of crystal clear waters, with their pine clad hillside backdrop. Finally the inland countryside, rich with crops, sunflowers and woodland areas; with charming villages, and of course the historical capital of the province, Girona itself.

The Costa Brava is one of the most visited destinations in Spain, but it is just one of the many jewels that you can explore in the province of Girona. Come and discover all of Girona's treasures!

Tossa de Mar Historic Town and Fortress, Costa Brava - ???????? Spain [8K HDR] Walking Tour

Walking around in the town of Tossa de Mar, Costa Brava, Spain. This video includes Binaural Audio ????. Put on headphones for the best and immersive experience. Click here ▶ to see highlights and guide.

(From Wiki):
Tossa de Mar is a municipality in Catalonia, Spain, located on the coastal Costa Brava, about 103 kilometres north of Barcelona and 100 kilometres south of the French border. It is accessible through Girona Airport, some distance north.

There is ample evidence of settlements dating back to the Neolithic period, and it is believed that the area has been continuously populated since that time. Between the 4th-1st century BC the first Iberian settlements appeared, followed shortly after by the Romans in the 1st century. In 966 Tossa was ceded by Count Miró of Barcelona to the Abbey of Ripoll. Some two centuries later, in 1187 Tossa was granted its charter by the Abbot of Ripoll, coinciding with the building of a church atop Mount Guardí, the remnants of which can still be seen today. Sometime in the 12th century the medieval town was walled off and a castle was built on the highest point of Mt. Guardí, this castle was to be subsequently replaced by a wind mill, and this in turn by a lighthouse which is still operational. By the year 1500 the first houses were built extra-muros to accommodate population growth. This process was greatly accelerated during the 17th and 18th centuries, shaping an urban configuration which was to remain practically unchanged until the arrival of mass tourism in the 1950s. In 1989 Tossa de Mar was the first place in the world to declare itself an anti-bullfighting city.

road bike ride in Riudellots de la Selva: Girona: Hincapie Loop inc. Els ...

Tour Details:

Over the years, this ride has come to be known as the Hincapie Loop, after George Hincapie, one of many professional cyclists who has at one time called Girona home. Starting at the stone bridge, we take in Girona's most famous climb, Els Àngels, followed by some speedy descending, to the picturesque medieval village of Monells, where a coffee & cake stop in the beautiful cobbled square is a must. We continue on through some rolling terrain, then up the Santa Pellaia climb - popular among pro athletes because of its soft, steady gradient. Views abound, over the Gavarres natural park, on both climbs. The descent from Santa Pellaia to Cassa de la Selva is fast but fun, and we come back in to Girona from the south, returning to the Barri Vell (Old Town) at the Pont de Pedra (Stone Bridge) where we started.
