A day trip on the PANORAMA ROUTE | South Africa

We recently did a day trip on the world famous Panorama Route in north-eastern South Africa. We visited four of my favourite places along the Panorama Route, namely: The Three Rondavels View Point, Bourke's Luck Potholes, Harrie's Pancakces and the Graskop Gorge Lift.

Graskop Gorge Lift Co:
Harrie's Pancakes in Graskop:

The Three Rondavels is arguably the most beautiful view point along the whole Panorama Route and close to the northern tip of the route, about an hour and a half's drive from Hoedspruit. From the view point you look down over the Blyde River Canyon - the third largest canyon in the world after the Grand Canyon and the Fish River Canyon.

From The Three Rondavels we drove south to Bourke's Luck Potholes, which are stunning geological formations in the Blyde River Canyon at the confluence of the Blyde- and Treur rivers. I hadn't been there since I was 12 years old and it was wonderful to experience it again.

Afterwards, we grabbed some lunch at Harrie's Pancakes in Graskop before heading to the Graskop Gorge Lift Company just south of town. Here we took the lift 51 meters into the gorge below, where a series of walkways and suspension bridges lead us 600m through the indigenous forest. It really is a world class facility, with plenty of excellent and informative information boards along the way. Even though I've never been there, it felt like I was walking in a jungle in Costa Rica!

If you visit South Africa's Kruger National Park or other parts of the Lowveld, you simply have to visit the Panorama Route!

Northern Cape - South Africa

This directory on the Northern Cape covers information from advertisers on accommodation, activities, restaurants and businesses.

The province is situated to the south of the powerful Orange River which provides the province with its good agricultural system. The Northern Cape is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean in the west with Namibia to the north and Botswana to the north-west. The Swartberg mountain range forms part of its southern border.

The Northern Cape is South Africa’s largest province taking up about a third of the country’s total land area. The capital of the province is Kimberley - a diverse and interesting city. The province is easily accessible with two major airports situated at Kimberley and Upington and has a good road network.

The central areas of the Northern Cape are generally flat and combined with salt pans. The Karoo rocks are sprinkled with kimberlite providing the province with its most precious held diamonds.

Sutherland, a popular if bitterly cold winter town is popular with stargazers as it boasts the southern hemisphere’s largest astronomical observatory, the sponsored Southern African Large Telescope. Many keen budding and hobby astrologers flock to Sutherland to see the stars from clear skies.

The Northern Cape is home to many national parks and conservation areas including the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park (an international park shared with Botswana), Ai-Ais-Richtersveld Transfrontier Conservation Park and Augrabies Falls National Park. Wonderlands of flora, fauna and birdlife.

A great deal of the Northern Cape lies in the dry Nama-Karoo Biome which is home to several interesting plants such as the elephant’s trunk tree; including a variety of succulents. The province is famous for its spectacular array of florals in spring, which attracts thousands of tourists from far and wide each year to the Namaqualand region.

The Northern Cape is a thriving agricultural region especially in the Orange River Valley. A variety of fruit is cultivated in Upington and the Kakamas while the Karoo area depends on sheep farming.
Things to do and see in the Northern Cape

The vast terrain of the Northern Cape lends itself to 4x4’ing motor-biking and other off-road activities. The Orange River is at its most impressive at Augrabies Falls when the river cascades over a granite plateau approximately 191m down into a 43m pool – a spectacular sight to behold. The Northern Cape has a history immersed in San rock art with cave sites including Wonderwerk Cave near Kuruman. An area favoured by keen archaeologists the site dates back nearly a million years.

Some of the activities to do in the Northern Cape are as follows:

hiking
mountain biking
quad biking
donkey cart rides
horseriding
canoeing on the Orange River

Namaqualand Flowers

Every year in springtime the Namaqualand bursts into bloom with its amazing displays of wild flowers. It is after the season’s first rains that the arid desert suddenly springs to life in an endless submersion of colour and scent. At this time of year the Northern Cape is inundated by tourists and photographers wanting to capture this magnificent moment in time.
The Northern Cape’s Diamond Fields

The Northern Cape - a diamond delight ...

Diamonds were first discovered in this area in the 19th century which sparked mass diggings and diamond-fever for many years. All this manic behaviour led to what is now known as the Big Hole, the largest artificial construction found in the world. This fantastic display can be viewed from a viewing platform at the Kimberley Mine Museum, a fascinating open-air museum.
Accommodation in the Northern Cape

Tourists will be delighted by the amount of accommodation options in this province. The distance between the towns are quite long and therefore rest-stops are recommended. There are bed and breakfasts, hotels, self-catering cottages and backpackers.

The regions covered in the Northern Cape are:

Diamond Fields
Green Kalahari
Kalahari
Karoo
Namakwa

Each with their own style of accommodation - the directory of advertisers provides extensive options.

S1 – Ep 155 – Vosburg – We Found the Fun Pan where they Race!

After our amazing lunch at Die Ketel, we decided to go and find the Fun Pan which is about 10km outside of Vosburg. We were shocked and surprised to see how big it was! This is the place where the locals from the whole district come to race with their cars once a year. We heard about the Fun Pan in Victoria West and were hoping to find it. The next morning before leaving the area I was given a tour of the museum by our host. It's a small, but really interesting place to visit. I loved the old glass hearse which is so unique and still in such good shape. On our way out of town we stopped to see the Vosburg Dam and the water points where the town gets their water from. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #vosburg #funpan #dieketel

⭐ About Postcard & A Pint:
Welcome to the official Postcard & A Pint YouTube channel.
Postcard & A Pint was thought up by my partner, Rachel & myself, Wills one day while taking our daily 1 hour exercise during the lockdown of 2020. All of a sudden, we were spending more time together, not working 6 or 7 days a week in the arts industry, and binge watching travel programs, and we were actually really enjoying it, and it made us re-evaluate what was important in life for us. Now back to working 6 or 7 days a week again, with very little time off, our happy time is getting out there on our brief times off together and making short travel videos that we are now sharing with you. It's just a bit of fun, and great for our sanity. Your support is hugely appreciated x

S1 – Ep 175 – De Rust – A Picturesque Klein Karoo Village South of Meiringspoort!

Having just gone through the stunningly beautiful Meringspoort, we had the privilege of staying over at Meijer’s Rust. What an awesome place just outside De Rust! The next morning after joining the farmer for a short while to move his cattle to another grazing field, we left the farm and headed for the picturesque Klein Karoo village of De Rust. Yet another small town which is doing so well for itself. The old Victorian style houses are all so neat, the gardens are wonderful and the people are very warm and friendly. Driving through De Rust we could see how it was nestled between the majestic Swartberg and Kammanassie mountains on the scenic Route 62. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #derust #karoo #meiringspoort #village

Riemvasmaak Hot Springs Northern Cape South Africa

I had the privilege of visiting the remote village of Riemvasmaak in the dry, inhospitable far Northern Cape of South Africa. Riemvasmaak is located near the Orange River, close to the Namibian border.

It was originally settled in the early 1930s by people of Xhosa, Damara, Herero, Nama, and Coloured origin, but in the early 1970s the community was sent back to their ethnic homelands, some of them to Namibia, to make way for a military testing site. The area remained under the military's control until 1994, when a process of land restitution allowed the return of families and communities.

It's remote, barren and dry, and if solitude is what you're looking for, it probably doesn't get any better.

S1 – Ep 150 – Victoria West – The Diamond Way between Cape Town and Kimberley!

After our stuck-in-the-mud experience on the Bokpoort road we took the tar road to Victoria West. It was interesting to learn that it marked the beginning of the Diamond Way between Cape Town and Kimberley. As we approached Victoria West, we saw beautiful pink flamingos on the dam just before town and they did a fly-by just for us. On entering the town, we could sense the rich history. Our stay at Merino Junction in the centre of town was fabulous. We rarely stay in hotels, so this was special. The food was amazing and not to mention our warm and cozy room. The next morning we were up early and ready to explore the rest of the town. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #bokpoort #victoriawest #merinojunction,

S1 – Ep 185 – Hofmeyr – A Pretty Town close to the Bamboes Mountains!

Hofmeyr is yet another pretty Eastern Cape Karoo town which we enjoyed visiting. This town is very close to the Bamboes Mountain Range and its original name was Maraisburg and later renamed after Jan Hofmeyr. While driving around we found the Anglo Boer War Memorial in the park as well as the Great Trek centenary celebratory pyramid which was in the same park in the centre of town. Then it was time for us to leave this beautiful town and find our accommodation at Waterlea-on-River Tented Cabins about 35km from Hofmeyr. What an amazing stay we had, on the river in a fancy tent! The next morning, we unfortunately had to leave for our next destination. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #hofmeyr #bamboes #mountains #karoo

S1 – Ep 220 – Philippolis – A Little Town Situated in the Middle of South Africa!

The gravel road I had planned to take from Vanderkloof Dam to Philippolis was closed to the public so we had to take a detour of almost 200km to reach our destination, which meant we would only arrive in the dark. This actually gave us the opportunity to see this little town in a different light to how we normally see the places we visit. Since we arrived too late to explore, we booked into our accommodation at the Philippolis Hotel for the night, enjoyed pizza for supper and woke up ready for a day to explore. Situated in the middle of South Africa, this amazing town has a rich history and so many places of interest. We made it our mission to try and find as many as possible! #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #philippolis #freestate #orangeriver #northerncape

Tankwa Karoo National Park; one of South Africa's most underrated destinations

The Karoo is as big as Germany and harbors over 100 villages, towns, settlements and a couple of railway sidings. Despite the proliferation of modernity in this area, the human population is still as sparse as it was back in the 1900s, effectively giving the Karoo an enticing rural feel.

Tankwa has gained popularity as the home of Afrikaburn. Find out more about this underrated destination here:

First ever Geocaching event in Carnarvon, Northern cape.

30 September 2023 was the first ever Geocaching event in Carnarvon, Northern cape, South Africa. It was a meet and greet and one of the guests, was the Chairperson of Geocaching of South Africa (Uncle Chem). As soon as everyone sat around the table, he starts talking about and explaining Geocaching. Unplanned he did a great job to help our newbie of 5 finds and the rest of us with 40+ finds to get even more information. Thanks again to Uncle Chem for helping us understand Geocaching better and giving us awesome ideas.
Our newbie here has a project called Forgotten Highway, so she was explaining how Geocaching was so amazing for showing and learning everyone of new and historic places/areas.
