Bienvenido and welcome to Murcia! This region is sandwiched between Valencia and Andalusia, and has a ton of awesome stuff to do. So I'm going to show you my top ten favorite things to do in Murcia. Come on, let's go!
1) Beaches
With over 250km of coast, there are all kinds of amazing beaches and costal scenery, to be enjoyed year round. Thanks to 300 days of sun a year and an average temperature of 19 degrees Celcius.
2) Adventure
In the region of Murcia, there is no shortage of adventure activities. From hiking in the rugged mountains, to all along the picturesque coast………..Cycling enthusiasts, will be happy to hear there is also plenty of terrain for them to explore, too. A 150 peaks above 1000m makes it an ideal location for all types of adventure sports.
3) Gastronomy
Like the rest of Spain, Murcia is a food lovers paradise. Serving all the typical spanish dishes, as well as some locally inspired cuisine. Excellent choices for both land and sea fare, however, they are especially known for their produce
4) Vino
You have to wash down that delicious food with something, it might as well be some locally produced wines. There are three distinct wine regions, each producing several varietals worth savoring. So fill your glass and spend sometime with some good friends.
5) City life
If you are looking for something a lit bit more upbeat, head to the cities of Murcia and Cartagena, which make up the only two metropolitan areas in the province. Murcia is found inland and has a population of around half a million….while Cartagena is found along the coast with nearly a quarter million inhabitants. Both are great places to visit museums, cafes, markets, shops and just admire the architexture.
6) nature
The autonomous community of Murcia is blessed with some excellent and diverse natural settings. If you like green, head to the dense forests of Sierra Espuña, or if you want to see some crazy wind erosion go to Bolnuevo, pink salt flats and flamingos can be seen at Salinas de San Pedro, and one of my favorites is the Ricote Valley which has the look of an oasis, tucked between the desert and the mountains.
7) History & Culture
All throughout the region you will find remnants of past civilizations. Dating back more than 3000 years. This can be observed by visiting the many cathedrals and archeological sites. For a more cultural experience I recommend visiting some small towns. Ojós, Blanca, and Caravaca de la Cruz just to name a few.
8) Nautical sports (Kayaking, fishing, boating)
With all that coastline, there is plenty of adventure to be had here too. Kayaking, Swimming, fishing, scuba diving and sailing can be enjoyed all year round. So don’t forget your swimsuit.
9) Thermal Spas
One of the most leisurely activities to do in the region, is visit a thermal spa. I had the pleasure of experiencing the historic Balneario de Archena wellness facility. The minerals in the water have a therapeutic effect, making it A great place to relax and unwind, after a few days of exploring.
10) Golf
If you like to swing the clubs, the region of Murcia is one of the best locations in all of Europe. Great weather and A total of 22 golf courses are here waiting for you.

Caravaca de la Cruz is a town and municipality of southeastern Spain in the province of Murcia, near the left bank of the River Argos, a tributary of the Segura. This city is the capital of the northwest Region of Murcia.
It is the Fifth Holy City of Catholic Christianity, having been granted the privilege to celebrate the jubilee year in perpetuity in 1998 by the then Pope John Paul II), along with Rome, Jerusalem, Santiago de Compostela and Camaleño (Monastery of Santo Toribio de Liébana). It celebrates its jubilee every seven years; the first being in 2003, when it was visited by the then Cardinal Ratzinger, later Pope Benedict XVI. In 2010 the second jubilee was celebrated, and it surpassed the one million mark of visits received in 2003. Festivities of International Tourist Interest since 2004.
Caravaca is dominated by the medieval Castle of Santa Cruz, and contains several convents and a fine parish church, with a miraculous cross celebrated for its healing power, in honor of which a yearly festival is held on 3 May. Caravaca is home to many monuments and museums, many of which are important tourist attractions. The hills which extend to the north are rich in marble and iron. The town is a considerable industrial centre, with large iron-works, tanneries and paper, chocolate and oil factories.
Besides being known by the Christian relic, it also has a festival in honor of it, held between 1 and 5 May of each year, declared of International Tourist Interest in 2004. Along with processions and parades of Moors and Christians, the celebration of Horses of Wine is especially relevant, which now aspires to be the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. The Neoclassical painter Rafael Tejeo was born in Caravaca. A gigantic archeological site was found in January 2009. It is composed of 1300 graves from 2400 to 1950 BC.

Who are we?
Well, we are a couple from worlds apart that has chosen Valencia, Spain to be our home base. Vicky is born and raised in Seoul, South Korea, now an American citizen. Josh is an American, well, born and raised in small town, Ohio.
We left our jobs, family and friends and moved to Valencia, Spain in the middle of the pandemic. We decided to that we should also start a YouTube channel to show the world that, you can do anything (even if you are getting grey hair), if you think you can! From Murcia to Caravaca and back - Spain 4K Travel Channel
In the afternoon, we make an excursion to Caravaca de la Cruz. The town in the region of Murcia is considered the oldest Palaeolithic site in Europe. Furthermore, it is one of the largest prehistoric burial sites in Europe, with 1300 skeletons found here.
Caravaca gained strategic importance in the Middle Ages as a junction between the Kingdom of Granada, the Kingdom of Murcia, and the Crown of Aragon. Later, it became a Christian border town against Al-Andalus.
Caravaca became famous for a relic that is said to come from the Cross of Christ. In 1998, Pope John Paul II declared Caravaca de la Cruz, one of the ten holy cities. One has the privilege to celebrate this every seven years. The annual patron saint's celebrations from 1 to 5 May were declared of International Tourist Interest in 2004. The celebration Caballos del Vino aspires to be declared Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by Unesco.
The distance of 80 km from Murcia to Caravaca flew by. The Southern Spanish landscape is barren and dry, but still very varied. Great parts are irrigated by clever water management. Again and again, we see fruit and vegetable cultivation. The landscape is interrupted by villages lying high on hills.
The medieval old town of Caravaca de la Cruz has very narrow lanes as we also experienced on the return journey. A mighty castle thrones on top of a little mountain in the center. Later, one built the Basilica de la Vera Cruz in the center of this castle.

On the way back we could have a look at a reservoir. It is part of the irrigation system and lies hidden between the hills.

Für den Nachmittag haben wir einen Ausflug nach Caravaca de la Cruz geplant. Die Stadt in der Region Murcia gilt als die älteste Fundstätte in der Altsteinzeit in Europa. Außerdem gibt es hier eine der größten prähistorischen Begräbnisstätten Europas. 1300 Skelette wurden hier gefunden.
Strategische Bedeutung erhielt Caravaca im Mittelalter als Knotenpunkt zwischen dem Königreich von Granada, dem Königreich Murcia, sowie der Krone von Aragon. Später wurde sie christliche Grenzstadt gegen Al-Andalus.
Berühmt wurde Caravaca durch eine Reliquie, die angeblich vom Kreuz Christi stammt. 1998 wurde Caravaca de la Cruz von Papst Johannes Paul II zu einer der zehn heiligen Städte erklärt und hat das Privileg dies alle sieben Jahre zu feiern. Die Patronatsfeierlichkeiten von 1. bis 5. Mai jeden Jahres sind international von touristischen Interesse. Die Feier Caballos del Vino soll von der UNESCO zum immateriellen Kulturerbe der Menschheit erklärt werden.
Die Strecke von 80 km von Murcia bis Caravaca verging wie im Flug. Die südspanische Landschaft ist zwar karg und trocken, aber dennoch sehr abwechslungsreich. Durch geschicktes Wasser-Management wird viel künstlich bewässert. Hervorragender Obst- und Gemüseanbau ist immer wieder zu beobachten. Unterbrochen wird die Landschaft durch hoch auf Hügel liegende Dörfer.
Caravaca besitzt eine mittelalterliche Altstadt mit sehr engen Gassen, wie wir selbst bei der Rückfahrt feststellen mussten. Im Zentrum befindet sich ein kleiner Berg, auf dem ein mächtige Burg errichtet wurde. Im Zentrum dieser Burg wurde später die Basilica de la Vera Cruz errichtet,

Auf dem Rückweg konnten wir noch einen Blick auf einen Stausee werfen, der Teil des Bewässerungssystems ist und versteckt zwischen den Hügeln liegt.

Drive to hotel in Bullas-rain-hail-thunder & lightning-Visit to Salto del Usero near Bullas, normally a tranquil spot for bathing in a cavern/canyon at a beauty spot, but it was flooding with muddy water. Viewing Caravaca the next day & visiting a fantastic place called Fuentes del Marques, then a drive back through quite varied scenery. It is a personal record for my wife & me, a bonus if anyone else enjoys it.

It was high time for a deep dive into the remaining place that my parents, after visiting me in Spain for fourteen years, had yet to visit: MURCIA.
We designed a massive roadtrip from the mountainous and hidden northwest corner, diagonally southeast through forgotten pueblos towards the more famed and built-up coastline. And, course, eating as we went.
It is a truly engaging region, one often way down on the list of 'where to visit' in Spain. but in that unknown lies the beauty.

En este video dejamos la costa de Murcia para adentrarnos en la sierra buscando Cazorla. Nos quedamos por el camino visitando Caravaca de la Cruz, Calasparra y el Santuario de Nuestra Señora de la Esperanza.

Upon arrival in Caravaca, we are lucky to find a parking lot next to the Plaza del Arco. The sun is shining, and a tapas bar has some chairs outside. So we treat ourselves to a tasty ham and let the place have its effect on us. In front of a gift shop next to the blossoming Jacaranda trees, we discover an exceptional horse costume. The horses wear such costumes at the festival Caballos del Vino. They are very precious, sometimes one works on it for a whole year.
Today there exists a legend about the origin of the festival. It says that the inhabitants and the Knights Templar found refuge in the castle from the siege by the Muslims. Over time, the water became undrinkable, and some got ill. Riders crept out of the castle at night. But instead of water they only brought back some wineskins. One blessed the wine under the Caravaca cross and gave it to the sick, who immediately felt better. The wine was then mixed with the spoiled water, which became fresh again. So one could resist the enemy.
Strengthened we set off for the cathedral. A relatively steep road leads up the hill.
Halfway there is an impressive monument in honor of the festival Caballos del Vino. From here, one has a first view over the roofs of Caravaca de la Cruz. Especially impressive is the mighty fortification wall of the former castle, in front of us.
We walk to the top of the hill. A large square behind the fortification walls surrounds the cathedral. Probably to save space, one built the bishop's apartment on top of the cathedral, which gives it a strange appearance. Well, in any case, one seems to have a beautiful view from there.
An old clockwork is exhibited in a little tower at the wall. We have a quick look into the cathedral and the inner courtyard.
For a while, we assimilate the view across the roofs of the old town, but of course also to the other parts of the city and the surroundings. Then we go back to the car and return to Murcia.

Bei unserer Ankunft in Caravaca finden wir entgegen unserer Erwartung einen Parkplatz in der Nähe des Plaza del Arco. Das Wetter ist schön und eine Tapas-Bar hat Stühle draußen stehen. So gönnen wir uns zunächst einmal einen leckeren Schinken und lassen den Platz auf uns wirken.
Neben den wunderschön blühenden Jacaranda Bäumen, entdecken wir vor einem Geschenkeladen ein herrliches Pferdekostüm. Solche Kostüme werden den Pferden beim Fest Caballos del Vino angelegt. Sie sind sehr kostbar, da teilweise ein ganzes Jahr an ihnen gearbeitet wird.
Zum Ursprung des Festes gibt es heute nur noch eine Legende. Sie besagt, dass die Bewohner und die Tempelritter in der Burg Zuflucht vor der Belagerung durch die Muslime fanden. Mit der Zeit wurde das Wasser ungenießbar und einige wurden krank. Reiter schlichen sich nachts aus der Burg. Aber statt Wasser brachten sie nur einige Weinschläuche mit zurück. Man segnete den Wein unter dem Caravaca-Kreuz und gab ihn den Kranken, denen es sofort besser ging. Daraufhin mischte man den Wein mit dem verdorbenen Wasser, welches wieder frisch wurde. So konnte man dem Feind widerstehen.
Gestärkt machen wir uns auf den Weg zur Kathedrale. Eine relativ steile Straße führt den Hügel hinauf.
Auf halber Strecke steht ein beeindruckendes Denkmal zu Ehren des Festes Caballos del Vino. Von hier aus hat man eine ersten Ausblick über die Dächer von Caravaca. Besonders beeindruckend liegt die mächtige Befestigungsmauer der ehemaligen Burg vor dem Betrachter.
Wir gehen weiter auf die Spitze des Hügels. Hinter den Befestigungsmauern umgibt ein großer Platz die Kathedrale. Vermutlich um Platz zu sparen hat man die Wohnung des Bischofs direkt auf die Kathedrale gebaut, was ihr ein sonderbares Aussehen verleiht. Naja, jedenfalls scheint man von dort aus einen herrlichen Fernblick zu haben.
Ein altes Uhrwerk ist in einem kleinen Turm an der Mauer ausgestellt. Wir werfen einen kurzen Blick in die Kathedrale und den Innenhof.
Wir verinnerlichen eine Weile den Blick auf die Dächer der Altstadt, aber natürlich auch über die anderen Teile der Stadt und die Umgebung, bevor wir wieder zurück zum Auto gehen und nach Murcia zurückkehren.

The 3 Amigos, Antonio, Jackie and myself explored the amazing town of Caravaca de la Cruz. to a house called La Carrasca. North West of Murcia, a major pilgrimage site, it’s home to the Basilica Shrine of Vera Cruz, with its distinctive Caravaca Cross and Baroque facade.
We visited the town in late November 2019 but didn’t manage to cover other parts of the town. So I paid a re-visit by myself to capture the Bullring and other parts of the town. The 3 Amigos will return later in the year.

In 1998 Caravaca de la Cruz was visited by Pope John Paul II during which it became the fifth Holy City of Catholic Christianity.

Peregrinando por Caravaca de la Cruz y noroeste de Murcia...
Hola disfrutones!
Este fin de semana os llevamos a una región bastante desconocida por el gran público: MURCIA. Sí, vale, ¿quién no ha ido a La Manga, o a Cabo de Palos? Correcto. Pero nosotros seguimos nuestra idea de enseñaros esa España menos conocida así que visitamos el interior, concretamente la zona noroeste de Murcia.
En este video os enseñamos CARAVACA DE LA CRUZ, MORATALLA y BULLAS.
CARAVACA DE LA CRUZ es, ahí donde lo tenéis, un pueblo con mucha historia y muy importante a nivel religioso. En 1998 el Papa Juan Pablo II la nombró Ciudad Jubilar a nivel perpetuo. Solo importantes ciudades católicas como Roma, Santiago o Jerusalem tienen este apelativo, así que ojo!
¿Por qué es tan importante Caravaca para el mundo católico? No os perdáis el video...
Es imprescindible dejar el coche fuera del casco histórico y que os deis un paseo por la Plaza Nueva y subáis al castillo dando un bonito paseo y disfrutando de su villa medieval.
Una vez en el castillo, dedicad un tiempo a rodear por arriba sus impresionantes murallas y disfrutar de las vistas. Y dentro... el santuario es precioso. La capilla donde está la Cruz es sencillamente espectacular, pequeña pero con mucho encanto y un magnetismo... que tiene algo especial, las cosas como son.
No os perdáis en el video la historia de esta cruz, la leyenda es muy bonita, mezclando la historia con la devoción religiosa.
Al salir nos acercamos a ver MORATALLA, otro pueblo muy recomendable. Subimos directamente al castillo. Tiene muy buenas vistas y se puede visitar por dentro, merece la pena ver una torre del homenaje tan bien conservada.
Terminamos la jornada en BULLAS, con una cena-maridaje en el restaurante Borrego. Vais a alucinar en el video la cenota que nos metimos, disfrutando de por lo menos 5 vinos diferentes de la D.O. Bullas.
Definitivamente nos hemos enamorado de la uva monastrell. Qué rica, qué retrogusto tiene, qué color tan bonito!
En el siguiente video os hablaremos más de Bullas y de otros pueblos de la zona. Solo un nombre: CEHEGÍN. Mucho amor a esa preciosidad de pueblo y de gentes!
