One of the lesser-known coastal resorts on the island, Candelaria is located in the north east of Tenerife, just a short drive away from Santa Cruz.
This area is not so much a tourist resort as a small Canarian village with deep-rooted religious connections that people visit on day trips by the coach-load.
Most importantly, the village is home to the Virgin of Candelaria and the Basilica, two religious features that people travel from all over to see and experience.
Along the edge of the beach is one of the most unusual things to be found in Candelaria – a line of statues depicting the nine aboriginal Guanche kings that guard the Virgin of Candelaria. The Canary Islands, also known informally as the Canaries, is a Spanish archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean, in a region known as Macaronesia. At their closest point to the African mainland, they are 100 kilometres (62 miles) west of Morocco. They are the southernmost of the autonomous communities of Spain, and are located in the African Tectonic Plate. The archipelago is economically and politically European, and is part of the European Union.
The eight main islands are (from largest to smallest in area) Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, La Palma, La Gomera, El Hierro and La Graciosa. The archipelago includes many smaller islands and islets, including Alegranza, Isla de Lobos, Montaña Clara, Roque del Oeste, and Roque del Este. It also includes a number of rocks, including those of Salmor, Fasnia, Bonanza, Garachico, and Anaga. In ancient times, the island chain was often referred to as the Fortunate Isles. The Canary Islands are the southernmost region of Spain, and the largest and most populous archipelago of Macaronesia. Because of their location, the Canary Islands have historically been considered a bridge between the four continents of Africa, North America, South America, and Europe.
In 2019, the Canary Islands had a population of 2,153,389 with a density of 287.39 inhabitants per km2, making it the eighth most populous autonomous community. The population is mostly concentrated in the two capital islands: around 43% on the island of Tenerife and 40% on the island of Gran Canaria.
The Canary Islands, especially Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, and Lanzarote, are a major tourist destination, with over 12 million visitors per year. This is due to their beaches, subtropical climate, and important natural attractions, especially Maspalomas in Gran Canaria, Teide National Park, and Mount Teide (a World Heritage Site) in Tenerife. Mount Teide is the third tallest volcano in the world, measured from its base on the ocean floor. Because of the islands’ subtropical climate, it has long, hot summers, and moderately warm winters. The amount of precipitation and the level of maritime moderation vary depending on location and elevation. The archipelago includes green areas as well as desert areas. The islands’ high mountains are ideal for astronomical observation, because they lie above the temperature inversion layer. As a result, the archipelago boasts two professional observatories: Teide Observatory on the island of Tenerife, and Roque de los Muchachos Observatory on the island of La Palma.
During the era of the Spanish Empire, the Canaries were the main stopover for Spanish galleons on their way to the Americas, which sailed that far south in order to catch the prevailing northeasterly trade winds.

Hello and welcome back to your travel channel. ????
Today we invite you to a beautiful city walk in Candelaria in Tenerife in the Canary Islands in Spain.
Candelaria is the religious capital of Tenerife, the Basilica of Candelaria is located here, where the sculpture of the Black-faced Virgin of Candelaria, sacred to all the islanders, is kept. Today, her image is a symbol of the Canary Islands.
On the square of the Holy Patroness of the Canary Islands (Spanish: Plaza de la Patrona de Canarias), near the basilica, you can see majestic bronze sculptures. These are the nine kings of the Guanches who ruled over nine regions of the island of Tenerife until the conquest by the Spaniards in the 15th century.
Every year on February 2 and August 15, pilgrims from all over the island come to Candelaria to pray to their shrine. An interesting legend tells how the place became the holy of holies.
Approximately in the interval from 1392 to 1401, on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean, a wooden sculpture of the Madonna and Child was discovered by two natives. From a long stay in the water, she darkened. Most likely, this sculpture was from a sunken ship. Usually such figurines carved from wood in images were installed above the breakwater of the ship, on a latrine, calling them a latrine figure.
The Guanches found her and tried to touch her with a stick, but one of them was wounded. Returning to the village and telling about what happened. They came to that place with help and tried to touch her again, when the wounded native touched the Virgin, his wound was healed. Considering that this woman with a child was supernatural, she was transferred and installed in the cave of Achbiniko (Achbinico), which became a shrine for them.
When the Spaniards conquered the island of Tenerife, they found the Black-faced Madonna and decided to deliver it to the capital, but nothing came of this venture, the farther they moved away from the cave, the heavier the shrine became. They left her on the shore and then returned to the cave. On November 7, 1826, during a rain and a storm, the figurine from the cave disappeared without a trace, perhaps even washed into the ocean.
In 1827, the monks commissioned a copy of the Black-faced Virgin of Candelaria from the Spanish sculptor Fernando Estevez de Salas, and to this day they worship her in the Basilica.

Etymology of the name
In pre-Hispanic epochs this zone pertained to Güímar's aboriginal Menceyato. It was accepted that the aboriginal name of the zone was simply Güímar as the whole menceyato. After the conquest, this zone was called Candelaria, in honor to the virgin patron of the archipelago, the Virgin of Candelaria.

The municipality has a beach located to the east and is famous for tourism. Candelaria's municipality receives the annual peregrination of Candelaria (on February 2 and on August 15, the latter is the most important), as well as to the pilgrims who visit the municipality in all other epochs of the year. The principal stops of any visit are the Basilica of Candelaria and Cueva de Achbinico, but there are other places of interest in the village:
Basilica of Candelaria
The current basilica dates back of 1959, it was constructed on a former hermitage. When you leave the basilica you stand out on the belfry coast, to your feet one finds the Plaza de la Patrona de Canarias. Since the image of the Virgin was appearing on the beach of Chimisay, around 1392, the first great Sanctuary to the Virgin of Candelaria was constructed in 1668. Later with the increase of the peregrinations of the devout ones, there was created the need to construct a bigger temple (the current basilica), which has capacity for 5,000 persons.
The basilica is in the south part of the city, adjacent to the Atlantic Ocean. Close to the Plaza de la Patrona de Canarias they find the bronze statues of 9 aboriginal kings. Next to the basilica is the Dominican convent religious order in charge of the sanctuary. The basilic also has a large collection of wall paintings. The temple and Royal Basilica Marian Shrine of Our Lady of Candelaria, is considered the main temple dedicated to the Virgin Mary in the Canary Islands.
Cueva de Achbinico
Also so called Cave of San Blas, it was the first Christian temple of Canary Islands, in this place the original inhabitants of the Canary Islands produced worship to the Virgin of Candelaria. According to recent archaeological layers of ash found and submitted for consideration are carbon-14 dating back over three thousand years. In this cave a fire was kept on permanently, something like the temple of the Vestal Virgins of ancient Rome.
Plaza de la Patrona de Canarias
The Plaza de la Patrona de Canarias (Square of the Saint Patron of the Canary Islands) his a large square in Candelaria. It is next to the Basilica of Candelaria, a meeting place of pilgrims and festivities celebrating the most important of the municipality. In this square there are also various bars and cafes. On one side of the square are statues of the nine kings who ruled the nine aboriginal guanches menceyatos (pre-Hispanic kingdoms) of Tenerife.
Calle Obispo Pérez Cáceres
It is the shopping street of the town par excellence where you can find different souvenir stores, religious imagery and crafts. The street runs parallel to the coast and the promenade of the city to the Plaza de la Patrona de Canarias and the Basilica of Candelaria.
